The question needs to be asked, is this a late May Newletter or an early newsletter? The truth is that with 11 days away in May for DG Council meeting and the Echuca convention followed by 16 Change Overs and 20 days away from home in June finding the time to sit at a computer just became too hard. Whilst it has been great to see the above inductions plus more at other Clubs, June has been a very bad month for the District and it looks like we will finish the year at -20. Lots of work for DG Bryan to do but we will have Lameroo chartering hopefully in July with about 25 plus members.

The D.G.’s last word (or two)?????

As stated, it has been a great and memorable year for Margie and myself as we have travelled around our huge District visiting 61 Lions Clubs, 2 Lioness Clubs and 4 Leos Club several on two occasions and our own Tatachilla Convention. We also went further afield when attending C1’s Convention in Port

Pirie, travelling to New Zealand for ANZI and Echuca for the Multiple Districts Convention whilst not forgetting our Hawaiian adventure which started off out year. Everywhere we travelled we saw the signs of the great work being done by Lions worldwide whether it simply be signs welcoming visitors into town, parks and playgrounds, buses with Lions Logos on and buildings and memorials aplenty. It has been though the personal contacts and friendships that we have made along the way that will remain in our memories forever. The generosity of Clubs and individuals throughout the year has been much appreciated and a sincere thank you to those who have welcomed us into their homes, some on many occasions such as Cheryle and Scott, Frank and Annie, Judy and Frank, Ron and Nina, Peter and Lyn and Brenda and Alet, Tom & Jill and others. Being absent from home for long periods at a time can get a bit much and being able to have a little bit of normality and people to talk with has been great. In saying that however, my decision to do all of the visits this year was for me the right one!

I won’t go through the highlights of the year as most have been mentioned in other newsletters but there have been some significant achievements by the District throughout the year. We are one of the leading Districts in the 100 Clubs 100 Stories Centennial Project not only in Clubs participating but also in projects that have been applied for and this is a credit to us. One that can’t be forgotten is the progress of the Skin

Cancer Screening Project. Thanks to the generous support of many Clubs in the C Districts combined with substantial grants from both LCIF and ALF and the ongoing work of PDSG????? Rhys Roberts and the Lions Medical research foundation it is probable that the Project will be up and running early in 2017. We are on the brink of two new Clubs (Lameroo and Adelaide Hills and Leos are starting to gain momentum in several areas of the District. It is also fantastic to see that our female membership continues to grow and has lifted from 17% to around 26% and I am seeing many of our female members accepting the challenge of leadership positions in many clubs.

I would like to also thank all the many members and partners who mad the effort to attend the Echuca Convention, many being first time conventioneers. We had the most delegates registering at convention and it was by far the largest contingents we have had attend. The combined C2 & C1 get together

was a tremendous success with all people present seeming to have a great time and it was a good opportunity for the two Districts Governors and Cabinets too say thank you for members support throughout the year. A huge thank you Cheryle and her crew (Scott, Frank & Annie) for organising the night. AND FINALLY I must say a huge thank you to my darling wife. Of the 65,000 kilometres travelled she has been there for every one of them. I gave her a task to do at the start of my year, as C2 Hearing Dogs Chair, and she took to it on with a vengeance giving over 70 presentations to clubs. Whilst she started slowly there is now no stopping her as she has just been appointed as the C Districts Hearing Dog Chairperson for the next three years also. Along the way she has also collected over $2,500 for the foundation. Thank you Margie.

2015/16 District Governor Disbursements

One of the great jobs of the District Governor at the end of their year is being able to disburse donations to

various organisations on behalf of the District. Much of these disbursements come from the Xmas Cake

rebates allocated to Districts based on how many cakes are sold by Clubs throughout the year. THIS IS

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT FOR CLUBS TO SELL THEM.

Our Districts continues to do very well based on kilograms sold relative to Clubs per District and this year

saw a good increase over the previous one with a rebate of $9,408. Of this just under $1,000 is allocated

to the Districts equipment fund leaving almost $8,500 for disbursements. There is also an allocation for

ALF and LCIF Awards.

I recently sent an email to all clubs seeking suggestions as to where these funds could be disbursed and I

was very impressed with the response with about 20 Clubs coming back with some diverse and special

ideas and I sincerely thank the clubs that did respond.

Whilst all of the responses were considered I obviously could not have allocated to all of them and my

allocations have seen what I think is a good balance of District Projects, Club projects and a couple of

National projects. By far the biggest request was for the Skin Cancer Screening Project and that was

recognised accordingly and as I have been promoting our Districts Foodbank Project I also recognised it.

