The superior low priced motor home from Carthago - a very warm welcome to the new c-tourer.

Independent, competent, practical:The promobil readers‘ test promobil, Europe‘s most important motor home specialist magazine, is the pioneer of an interesting kind of test, the readers‘ test. Experienced readersapply to be testers and test a product both indepen-dently and competently: they are always experienced practitioners. In July 2011, ten selected testers arrived at Carthago, accompanied by a promobil editor, to carry out the first practical test on the new c-tourer models.

What does a good motor home have to have to make it a very good one? At Carthago, we ask our customers this question and the answers vary. Some see the timber-free wall con-struction together with cabin rigidity as the most important criteria for a very good motor home, some the quality of the furniture; some prefer the outstanding winter hardiness, and very often it is the large, comfortable beds or it is the cosy, inviting seating arrange-ments that make the difference between good and very good.

The following customer response was fascinating: a good motor home is only very good when you can afford it. Performance actually starts when it is affordable. An interesting assertion that Carthago often encounters with the new c-tourer is that it is the first real superior low-priced motor home. The c-tourer redefines the 60,000 Euro class as it has inherited the genes of the Liner Premium class, but costs a lot less - and mostly, it is also cheaper than our competitors‘ models that have a distinctly lower level of technology. Anyone who wants to have an upper range model at a middle range price will be in luck with the c-tourer.

The Carthago philosophy that "not all that glitters is gold" applies for the c-tourer as well. We have our roots in motor home construction unlike most of our competitors whose roots are in caravan construction. What does this mean for you? Carthago has always trod-den the premium path and incorporated upper range qualities in less expensive motor ho-mes. This distinguishes us from most of the others that have imported cheap components and cheap technology from caravan construction.

Our standards are different, much higher. You can see this if you look at the bodywork design or the furnishings in the new c-tourer and compare them with our competitors‘ ve-hicles at the same price. Carthago motor homes are, therefore, also exceptional in terms of their outstanding value for money. It is worth making the comparison and not just looking at the basic price. Carthago prices will always reflect something that makes the difference between a good motor home and a very good one. Every Carthago is practical and thus fully equipped, while with other providers, it is not unusual to have to pay hefty additional prices for what is obvious standard equipment.

Make your dream of trouble-free travelling come true. With the c-tourer you can now af-ford that dream. Don‘t make do with compromises, treat yourself to a motor home that meets the highest of standards; a Carthago. Motor homes from Carthago are a unique combination of cosy living, top quality functionality and upper range technology. In a Car-thago, you will always feel at home - guaranteed!

Applying these values, Carthago has progressed from what was a craft enterprise over 30 years ago into the second largest manufacturer of camping buses. This era marked the first half of the company‘s history. Soon afterwards, Carthago imported its brand promise to the upper and premium ranges.

Standing still is a step backwards - Carthago has developed consistently and with a clear focus. Firstly as a highly regarded newcomer and then as a leading motor home manufac-turer for discerning customers. Today, names such as Carthago Liner, Chic high-line, Chic s-plus, Chic e-line and Chic c-line are representative of this philosophy – which, by the way, was awarded the title of motor home of the year 2011 by more than 24,000 promobil rea-ders - and now there is the c-tourer.

We, at Carthago, are just as unsatisfied with average as you are, our customers. That is why Carthago uses materials for all of its components that are exclusively of selected qua-lity. The high degree of in-house production is the basis of what has become known as Carthago quality. The production of highly stable sandwich walls, the manufacture of so-lid furnishings to traditional cabinet-maker standards, the stable and functional hatches, we have made a conscious decision to do all these things and much more in-house. Using the experience gained from this, Carthago firstly applied this top range technology in the upper range, and then in the upper middle range and now in the lower middle range.

This development is unique in the entire motor home sector. No wonder that Carthago is seen Europe-wide as a benchmark for quality and innovation in its market segments. And here is the latest evidence of this; with the c-tourer, Carthago has succeeded in developing a premium motor home at the price of a vehicle in the lower middle range that is up to 12,000 Euro cheaper than a comparable competitor model. With the c-tourer, Carthago has redefined an apparently unchangeable motor home class and has straight away made itself the reference point that the others have to look to. Compare the quality and equip-ment for yourself!

