Hi! I’m Sammie & I’m a one-year-old St. Bernard. I'm a loving, opinionated pup who’s not afraid to show it. That’s why you could imagine my reaction when my new family pulled up in the driveway with our New All Wheel Drive 2011 Subaru Outback. Boy I tell ya! When I saw that roomy interior, I stood panting at the window. I knew the days of leaving me behind were over! I’d be able to jump right in the back and go cruisin’ with the family. With 5 passenger seating, available rear-seat entertainment system and underfloor rear cargo-area storage, it’s heaven on wheels for a growing family like ours. Plus, most models come equipped with tri-zone climate control which allows my family to keep warm when I maybe want to cool down. (I get warm a lot, don’t judge me!)

Visit Brown Subaru on US 29 North (in front of Sam's Club) and check out theNew 2011 AWD Subaru Outback 2.5i, starting at $23,195*. And tell ‘em Sammie sent you!

“The 2011 Subaru Forester is a top pick inthe highly competitive SUV Segment”

- Edmunds.com, 2011

Hi I’m Charlie & I’m a two year old Great Dane. So I’d say Im kind of a big around here (well in our neighborhood anyway) though, there's a St. Bernard in town that I wouldn't mess with. I have many friends both big and small, human and non-human and when we get together my family needs a vehicle that will fit us all. You should have seen my face when my family pulled up in an all new 2011 Subaru Forester. With my paws stuck to the window of our home, I could not wait to hang my head out of that window and feel the wind on my face. (Though I only do this for a couple of seconds for fear of messing up my hair, it's well worth it) I knew that since all Subarus come with standard All Wheel Drive, that we could make more road trips, in any weather. Grand Canyon here we come! With state of the art safety features including child safety locks, an extensive airbag system and rollover sensors, our Forester is perfect for keeping our family safe on the road. Plus, with standard 8 cup holders in every Forester, my pals and I will never have to stop for refreshments.

Visit Brown Subaru on US 29 North (in front of Sam's Club) and check out theNew 2011 AWD Subaru Forester 2.5X, starting at $20,495*. And tell ‘em Charlie sent you!!

Sweet Parsley arrived at Caring For Creatures on December 7th, 1995. He was one of a litter of several Beagle mixes born to his mother, Blossom, right here at the sanctuary.

Parsley was a “shy guy,” much like his mother. Due to his shyness, Caring For Creatures remained his safe haven after his siblings went to their own forever homes. But do not feel badly for the little guy - to those lucky people who made a point to spend as much time as possible with Parsley, he was one in a million. He had a heart of gold, and strength of spirit to match!

Parsley proved his strength when he suffered rear paralysis at the young age of five. Soon after, Parsley began his very own chiropractic treatments. He got multiple adjustments, and even acupuncture! Partial paralysis could not keep the little guy down!

Parsley lived a long, special life here at Caring For Creatures. He spent his days lounging and playing with his loyal penmate, Rusty. Old age finally laid claim to the long life of this strong-willed survivor on 1/28/11. He passed away at the age of 16 years old. His friend, Rusty, was not far behind. He wanted nothing more than to be with his buddy on the other side.

Caring For Creatures suffered major snow damage in the winter of 2009. The weight of the snow caused the roof of one of the sanctuary’s outside buildings to collapse, displacing multiple dogs. Thanks to the kind people in the community, Caring For Creatures just celebrated the one year anniversary of its new structure – lovingly called “Parsley’s Place.”

Caring For Creatures is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit foundation established in 1987 as the first “no kill” sanctuary caring for homeless dogs and cats in Central Virginia. Its gates have been open to the public, as well as multitudes of homeless dogs and cats, since 1988.

CFC has a unique mission – to provide for the well-being of animals at risk and to encourage a sense of responsibility in the

people of our community by promoting programs and policies to help stem the number of animals entering care facilities.

Although the ultimate goal of the sanctuary is to place its residents into loving homes, if an animal is not selected for adoption, we offer high-quality care and companionship for that animal as long as needed.