The years’ disbursements are,

District Projects Sleeping Rough $1,000 Foodbank $2,000 Carolyn’s Chemo Caps $500 Skin Cancer Screening $2,000 Multiple District Projects Special Olympics (S.A.) $1,000 ACCRF $500 Club Projects Bramwell House $600 Trauma Teddies -Mt Barker $400 R.S.L. Defibrillator -Mt Gambier $500 Awards Service Awards $2,500 total $10,500

Around the Clubs Berri Once again we held our pyjama drive at the Plaza in Berri. This year we were able to collect approximately 90 pairs of pyjamas and some slippers and baby quilts. Also we received $560 in donations to purchase pyjamas in the sizes that were not donated. Donations were also received from Angoves Winery in Renmark who collected some pyjamas and from Bunnings in Berri. B&B Fashion and Fabrics were again generous with the purchasing of pyjamas. We would like to thank all who helped and donated. (pictured – Lions Les & Willy Weidenhofer in their pyjamas)

Robe and Districts After over a year in organising and along the way more than a bit of internal turmoil it was great to see that the Robe Lions Jumbo Landing, Phase 1 was finally underway. This phase saw the completion of the extensions to the existing Jumbos Landing completed and ready for use by keen anglers on the Queens Birthday Long weekend. Phase two, the levelling of the car park area with over 100 ones of dirt supplied by the Robe and District Council is now also well under way. The original landing was the result of a project by the ‘old’ Robe Club some 25 or so years ago and was built to give locals and tourists alike a place to fish out of the sometimes wild and wooly weather seen at Robe, Australia’s best drive on beach. Over time, the water levels receded to a point that fishing was no longer a viable option. Thanks to the success of the Clubs Second Chance Op Shop, finances became available to tackle this long talked about Project and with the aid of an AFL Grant and local business and council support the Club has undertaken what is its first major community project since reforming some 8 years ago.

New Club President Dave Thomas has thanked the efforts of Lion Jim Smith for his ongoing commitment as the projects coordinator and says that once phase 6 is completed the project will provide a safe and friendly family environment where people can fish, and watch the many species of bird and wildlife that frequent the area

2017 Centennial International Update

Centennial Banners – Sections of a Centennial Banner as well as district banners will be circulating and may show up at your meetings for members to sign. Once assembled, the Centennial Banner will be featured at the 100th International Convention in Chicago and the district banners will be featured at the Chicago convention in the parade and first plenary session. Centennial Torches – Eight torches will be used in ceremonies for each constitutional area forum and the All-Africa Conference. In June 2017 at the Chicago Convention, flames from torches from around the world will merge to light the Centennial Cauldron. Centennial Forum Exhibits – Each constitutional area will develop a special Centennial exhibit for the 2016–17 International Forums. Reminders

Incoming Club Presidents – please consider appointing a Centennial Coordinator in your club for the next two years who can oversee any centennial activities and who can act as a contact for your club on other centennial matters. Incoming Club Secretaries - please ensure that all service activities are recorded on the MyLCI website, recording the number of people served and also any centennial legacy project that your club may be involved in. Worldwide Week of Service for Youth on August 8–14 – why not join this special Centennial Service Challenge event by hosting a service project to help youth in your community? Engaging youth in service projects is a great way to develop the next generation of Lions too! I am able to provide a copy of the series of centennial videos on DVD on request if you are unable to download them from the Lions 100 website and burn them on to a DVD yourself. There are currently five videos in the series with the sixth and final one, to be released soon. If your club would like a DVD, please contact me on 0418 812 646 or [email protected] and I can post one to you. There is a lot of information on the Lions website to help your club make your Centennial celebration a success so check it out at http://lions100.lionsclubs.org/EN/toolbox/index.php. Melinda Fogden, 201 C2 Centennial Coordinator

Youth of the Year Another YOTY year has concluded. I congratulate all students who made use of the opportunity to enter the program and to test themselves as individuals. The new environment of the interviews before a panel would have certainly tested students’ mettle. Nevertheless, a great experience to stand all in great stead for any future endeavours. I continue to be amazed by the topics chosen for the prepared speeches

and the confident and passionate manner in which students deliver them to a captured audience. Well done to our C2 candidates who reached the District final at Red Cliffs and who were ably supported by their respective Clubs. The State final was no exception and well done to Bethany, Ruby and Connor who proved great C2 ambassadors. Bethany Williams from Mitcham Lions, the State winner attended the national event at Echuca where she performed very well. I will be conducting two YOTY Workshops in August - Hahndorf and Penola