It all began in Ravensburg in 1979. Today, Carthago manufactures in three extremely mo-dern plants in three locations. Each production location has been designed for a specific range. This specialisation ensures top quality and the perfect balance between price and performance that you, as a customer, are entitled to expect. Added to this, this speciali-sation makes it possible to combine a high degree of craftsmanship with technically high quality series production.

The product of this craftsmanship and high-tech production can be seen in the quality that is typical of Carthago; for example, the bodywork of all vehicles is exemplary. The ex-traordinarily stable, durable and perfectly insulated main cabin, with a rigidity and perfect design you can hear, or indeed, you cannot hear when negotiating bad roads. Who else has so much trust in their main cabins that they give a 10-year leak proof guarantee?

An enormous degree of brand loyalty underlines how satisfied Carthago drivers are. Thisis proved by the fact that innovations at Carthago are not ends in themselves, rather they are at all times in the interests of our customers. The customer is at the centre of eve-rything we do - this is also what lies behind Carthago‘s promise to be the benchmark with all models and in all classes, as well as being the leader in terms of quality, design and innovation!

Carthago motor home construction - this is a success story stretching over more than three decades. At the root of this success are basic values that have been consistently applied over this period. And so, every Carthago motor home stands and has always stood for high quality, exemplary living, sleeping and driving comfort, sophisticated and reliabletechnology and last but not least, a unique design that sets the brand apart.

Typical Carthago bodywork constructionis also found in every c-tourer. Bodyworkfrom the Liner class has been directly applied to the new star of the lowermiddle range. The c-tourer offers a high level of longevity, stability and safety and sets itself apart from all its competitors. Carthago‘s years of experience in the upper range is the basis of this quality.

The bodywork on a Carthago motor home should be seen as a composite network. The solid double floor acts as a foundation and stabilises the vehicle. Thanks to thehighly stable ring beam profile, the side walls are bonded surface to surface, completely without the use of bolts. This provides a very high degree of stability, longevity, and an absolutely leak-free vehicle.

The timber-free main cabin, with its aluminium boarding also on the inside wall on top of the RTM hard foam panel, is effectively a stable, self-supporting, rigid ‘box’. With this bodywork, Carthago achieve top marks in terms of passive safety, for example in the case of an accident.

The bodywork bonding techniquesusing ring beam profiles and surface bonding guarantees many years without leaks in the main cabin and thus provideslong-term value retention. A Carthagois and will remain a good investment!

We will give you an optional ten-year leak-free guarantee. All you have to do is have an annual leak inspection - which is also in the interests of you own safety - to obtain this guarantee.

P l u s p o i n t s :• Longevity• Faraday cage protection against lightning• No thermal bridge• Ten-year leak-free guarantee• Plus points when re-selling

Hailstone damage has increased signifi-cantly in the last ten years. A nightmare for many motor home drivers - not when you drive a Carthago. The roof surfaces of every c-tourer motor home are boarded with hailstone-resistant GRP. In the case of hailstones, this prevents any great damageresulting, and with some insurance companies, there is a premium reduction. The standard rail system at the top ofthe roof curve lets you attach accessorieswithout having to drill the roof surface. Apart from this, water draining along the rails means that those horrible smear marks resulting from water running down the sides can to a large extent be avoided.

P l u s p o i n t s :• GRP hail-resistant roof• Stable roof rail system

Why do Carthago motor homesset the benchmark? It is all about the typical qualities you can find in every Carthago motor home.

9Carthago quality

Very often, differences in quality can be found in the detail.

With every Carthago, it‘s worth a thorough examination

of the places that are hard to get to. A prime example of this

is the under floor: in every c-tourer it is,

as usual in the Carthago premium models,

made of fibre glass strengthened plastic coating.

Apart from an impressive stability, the GRP floor panel underside offers a high degree of security against damp, weather-ing and damage from stone chippings. Even the hardest of winters with the threat of so much salt on the road is not so frightening! This GRP ‘skin’ makes an important contribution to the longevity of your motor home. A bitumen coated wooden floor panel (!) as used by expensi-ve competitors cannot be compared. It is only the elaborate Carthago technolo-gy in the c-tourer that guarantees, even in the lower middle range, years of under body protection against salt, wet, grime and stone chippings.

