Greetings Fellow Lions As I sit down to write my final report as your District Governor, my first thought is Where did that year go?and What an amazing journey it has been! The year started off with Dis- trict Governors training in Chicago followed by the Lions Clubs International Conven- tion. As we all know Chicago is the birthplace of LCI and what a wonderful experience it was to be there for the Centen- nial Celebrations. On our return we commenced our schedule of Club visits and set about planning the October District Convention held in Adelaide and hosted by the Lions Club of Edwardstown. An invitation was extended to International First Vice Presi- dent Gudrun Yngvadottir and PID Jon Bjarni Thorsteinsson to attend. I had spent considerable time in discussion with Dr Bob Coulthard who had given me his full support to achieve our goal of having future Interna- tional President Gudrun attend our convention. PENOLA SENDS HAY TO ASSIST BUSHFIRE RAVAGED AREA

On the 9th January a bush-fire at Sherwood which if 30km north west of Border-town killed 2000 stock and destroyed 12000 hectares of land. Police later confirmed that on the day of cata-strophic fire warnings a faulty electric fence had caused the massive fire. To assist in the recovery process the Penola Lions Club has organised the deliv-ery of a semi-trailer load of hay from Penola to the farmers in the area whose land was impacted by the bushfire. On behalf of Penola Lions Graham Hinze today extend-ed thanks to Koch Bros who transported the hay free of charge to Sherwood. Special mention must also go to the driver Gary Koch for the time and effort he put in in ensuring the hay load was delivered to those most in need.

Berri donates Defibrillator Berri Lions Club was pleased to be able to donate a Defibrillator to the Berri Football Club. Members, of course, hope that it will never have to be used, but instead will pro-vide “just in case” backup in an emergency

These units have become something that more and more clubs are investing in for both the community and to have around dur-ing club events. Have you looked to see if there is a need for your club to buy a unit or a need for one in your community?

Other pre-Institute activities included a meeting evalua-tion checklist of our club and Lions: Past Present and Fu-ture; Supporting Lions teams, Lions mentoring pro-gram and conducting effec-tive meetings. At the Institute, I met and collaborated with several other participants who shared my topic of LCIF Sight and we collectively prepared and delivered a 10 minute presentation on the topic for the entire institute class. A highlight of our presentation was being intro-duced by Ivan Keller (which was a picture of an eye and a van) a lecturer at a college in Seaview and his great, great, great, great grand-mother’s Christian name was Helen and followed the time line from 1925. There were 6 participants from Australia and 39 from New Zealand making a total of 45. Australian participants were from Orange, Maitland, Canberra Valley, Valla, Red-land Bay – Victoria Point and McLaren Districts Clubs. in Queensland

On the Saturday night of the Institute a Dinner Meeting was held and run by some of the participants. Joanne Moriatry from Waihi and myself were the Tail Twist-ers and handed out fines to, the best dressed male facili-tators, PDG Cliff Heywood, NZ and PDG Satyo Fladone, Jakarta, those who didn’t pay airline taxes, the person that drew the longest straw, and so on. The fines raised approximately $NZ140 and it was donated to LCIF measles campaign The Institute was extremely beneficial. I gained greater knowledge, skills and confi-dence in taking on my future Presidents role. Selwyn Voss Submitted

Lions Hearing Dogs Visit

I was very excited to hear that Lions Hearing Dogs were going to begin a Volunteer program and I cleared my diary to make sure I could attend the initial meeting.

I was doubly delighted to hear that they were going to a have a pilot Puppy Program too. Having recently met the de-lightful dog Audrey when she visited our community Schnit-zel Night tea, I could under-stand why they would want more dogs of her size and temperament in the training programme. She is a sweet-heart and will be a wonderful asset to her hearing impaired owner once her training is complete.

The ELLI institute was con-ducted from April 6th – 8th 2018 at the Commodore Air-port Hotel, Christchurch New Zealand. My participation to attend was supported by the Lions Club of McLaren Districts, along with a successful application for support from the City of Onkaparinga’s Community Training and Development Fund signed by President Brian Rayner. The application to council provided financial assistance towards my attendance at the Institute, helping to further develop my leaderships skills that will support and encour-age our members to further engage in a more active role in the community. In March the club was advised by the council that the maximum amount of $1000.00 was ap-proved. The remaining costs of the travel, registration fee, etc were to be paid by myself. As part of attending, I com-pleted several pe-assignment components for the Institute, including my groups topic of researching LCIF Sight.