In addition to caring for animals, Caring For Creatures maintains a strong Community Outreach Program that is fundamental to carrying out CFC’s overall goals. CFC believes that behind every unwanted litter, and any neglected, abused, or abandoned animal, there is a human who made an uneducated or misguided choice. CFC does its best to provide information and training tips, referrals, and in general, helps walk individuals through the steps they can take to problem solve. Equally important, CFC staff offer a patient and compassionate ear to callers in need of assistance.

CFC is located in Fluvanna County on 157 acres of gently rolling fields and woodlands. It now houses some 200 residents at a given time, costing the facility around $1,000/day to provide top notch care to each and every resident.

As Caring For Creatures receives no state funding, the facility can afford to keep its gates open thanks to the generous contributions and dedication of those caring individuals in our community. Please remember that the happy endings we create are made possible by your support.

The summer months bring special concerns to the pets we love. Pay attention to these issues and you and your pets can enjoy the summer together!

Hot carsNever leave a cat or dog unattended in a car! When it is just 75 degrees outside the temperature in a closed car can top 90 degrees in less than 20 minutes. Even rolling the windows down a bit or parking in the shade is not enough to keep the car safely cool. Dogs and cats can’t sweat to cool themselves like we do, and high temperatures can quickly overwhelm their ability to pant and release heat. It can be tempting to run some errands after you pick your pet up from the groomer but do yourself and your pets a favor and drop them off at home before you head around town.

Hot dogsDogs especially like to participate with us in our favorite outdoor activities, but be sure to pay attention to signs that your furry friend has had enough. Heat stroke is the extreme elevation of body temperature over 105° and can lead to organ failure and even death if not treated quickly. Signs of heat stroke include excessive panting, pale gums, thick salivation, disorientation, and collapse. If you notice any of these, get your dog to the nearest veterinarian as fast as possible for emergency treatment.

tick tock!Summer brings the humidity and temperatures that let external parasites like fleas and ticks thrive. Fleas can cause itching and scratching and can lead to skin infections and infestations in your home. Ticks carry diseases to dogs, cats, and humans. Protect your pets from both by using a monthly treatment recommended by your veterinarian. There are pills and topical choices that have been tested extensively and shown to be safe for pets while treating fleas and ticks. If you find a tick, remove it by grasping with tweezers as close to the skin as possible. Don’t worry about the old myth that you have to “get the head out,” digging for detached mouthparts can lead

to more damage and infection. Your dog’s skin will reject any foreign tick parts left as it heals.

Not lemoNs butlymeLyme disease is carried by ticks, and while it can be transmitted any time of year, it is more common when ticks are active, which is now! Acute lyme disease in dogs usually involves fever, decreased or absent appetite, lethargy, and lameness or stiffness in the legs. Some dogs show only some lameness or stiffness. If you notice any of these signs, call your veterinarian to have your dog examined and tested. The acute form of the disease is treatable with a common antibiotic and pain medication and most dogs respond to treatment successfully. There is also a vaccine available that will help protect your dog from Lyme disease. Ask your veterinarian if it is appropriate for your dog.

driviNgmissdoggieTaking pets on summer vacation can be fun for the whole family. Make sure to travel with cats in carriers and dogs on leashes to avoid an awful loss. Offer water at every stop and food when you arrive at your destination. Ask your veterinarian ahead of time for medication if your dog gets carsick and bring along flea treatment to avoid picking up unwanted visitors on your vacation getaway.

Summer can be a great time to have fun with your four-legged friends! Keeping these tips in mind can help ensure everyone enjoys the season in good health!

All hotels and motels are not the same. Similarly all pet lodging facilities are not the same. Lodging your loved one can be very stressful for both you and your pet. It is well worth investing time prior to an upcoming stay to lower both your and your pets stress.

Selecting Your lodgingFacilitYIn selecting your pets lodging facility it is recommended that you visit the facility and take a tour to see the sleeping accommodations; the area where your dog will be walked; and if play sessions are offered, where they are conducted and how. While touring the facility make a determination of the cleanliness of the facility and level of employee interaction with the pets. Take advantage of a trial board, if offered, to determine how your pet responds and give your pet the confidence that you will return to pick him up.