P l u s p o i n t s :• GRP under body protection, rot proof• Long-term value retention• No damp

The air-conditioned double floor with heat storage technology in the Carthago c-tourer is one of the most decisive differences in relation to the competition. Even if many manufacturers talk of a ‘double floor’, this is not always withthe same design and functions that you can find in the Carthago version. A fundamental difference in relation to conventional GRP under floor pans used as double floors, is Carthago‘s solid floor panel with GRP top and bottom. This isbolted and bonded to the frame of the under body and acts as a particularly robust and stable base. The resultantrigidity in particular helps the driving stability, directional stability and corner-ing characteristics of your motor home, and what‘s more- you can drive better and safer. Carthago has transferred these construction methods that have been proven over many years in the upper range unchanged into the entire model range and thereby offers a decisiveadvantage.

P l u s p o i n t s :• High degree of driving safety• Maximum cabin rigidity• Quiet driving without annoying noises

It is on this very sturdy floor panel thatthe solid double floor is built using stable stayers which are firmly mortised and fixed with screws. This ‘basement’ is the basis upon which the entire living area furnishings and living area floor are supported. No different from what you are familiar with in conventional house construction. It goes without saying that such anall-round insulated basement acts asan authentic heat storage agent in the cold winter months. The living area floorabove is, therefore, always heated from below and pleasantly warm.

Lovely warm feet also means that the technological equipment is protected against frost - since it is housed very accessibly in the heated double floor, below the living area.

In the double floor of the c-tourer integ-rated models, there are practical storage areas - equally protected against the wet and frost - that you can load from inside via the bilge hatches.

P l u s p o i n t s :• Upper range double floor technology• High degree of rigidity• All round insulation without thermal bridge• Technology housed in frost-protected environment• Under floor heating heat storage

Good vision means good safety on theroad. The vision concept developed by Carthago in the driver cabin of the integrated model sets the standard herein two fundamental areas: Forward view and circumferential view.

Forward view :Thanks to a dashboard that falls away steeply and the low set windscreen, the carriageway is in full view just 2.77 metres away from the driver‘s seat. This gives a feeling of safety and received the top marks in the promobil specialist magazine comparison test against other integrated motor homes!

P l u s p o i n t s :• The best driver cabin vision concept• 3-dimensional convex panorama windscreen• Perfect forward view of the carriageway after 2.77 m thanks to the dashboard falling away sharply - promobil‘s top mark!

Circumferentail view :As well as the forward view, you havean outstanding view to the rear and sidewhen you are on the road. The rear viewvia the large suspended side bus mirror, with its standard integrated wide angle lens, is perfect. The clever placing of the mirror guarantees vision with no annoyingA-pillar in the way and good vision on roundabouts.

Laser measuring confirms that the c-tourer has optimum safety relevant features in terms of its field of vision

Mark of 1

Your safety on the road with your Carthago motor home is dear to us. And it is reassuring to know that we have done all we can to make this happen. We understand safety as being your safety during the journey as well as your safety at your holiday destination.

The key measures for your driving safety start with the choice of motor home base. With the c-tourer, we have used the trusted Fiat Ducato low-frame chassis. A feature of this chassis is its low height to accommodate the Carthago air-condi-tioned double floor comfortably as well as the broad gauge rear axle with a width of 1980 mm. The combination of a low centre of gravity and broad gauge provides driving fun and safety at the same time. Our incentive; even in the lower middle range, chassis have to be safe and comfortable. The new c-toureris also in this regard a benchmark in its class!

Should you - and we hope this is not thecase - however, be involved in an accident, the c-tourer bodywork provides you withan above average degree of crash safety. The high stability and the resolute buckling characteristics of the timber-free bodywork with its sturdy ring beam profiles act together as a kind of ‘crash box’ and thus make a fundamental contribution to the passive safety of passengers.

Even at the driver cabin design stage, the outstanding layout was a specificationpriority. You will immediately notice the ergonomic design of the cockpit and dashboard. You sit yourself down in the vehicle and immediately feel comfortable, whether you are in the driver‘s seat or the passenger seat.

The large side windows and the wholedriver cabin atmosphere contribute tothe overall feel-good factor in a Carthagomotor home. Drive better, drive more relaxed, see more of the world every time you travel - in a Carthago c-tourer this is all possible!