Centennial Celebrations

June is the final month of our official Centennial celebra-tions and I would like to thank the District for trusting me with the unique appoint-ment of Centennial Coordi-nator over the past four years. I was appointed District Cen-tennial Coordinator after taking on the position of 2013 Convention Chair when my club, Yankalilla & District, hosted our District Conven-tion. I said yes to the Centennial Coordinator role even though I had no idea really what I was agreeing to, because, obviously our organisation had never cele-brated a centenary before! I am very grateful for the experience and thank every-one for their support of the centennial. As a reminder, the four areas of service focus for the cen-tenary were:

• Engaging Our Youth;

• Sharing the Vision;

• Relieving the Hunger

• Protecting Our Environment Halting Diabetes is the fifth and most recently added area of service focus. With LCI’s aim of serving 100 million people during the four year celebration, I am

very happy to report that, at the time of writing, a total of 38,205 clubs have reported 233,021,688 people being served through the Centen-nial Service Challenge. This more than doubled the original Service Challenge goal of 100 million, so is a very impressive achieve-ment. What an impact our organi-sation continues to have, right across the world, as the total number represents almost 6 million people eve-ry year and almost 16,000 people each and every day! Also, 29,040 Centennial Legacy Projects have been carried out by 10,379 clubs. These are projects that connected clubs with their community and are visible gifts to the community, cre-ating a lasting legacy of the Lions club’s service contri-butions, and serving as a reminder of just how im-portant each club is to its community and beyond. I am sure that most clubs were involved in some sort of Centennial legacy and service projects and at a level that suited each club whatever that may have been. One of the Australian pro-jects I have been very proud to be involved in was

working with Australia Post on the release in the middle of last year of a set of post-age stamps commemorating our centenary. They looked great and certainly lifted the profile of our organisation and the centennial. Another great initiative to come out of the Centennial in Australia is the establishment of Lions Awareness Day on the first Saturday in March and I hope that more clubs get involved in the Day in the future as it has been estab-lished as a national, annual event. The Day is a wonder-ful opportunity for us to help raise the profile and aware-ness of Lions in the communi-ty and to attract people, just like us, who would like to volunteer to support their community by joining our organisation. During the Centennial cele-brations, 654,522 in 6,079 clubs joined Lions so hopeful-ly many of them will enjoy their involvement and be-come long-time members. With our Centennial celebra-tions coming to a close, I am sure you will join me in wish-ing our Lions organisation all the best for the next 100 years! Melinda Fogden Centennial Coordinator

International President’s Medal

As Centennial celebrations come to an end, Internation-al President Naresh Ag-garwal made available 200 International Present’s Med-als to recognise significant Centennial Projects. Centennial Coordinator Melinda Fogden nominated the Zone 11 Centennial project Centennial Memorial which was endorsed by District Governor Judy. Past Zone Chairman Peter Pignotti received one of 20 International Presidents Medals that were presented

throughout Australia, recog-nising his sterling efforts as chairperson of the project. This medal is one of only 200 presented worldwide, The 20 recipients was an-nounced at the Multiple District Convention in Townsville and District Gov-ernor Judy accepted the medal on Peters behalf, and subsequently made the presentation to Peter Per-sonally at a recent South East event.

Youth of the Year

The participating clubs for 2018 - 2019 will be issued shortly with the new forms and certificates as stated in the last month’s edition. Your Club’s YOTY coordina-tor/Chairman should dis-pose of the old ones. Please lock in the dates for 2019 as per the schedule included in this edition. It will be satisfying to see a big improvement by partici-pating clubs, new and old ones, to enter the program. Lions offers this golden op-portunity for all our second-ary schools to source stu-dents to take up the chal-lenge and give - it - a go (the YOTY Program).

Whilst there are about four clubs to enter regularly by December, the rest in Feb-ruary, I suggest contact to the schools early to “drum up” and promote YOTY. Take the first step of con-tact with a letter outlining the program and making an appointment to meet with the Principal or staffer. Ensure you give a clear outline of information about the program. For those who are regulars, send your contact the list of dates for 2019. It would be advantageous in C2 to have those clubs who generally do not par-

ticipate and have one or more schools in their midst to take that initial step, that is to as-sign a member to be the Club’s YOTY Chairman who can then source the schools for students. You will not go it alone as there will be ample assistance available. As this is my last YOTY contri-bution, I have enjoyed the opportunity to share the won-ders of YOTY, its rules, re-quirements and the successes with you all. Remember as clubs, “ You Just Can’t Lose”. To run any final is needs solid preparation for a great event. The rewards are so worthwhile to you and your club as hosts. Ann Hughes

During the Multiple District Convention in Townsville, LCIF (Lions Clubs Interna-tional Foundation) recog-nised the ‘Top Five’ Dis-tricts from throughout the constitutional area. C2 was recognised as one of the 5 top donating dis-tricts and in the absence of District Chairperson, PDG Trevor Jacobs, DG Judy accepted the award on his

and the district’s behalf. District Governor Judy took the opportunity during a recent South East visit to present the recognition to Trevor for his stewardship of the remarkable effort.