Sunday August 14th at the Hahndorf Football Club rooms, Echunga Road, Hahndorf - 10 am(Morning Tea) for 10-30 Start. Cost $10 including light lunch. RSVP to Ann by August 5th 2016

Sunday August 28th at the Penola RSL Hall, Crn Young and Queen Streets, Penola. Same details

as for Hahndorf. RSVP to Ann by August 19th 2016 Both workshops will have a segment after lunch, “The Student Experience” with presentations by past State Winners, followed by another short YOTY activity. The program will cover all aspects about YOTY - the Rules, obligations for student, judges, schools and club hosts. Ideally, both are open to all clubs but I’m targeting Zones 3 to 8 for Hahndorf and Zones 10 and 11 for Penola. I am very much aware that many people are still taking YOTY as another ‘thing’ on the calendar. YOTY is a National program and deserves us all to know what is involved. New YOTY chairmen will benefit as will Club President and Zone Chairmen as the positions change regularly from year to year. How many Club officers really know how to plan, organise and run a club final? Then come along for a new learning experience. I also, urge representation of clubs which do not participate in the program - I may invite you to host a regional!! Make use of the opportunity to “Get-the-low-down” on YOTY. I’m on the lookout for host clubs for all Regionals, the District and State finals for 2017. Ann Hughes ( C2 District YOTY Chairman)

Lionsonoz in Action While Travelling to Moree to join up with the Lions Vanners to wend their way to Echuca last month, Lionsonoz President Lion Ted Pickwell and Lion Hazel called in on Lions Kel and Yvie Kearns at Woolgoolga and took delivery of a vast amount of baby jackets, jumpers and beanies especially knitted by the Lionsonoz ladies for premature babies. This is an ongoing project undertaken by the ladies, which helps to fill in the time between towns on their travels and also is a very worthwhile project as well. This batch was presented to the Moree Hospital Obstetrics ward by Lion Hazel and the matron there was very pleased to receive them. This latest issue should keep the Moree hospital in premature baby’s clothes for many months to come.

Australian Lionsonoz does not have an Activities account, nor does it conduct fund raising projects so the knitting project allows the members to participate in voluntary work while travelling all over this great land of ours. Anyone who would like to participate in the Australian Lionsonoz program would be very welcome and for more details they could contact Lionsonoz Lion Yvie on 0427 497 660. Lion Warren White. LCIF

Dear Lions,

I recently spent time in Sri Lanka, a small country that has five Lions eye hospitals serving a population of over 21 million people. LCIF has helped fund all five eye hospitals. I was very impressed with the facilities, their level of care and the active involvement of the local Lions.

On a recent trip through the United States, I visited a fantastic Lions KidSight USA program in Iowa. KidSight USA is a national coalition that brings together Lions vision-screening programs for young children. Last year, Iowa KidSight screened more than 46,000 children, ranging in age from six months to six years. Five percent of those children needed to see an eye doctor. That means 2,300 children might still be living with visual impairments if not for KidSight USA! Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) supports the screening programs through grant funding.

Good things happen when we work together, and I am so proud of the work that Lions do to improve the lives of people in their communities and around the world. Remember, it is only through your generosity that we are able to improve the lives of millions every year. As we approach the end of the fiscal year, please consider making a donation so that LCIF can reach its fundraising goal and continue changing lives.

Together in Service,

Joe Preston

Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation

Defeating Trachoma

Lions and LCIF are very active in the fight against trachoma. To date, LCIF's SightFirst program has awarded more than US$47 million to The Carter Center to combat this disease. Trachoma: Defeating a Blinding Curse is a documentary feature film that follows The Carter Center staff, global health partners, and Lion and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter in their efforts to eliminate blinding trachoma in Ethiopia.

Lions Quest at the United Nations The United Nations General Assembly convened late last month to discuss comprehensive strategies to tackle the world's drug use problems. This was the largest UN event concerning drug use in nearly a decade. LCIF was there to represent Lions' commitment to drug prevention and to advocate for the healthy development of all children through programs like Lions Quest. Lions Quest has demonstrated that prevention works, and the world is taking notice.

Lions Golf championships

Dear Lions, We are pleased to invite you to the Lions Golf World Cup & European Championship.

From October 30 through November 6, 2016, come meet your fellow Lions in Andalucía, Spain, and compete in a tournament that benefits the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). Andalucía is a paradise for golf lovers with over 100 golf courses and exceptional climate, sun and warm weather all year round. Almenara Golf Resort is part of

it, surrounded by great golf courses and only a long tee shot away from Ryder Cup course Valderrama, the #1 golf course in Europe. The deadline to receive the "early bird booking rate" is June 10, 2016. Be sure to reserve your spot and save by