P l u s p o i n t s :• optimum circumferential view with large bus mirror and integrated wide angle lenses• optimum rear view mirror placement with no annoying A-pillar• large side windows in driver cabin• well arranged driver cabin and cockpit design• innovative LED day driving light

Anyone these days who designs a motor home just based on the way it looks does not recognise the times we live in. Carthago has for many years not justbeen satisfied with an innovative appearance: Saving fuel and costs with an aerodynamic vehicle front were the other two development targets when designing the front part of the Carthago integrated model.

The flat angle of the front mask and the rounded, aerodynamic front shape on the c-tourer, which at the top, close to the roof, merges nicely in with the elegant curved roof, together with the verythree dimensional convex panorama front windscreen, have a very positiveeffect on aerodynamics. This saves costs and fuel and also reduces wind noiseduring the journey thanks to its lowaerodynamic resistance. In addition, behind the classy front of the c-tourer l - and not visible from outside - the biggest folding bed in the class is hidden away and there is a horizontally operated front blind with a dual function from top to bottom (blackout) and from bottom to top (sight screen).

P l u s p o i n t s :• Outstanding aerodynamics• Aerodynamics save costs + fuel• A decisive factor for energy efficiency• Less aerodynamic resistance means less wind noise• Insulating front blind with dual function• Largest folding bed

Holidays mean relaxing. For this reason, too, a Carthago c-tourer offers the best conditions. Thus, we havethought about your security, perhaps security against uninvited guests.

Main cabin doors with security double-locking are standard with every Carthago, and equally with the c-tourer. As an alter-native, we offer BKS additional household security locks, which make unauthorised opening of doors virtually impossible.

For locking of hatches and doors, special lock cylinders for so-called internal track keys are used. They provide additional security using a key code with standards based on the automotive industry.

Carthago uses quality main cabin windows which, in comparison to fitted windows, offer, as well outstanding insulation, additional protection againstbreak-ins: the window pane is sunk into the outer frame; this makes it difficult tolever the window up.

P l u s p o i n t s :• Double-locking of driver cabin and main cabin (integrated)• Frame windows to protect against levering of windows• Frame windows with divided PU frames for optimum insulation

Carthago bodywork is not only good to look at, but also effective for everyday use. This can be seen from the fact that acces-sories are only those made of good quality plastic moulding. These parts are coloured to match the vehicle colour and are also totally insensitive to UV light. No more discolouring or going yellow!

In comparison to GRP accessories, plastic moulded parts are much lighter and this has a positive effect on the vehicle weight.

A speciality of Carthago is the segmenta-tion of the accessories. If there is damage caused by an accident or after a bump from parking, these are easy to removeand therefore inexpensive to replace. An so the integrated c-tourer models have, for example, a separate front bum-per and rear skirting or a multi-part rear frame. Relative to one-piece GRP front masks or GRP rear walls that you someti-mes find with our competitors‘ vehicles, there is, in the case of damage, a signifi-cant cost saving.

P l u s p o i n t s :• Bodywork accessories made of multi-part plastic moulds• Cost saving in case of damage due to segmentation• Weight reducing• No discolouring and yellowing from UV effects

In addition, we carry out, on a regular basis, elaborate cold chamber testsin order to achieve an optimum heating and insulation effect. And, it must be said,we will not be satisfied until we are the best. You have probably guessed; the perfectly functioning heating system begins right at the beginning of the development of a vehicle. This applies just as much for the weight-reducing warm air heating in the c-tourer or Chic c-line as for the well designed warm water heating in the more expensive Carthago models. With both heating systems, we have achieved record results in tests which have always been backed up in practice.

Before installation, there is the develop-ment phase. Here, the Carthago double floor construction and the interior coatingof the cabin with aluminium play a significant role. The heat is stored in theinsulated double floor, which has no thermal bridge, and where all the equipment is housed, protected against the frost. The living area floor is perma-nently heated by the cushion of warmthin the double floor. Thus, there are no cold floors in a Carthago motor home and therefore, no cold feet. In every c-tourer, the under floor heating is available asstandard!

P l u s p o i n t s :• Equipment packed away and protected against frost• Under floor heating effect• Standard frost-protected and heated tanks

The name Carthago stands for premium quality. This was and is a fundamental code for Carthago. A real premium motor home is convincing in terms of winter hardiness and permits all-year round use in difficult conditions. In this regard too, the new c-tourer is a real premium motor home, since it has all the air-conditioning and insulation technology that its big brothers and sisters have.