QueStionS to aSk during Your tour:• What Activities are offered? (Play sessions etc.)• Check-out time and policy?• Bedding – Can you rent or bring your own?• Food – Can you bring your own?• Grooming – Is it possible to get your pet bathed or groomed during the stay?• Hours of drop-off and pick-up – weekdays and weekends?• Medication – Will the facility disperse medication? If so, is there a charge?• Treats- Are they offered? Can you bring your own?

reQuired VaccinationSIt is critical that your pet’s vaccinations are current for the protection of your pet and the pets in the facility. Vaccinations should be given at least seven days prior to your pets stay. The typical required

vaccinations for dogs are: distemper, rabies and bordetella. Cats required vaccinations are distemper and rabies. You want your selected facility to confirm that vaccinations are current and takes steps to avoid any surprises at check-in.

reSerVationSIt is always good to give your lodging facility as much notice as possible prior to your pets stay. For the Christmas/ New Years and Thanksgiving holiday season it is recommended to make reservation six weeks in advance. Make sure you determine the facilities cancellation policy during your tour to avoid any surprises.

With honesty and compassion, we will provide our clients and their beloved companions with empathetic healthcare services that unite the best of conventional veterinary medicine and surgery with holistic, natural approaches. We will treat all patients as if they were our own and will consistently strive to better ourselves in a continuing effort to provide only the best possible care for our clients and their companions.

What is integrative veterinary Medicine?

Integrative veterinary medicine is a comprehensive medical approach to pet care that combines the best of conventional medicine with complementary and alternative therapies. This type of veterinary practice focuses on treating the whole animal, and each animal, as an individual. Integrative medicine is founded on the partnership between the client and the veterinarian to choose the best of all appropriate therapeutic options to achieve optimal wellness for your pet.

The goal of an integrative approach to veterinary medicine is to provide clients with all the options for pet care available. This is achieved by using conventional medicine diagnostics, medication, and

Do you find yourself saying “stop,” “hush,” “get down,” “bad dog,” “no!” or raising your voice when your dog misbehaves? Tired of your dog taking you for a walk? By understanding your dog’s behavior and the way they communicate, you can use positive reinforcement to have a better life with your pet. Some traditional obedience trainers still use methods of choke chains, pinch collars, and other harsh techniques. Modern day science teaches us that dogs learn better with operant conditioning and positive reinforcement or reward-based training. Reward-based training establishes effective communication between the pet and parent. The best professional dog trainers have the ability to combine the two disciplines of behavior and effective training.

Some people think their puppy will outgrow bad behavior. However if they are not taught proper manners, they will keep the annoying behaviors of jumping up, pulling, or nipping their whole life. Consequently, you can teach old dogs new tricks.

Using cues properly to train your dog will enhance communication. Don’t say your cues multiple times in a row; this will train them unknowingly not to listen to you. Use a reward such as a treat or toy to get your dog’s attention, then give her a couple seconds to think about it. If she still will not sit, then gently walk the dog in a circle once or twice. This gives your pet a “brain break.” Then redirect the dog’s attention on you by using the treat or toy. If your dog still will not sit, the environment might be too distracting.

Training is all about baby steps. If they’re able to sit in a quiet room, then the next step would be to perform cues in a room with a little more activity. Once they are doing well there, try the backyard followed by the front yard, a field down the road, and then a quiet section of a park. If you take big steps too soon, your progress could be wiped away. Remember to set your dog up for success.

When training your dog, you must have good timing. Dogs live in the present; they understand what goes on right now. If your puppy pottys outside and you wait to give them a treat inside, he does not connect that he gets the treat for the behavior of going potty. Instead, he wants to come inside quickly (sometimes without going potty) because that’s the behavior he is rewarded for. Generally, you have one to three seconds to reward them for the positive behavior.

Remember to use everyday activities as learning opportunities. Your dog is learning something good or bad every waking moment and it’s up to us to teach and guide them to better their behaviors. The best pet trainer allows you to be part of your dogs learning experience in a fun and exciting way.

Investing in your dog’s education

If you love animals, chances are you have been to the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, and if not, it is time to schedule a visit. The SPCA has something for everyone: cat lovers, dog lovers, guinea pig lovers, and more. There are wonderful animals available for adoption, and the SPCA makes it easy to get involved – open seven days a week from 12 to 6pm.

