"Ifwe lose ""I f we win. . . . ."

Random thoughts from a random footbal galice.

The success of a sport in any school usually

depends on the sport's win-loss record. Win-

ning and losing consume the minds of athletes

to such an extent that the full enjoyment of

the sport is lost. Where ~as our pleasure in

participationgone? '

Or is it gone at all? I think we all have

shreds of that pleasure still remaining. Re-

cent magazine articles have called it by dif-

ferent names '- the "zen of running,""sports

yoga." Call it the nirvan'lof football - ab-

surd names don't change the central idea,

everyone of these is just an updated reference

to an old,honoredconcept- sportsmanship.

Ideal sportsmanship is not limited to those

on the playing field. If you can see beauty

and find pleasure in the playing of the game,

regardless of the final scire, then you have

realized the idea of sportsmanship. This is,

where we need to retrieve those shreads of plea-

sure. Winning isn I t ,the ojlly thing. It IS im-

portant, but it only an enhancement of the basic

-enjoyment, which is found in good sportsmanship.

Loof for it within you~self. So that when

you go home after the game, you can answer the

question "Who won?" by saying "I did," even ifthe team lost.