Due to its long experience in theupper range, Carthago is in the positionto apply premium technology as standardin all Carthago models in the productprogramme.

With Carthago, these quality features don‘t come as expensive retrospective upgrades - a Carthago has premium technology as standard.

Evidence necessary? Let‘s take the heat storage technology. For years, this heating system has been built into Carthago‘s successful Chic c-line model. It is only logical that the warm air channels in the double floor of the c-tourer, the optimal placement and number of heating outlets as well as complete ventilation situated behind the furnishings are perfectly matched to promote air circulation. This is one of the reasons for the great success of our motor homes for all-year use. In this respect, our air control systems have been proven in practice on an everyday basis.

The radiated heat is absorbed by the aluminium interiors of the walls, conducted across the entire wall surfaceand diffused. As a result, there is a pleasant effect of evenly spread and constant heat radiation. This is totally draught-free and long-lasting, since the warmth is in effect also stored in the wall surfaces and evenly distributed. Thisis something that cannot be achieved witha conventional wall construction witha timber interior wall. It is well known that aluminium is a better heat conductor and storage agent than wood.

P l u s p o i n t s :• Aluminium for heat storage on the interior of the wall• Constant, long-lasting heat distribution• Climatised wall coating as regulator for damp in room and for reduction of noise• Wall heating effect

Everything that applies for our const-ruction technology also applies for the supplies technology in the motor home. With our years of experience from the premium class, Carthago achieves the highest standards in this area as well.

Take the lighting technology as an example: since the 2011 model year,we have modern LED lighting in the living area of every model.

Changeover switches are in practice simple and make it easy to operate the lighting. The switches are at the rear, in the living area and entrance and are therefore accessible from every main area of the motor home.

State-of-the-art lighting is also present outside: In the c-tourer, there is an LED day driving light in operation. Your vehicle will consequently be seen earlier and better, your safety and that of other road userswill be enhanced.

P l u s p o i n t s :• Modern, economical LED lighting• LED day driving light for greater passive safety• Changeover switches located at several points for simple operation of lighting• Individual dimmers in the living area• LED in living area

Do you like to be in control? Then the intuitive panels in the c-tourer are exactly right for you. The levels and energy data can be easily read off fromthe clearly arranged control panel in the entrance area. Operation using the touch keys is very simple.

In exactly the same way, the entire water supply system is installed in a way that makes it easy to maintain. Openings for cleaning the tank are accessible via hatches in the climatised double floor, and in respect of the fresh water tank, access is via the seat pan. The cabin battery is located in a heated battery compartment that is easy to access, just like the heating in the lateral bench. The entire electrical centre is very acces-sible and well-arranged and is housed in the rear garage.

We insist on high performance water pressure systems in all models, the advan-tage being that they offer at every service point the same water pressure and are very easy to maintain and reliable.

P l u s p o i n t s :• Heated battery compartment• Operating panel that is easy to understand• Easy and quick access to all important supplies• High performance water pressure system• Electrics centre in rear

No one can produce furniture like a cabinet maker! That‘s why at Carthago we still have real cabinet makers producingour furniture with the highest craftsman-ship. Each cabinet body originatesentirely from our own cabinet makersin the three Carthago plants. We do notuse any cheap chip board bonded with solvent, but exclusively multi-bonded plywood with high stability. The resultis a level of quality you can see and feeland the very special and pleasant fragrance of a Carthago.

A speciality of Carthago is the jointing technology of the individual furniture parts, known as Durafix. These are notjust bolted together - as is common elsewhere - but are elaborately mortised in the true cabinet-maker tradition, using tongue and groove. The result is avery precise and long-lasting connection.

By placing the furniture groupings directly onto the double floor, Carthago achieves a very high degree of stability. The lasting stability does not come from suspending the furniture on the walls, but rather from the support it gets from being attached to the floor. Every furniture door is equipped with additional anti-knocking cushioning to reduce noise.

That‘s how it should be: The c-tourer doesn‘t show its talent straight away, but rather it is the price that gives away its little secrets. The folding bed, for example, virtually becomes invisible in the roof of the part-integrated versionwhen it is not being used - even from outside, it can hardly be seen under the snazzy domed roof.

When you lower it with the electric mechanism, there is a large sleeping sur-face area of 1.90 x 1.45 m.