Even if you are not in the market for a new companion, there are so many other reasons to visit. You can simply stop by to brighten up your day with some puppy loving or get in your afternoon exercise by walking an SPCA dog through the landscaped Ronald Marcus Memorial Dog Walking Paths. Just want to feel special? Hang out and relax in the SPCA Scratching Post surrounded by cats purrin’ for your attention. You can also shop for your pet needs in the SPCA retail store or have your child’s birthday celebration in the SPCA’s humane education room.

The SPCA has been serving our community for over 50 years. Founded in 1955, the SPCA has come a long way from its initial grass roots efforts. The SPCA has grown into a national model animal welfare organization. For the past five years, with a 90% community save rate, the SPCA has made our Charlottesville-Albemarle community, a No Kill community – something only a handful of communities in the entire country have achieved. Since embarking on its No Kill mission, the SPCA has found homes for more than 20,000 animals; spayed and neutered more than 25,000; and provided life-saving medical care for an additional 12,000 animals. The SPCA also helps individuals with their pet needs by offering free and subsidized spay/neuter assistance, rabies clinics, temporary pet food assistance, and pet re-homing help. The

SPCA is here for, and is successful because of, our community. The SPCA is your community SPCA. It is an animal fun center for the entire family, bringing people and pets together. As an animal lover, consider becoming part of the SPCA family. Volunteer, donate, adopt, and shop at the SPCA and the SPCA Rummage Store. For more information, visit the SPCA’s website at caspca.org and follow the SPCA on Facebook and Twitter for the latest up to date information.

People often wonder what they can do with their pet in an emergency prior to coming in to the office. While the majority of treatments for your pet should be done by a veterinarian or a member of a veterinary staff, there are some things you can do to help your pet.

PreParing to transPort Your PetThe most important thing to remember is that you should never do anything to assist your pet that will cause harm to yourself. Even the most gentle pet, when in pain, may try to bite and/or scratch you. For dogs, placing a large blanket or towel over the head, with room for them to breathe, can help prevent injury to yourself. You can also use a towel with cats, and it’s a great idea to put on sturdy work gloves and a long-sleeved shirt prior to picking them up.

It’s also important, especially in patients that are having trouble breathing, to keep your pet sitting up on their sternum (chest) — that will help them aerate both sides of their lungs and breathe more easily. You can place thick towels on either side of them to keep them propped up in this position.

getting Bleeding under ControlWhen it comes to pet injuries, it is important to stay calm and focus on helping your pet. Having a first aid kit on hand for your pet is a very good idea. If there is foreign material sticking out of the wound, do not try to remove it yourself. The foreign object could be pressing against a blood vessel or penetrating an organ, and removing it could cause more harm than good.

For penetrating wounds (such as bites) and wounds that are bleeding heavily, apply firm pressure and place a firm pressure bandage over the wound. If the bleeding is on a limb, you can also try to raise that limb above the level of your pet’s heart to help slow the bleeding. For nose bleeding, apply ice to the bridge of the nose to slow it down and try to keep your pet laying on their sternum (chest), as we discussed above.

One of the most common bleeding problems we see on an emergency basis is a bleeding toenail. To bring the bleeding under control at home, you can place the bleeding toe in some corn starch, a bar of soap or a stick of underarm deodorant containing zinc.

dealing with toxiCitiesToxicities are also a common emergency we deal with here at Greenbrier Emergency. Always call a veterinarian if you suspect that your pet has gotten into something. Many people consider trying to make their pet vomit to remove the toxic substance, but inducing vomiting in a pet can cause more harm than good.

So many common plants are toxic to pets, we recommend keeping a list of the types of plants in and around your house. It helps us pinpoint the exact toxic agent and resolve the problem.

For other common toxic household substances like rat poison, try to keep them stored in a place that is inaccessible to your pet. If you smoke, don’t throw your used filters outside — any remaining tobacco, eaten by your pet in large enough quantities, can cause serious problems.

Call ahead! If you ever do have an emergency situation with your pet, if possible, please call a veterinarian or Greenbrier Emergency to let them know you’re on your way. That way they will be prepared to handle your pet’s specific problem and treat them as quickly and effectively as possible.