Stamp Club Record Donation

The Lions Australia Stamp Club is a special focus club aimed at collecting used stamps and selling them to collector and re-sellers for profit. This club donates all its funds raised to the Austral-ian Lions Children Mobility Foundation to allow AUS-SIE Kids to walk in Hart Walkers. This year the mammoth effort of all clubs who sup-port the stamp collection project allowed the club to donate a record $25,500 to the Foundation.

This is a simple way to support a great cause. Many clubs in our district already support this easy way to raise funds, but there is always room for more. Mt Gambier Lionesses Celebrate 40 Years

In a slightly different celebra-tion, members of the Lioness Club of Mt Gambier celebrated their 40th Anni-versary of Charter with a High Tea. 90 Members, past members and invited guests joined the club in the City Hall, where an impressive array of sandwiches, cakes and utter delicacies were on offer to those attending. Each place setting was furnished with a beautiful china trio of matching cup saucer and tea plate, and we are assured there was not a ‘hand painted periwin-kle’ in sight.

An impressive collection of teapots and cosies was also on display to the delight of all. The stunningly decorated cake was cut by president Gail Green and the original Charter President, and only remaining Charter member, Claire Welch. Two former Charter Mem-bers, Gaylene Foster and Glad Mann were also able to join the members for the celebration. Also in attend-ance was District Governor Judy Glastonbury, DGE Da-vid Snook and Lioness Pam, Mayor of Mt Gambier Andrew Lee and representatives from Soroptimists, The Junction

Lions Eye Health Program—World Eye Health Day

SAVE THE DATE World Sight Day (WSD) is an annual day of awareness held on the second Thursday of October, to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment. World Sight Day 2018 is on 11 October 2018 This year LEHP is focusing their promotional and mar-keting efforts towards the importance of Children’s Eye Health. We are implement-ing a 2 stage promotional initiative! 1. Local Libraries LEHP has created a magni-fying bookmark with a key

message of ‘as a rule test young eyes before starting school’. We are encouraging clubs to order a bulk supply of the bookmarks and donate them to their local library. During the months of October we are asking librarians to distribute a bookmark every time a child checks out a book. Accompanying the bookmark will be a LEHP brochure - reminding parents of the im-portance of having their chil-dren’s eye’s assessed. LEHP is offering the magnify-ing bookmarks to Lions clubs at a subsidised cost of $50 per 100 bookmarks.

2. Bumper Stickers Outside car bumper stickers have been created to com-pliment the World Sight Day children’s campaign. These stickers are free of charge. We encourage Li-ons clubs to order a bulk supply and place them on motor vehicles, shop win-dows, preschools and com-munity noticeboards. Contact your District LEHP Chairperson or see Secre-tarial Administration email for next month for order forms

Mental Health Group, Sunset Community Kitchen, and Lynette Hirth from the Look Good Feel Better Work-shops, all organisations that the club has been involved with over the years. In the case of Look Good, Feel Better, the relationship has been ongoing for 14 years. This Lioness Club is the longest surviving club in our District, and indeed in our state. It joins a small cadre of clubs who have reached the 40 year milestone.

Lions District 201C2 Convention 2018

Lions of the world unite! The top end will bite.

DO NOT RISK YOUR LIFE. DO NOT RISK YOUR SANITY.

DO NOT ATTEND THE TOTALLY TOP END CONVENTION OF 2018

It is important 201C2 Lions continue your good work and fellowship and do not risk your very existence with the dangers of the Totally Top End. Tick-Tock the crocodile is coming and it eats lions for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Those hard of hearing will not hear the tick-tock. Those who don’t run quick enough will hear the tick-tock too loudly. So many more reasons why you should NOT join us at Totally Top End Lions District 201C2 Convention 2018.

• We have dangerous sunsets where the sky gets so red and pink and yellow you will be blinded by the beauty.

• Do not view the sunsets over the sea at Mindil Beach where the extreme, totally extreme, colours mingle with the sea.

• Nor eat any of the dozens of cuisines at the Mindil Beach Market that may stretch your taste buds to delight. The Mindil Market has the worst drummer and didgeridoo player in Darwin.

• Do not wander-in in your sleeveless shirt in the attractive warmth of the Darwin even-ing. Wrap up, put on your pyjamas and stay at home.

• Be scared as the plentiful plovers pluck and swoop you.

• Jelly is great for kids parties but the Box Jelly is really bad. Can you find more miserable Lions than the Darwin Lions? All they can do with beer cans is make boats out of them! Here we demonstrate Darwin got it wrong and it is not survival of the fittest. If you must, don’t register now and book a cheap flight. Leave it to later and pay more. The best accommodation is only for the risk takers. Don’t take risks. Do not go to our web page where can register -https://sites.google.com/view/darwinlions2018 Martin J
