ColorThere are many ways

to describe color.

Page 2: C o l o r

Color can be described by the group or category to which it

belongs.

•Primary •Secondary

•Intermediate •neutral

Page 3: C o l o r

Color can be described by its

Properties.

Page 4: C o l o r

The

properties of color are:

Color properties

Hue Intensity Value Temperature

Page 6: C o l o r

Color can be described

by its hue•This HUE is red.

Page 7: C o l o r

Hue:•The actual color, or the identity of a color, such as red.

definition

Page 8: C o l o r

Color can be described by its Intensity

This red is brighter, louder, more intense than

this red which is duller, muted, less intense.

Page 9: C o l o r

Intensity:• is the brightness or dullness

(grayness) of a color

• is a color’s strength, saturation, purity. The "noise" it makes.

• A Pure Hue has the highest saturation and intensity of a color.

definition

Page 10: C o l o r

Color can be described

by its Value:•This is a lighter value of red

•This is a darker value of red

Page 11: C o l o r

Value:• The lightness or darkness of

a color • Different values of a color

range from very light to very dark (tints and shades).

definition

Page 12: C o l o r

Value - Tints Adding white will lighten a

hue or raise its value. This is called a tint.

Red hue + white = Tint (pink)

definition

Page 13: C o l o r

•Adding black will darken a hue or lower its value. This is called a shade.

Value - Shades

Red hue + black = shade (maroon)

Color can be described

• Colors give different feelings of warmth and coolness.

• The color wheel can be divided into two sides -

the warm colors and the cool colors.

by its Temperature:

Page 15: C o l o r

Temperature: •Warm colors

look and feel warm.–Yellows, oranges, reds

• Cool colors look and feel cool.

–Blues, greens, violets

definition

Page 16: C o l o r

Temperature: The warm colors

remind us of fire, and sunshine.

As a group, they convey energy and action, and are perceived as being closer to the viewer.

Page 17: C o l o r

Temperature: The cool colors remind us of cool water

and green grassAs a group, they convey peace and

tranquility, and are perceived as being farther from the viewer.

Color Harmonycan be defined as

a pleasing combination of colors.

Combined Colors can be

described as Harmonious

definition

Page 19: C o l o r

Color Harmony based on

•Monochromatic Color Scheme

•Analogous Color Scheme

•Complementary Color Scheme

Page 20: C o l o r

Harmony

•Monochromatic Color SchemeMono = one, single . . .as in monorailChroma = colorthus monochromatic = One color.

• This scheme may be achieved using tints and shades of one hue.

definition

Page 21: C o l o r

Analogous Color schemes

• Colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. Colors with a family resemblance.

definitionHarmony

Page 22: C o l o r

Complementary Color schemes

• Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel;ex. red and green, violet and yellow, yellow-green and red-violet etc.

definitionHarmony

Page 23: C o l o r

Complementary Color schemes

When mixed together in near equal amounts, complements make a neutral color.

Harmony

Page 24: C o l o r

Complementary Color schemes

If a little of a hue’s complement is mixed in with it, the result will be a dulling or neutralizing of that hues intensity.

Split Complement Color schemes

Three colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel,

but to either side of the

exact opposite (complement);

green

Example:red, blue-green, & yellow-green

Triadic Color schemes

• Colors that are equally spaced. • The most famous of these is

the primary triad . . . red, yellow, and blue.

• Triadic harmonies are most effective if only one color is

allowed to dominate.

AssignmentCreate and paint a color strip for

each of the following color schemes and label each.

1. Monochromatic color scheme (5)

2. Analogous color scheme (3)

3. Complementary color scheme (5)

4. Split Complement color scheme (3)

Rubric• Correct colors for the

scheme, and all schemes are labeled.

• Correct color mixing.
