"Behold, I am coming soon. I bring with me the recompense I will give to each according to his deeds" (Rev 22: 12)
For the past few weeks, the Liturgy of the Word has included passages from The Acts of the Apostles, a book that begins with Jesus instructing the Apostles for the forty days following His Resurrection before commissioning them to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. Jesus’ last words to His disciples were: “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth" (Acts 1:8). The remainder of the Book of Acts records the ways and means that the first Christians carried out this commission, witness-ing to their faith in Jesus Christ despite on-going, often violent, persecution against them. An example of the Apostles’ sacrifice to fulfill this commission is found in today’s First Reading: the martyr-dom of Saint Stephen, one of the seven deacons appointed to assist the first Apostles by ensuring that the Greek-speaking widows in the community were treated fairly. When brought before the Sanhedrin for his teachings among the Jews, Saint Stephen did not apologize. Rather, he offered his detractors a dissertation on the Jewish scriptures to prove that the laws of Moses were not undermined by Jesus but, instead, were fulfilled in Jesus. Stephen was stoned to death when he denounced his listeners as "stiff-necked" people who, just as their ancestors had done, resisted the Holy Spirit. "Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him." With these words, Stephen was accusing the Jewish leaders of murdering the Messiah for which all the People of God had been waiting. Stephen’s speech aroused such great anger in the Jews that they stoned him to death. The English word “martyr” is a translation of the Greek word for witness. Stephen’s martyr-dom became the first ultimate Christian witness. As Stephen was being stoned, he looked up and cried, "Look! I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God!" His listeners would know that the right hand of the king was a position of power and authority. Stephen saw Jesus, no longer as the Suffering Servant but rather, as Saint John describes in the Book of Revelation, “like the Son of Man,” but different. According to John’s description, Jesus now appears white as snow, His face shining like the sun, just as He had been when John was allowed to witness the Transfiguration of Jesus on earth. In their visions, both Stephen and John, recognized Jesus, but He was different; He was resurrected. His mission had been accomplished, and He now radiated the power (right hand) of God. As John describes Him: “His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns…And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords” (Rev 19:12,16). By sharing what they had seen, John and Stephen give witness to what Jesus had said and done, and by the power of His Holy spirit, continues to do, in and for His People. By their witness to Jesus, John and Stephen called others to recognize that not only did Jesus fulfill all of the Old
Testament prophecies and so prove, once and for all, that He is the Promised One, the Messiah, the Anointed One, the Christ, but they also declared that Jesus is Lord forever and ever. We too are called to give witness to the Kingship of Jesus in heaven and on earth. The Great Commission that Jesus gave to His first Apostles has been given to all of us, His disciples. But, as the Book of Acts records, being disci-ples of Jesus is not an easy duty or responsibility. Through-out history, Christians have been persecuted for their witness to the Truth of Jesus Christ. Jesus knew the commission he has given to those of us who would follow Him would not be an easy task, and so, at His Last Supper He prayed “for those who will believe in me through their word…that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me. Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world." In Jesus’ words, we are a “gift” to Him. He desires us to remain in Him, that we may be one as He and our Heavenly Father are one. If we remain in Him, even if it costs us our lives, our words and deeds will bear great fruit. That is, our words and deeds will result in helping others to see the Truth that: “eternal life is this: they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent”(Jn 17:3). Our commission as baptized Christians is to help others know that Jesus Christ is the only true God. Stephen’s martyrdom demonstrates how we are to accomplish our task. As he lay dying, Stephen’s last words, were the words of Jesus: “Lord, do not hold this sin against them,” just as Jesus had prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” (Lk 23:34) At the point of death, Stephen cried out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit,” just as Jesus, at the moment of His death, had “called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit" (Lk 23:46). With these words, Saint Stephen shows us how to fulfill our own commission, i.e., with the words of Jesus in our hearts and on our lips so that, by our love, all people will know that we are His disciples. No matter how difficult life may be, we are called to continue to preach and teach to all we meet everything the Lord has commanded us, to let the world know that: “For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scrip-tures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the liv-ing and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.” This was the reason Jesus, God, became Man: to offer Himself as the perfect sacrifice to our perfect God, for all people, for all sins, for all time and-even more-to show us the way to eter-nal life. "Consequently, he is able to save to the ut-termost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them" (Heb 7: 25). (continued on pg.4)

No matter how difficult life may be, we are called to continue to preach and teach to all we meet everything the Lord has commanded us, to let the world know that: “For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in ful-fillment of the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.” This was the reason Jesus, God, became Man: to offer Himself as the perfect sacrifice to our perfect God, for all people, for all sins, for all time and-even more-to show us the way to eternal life. "Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them" (Heb 7: 25). Jesus came to send us the Holy Spirit so that we can now complete our own
mission to make disciples of all people. “Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall sepa-rate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: ‘For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8: 34-37). Yes, our mission to fulfill our Great Commission is not an easy one. But, the reward for comple-tion of our mission is eternal life. May we fulfill our mis-sion in such a way that one day we might witness what John and Stephen did. One day, may we, too, “see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory” (Mark 13: 26).
