Club Visits November October has been a busy month for Jill & me. Our first Club visit for the month was to Millicent Lions Club on the 1st of October, the Lioness Club the following night then off to Beachport the next night. We had the oppor- tunity to spend time absorb some of the great scenery in this part of the country being hosted by PDG David Snook and wife Pam. The next event was the District Convention held at Mt Gambier and while I am probably biased I think it was a very successful convention. Malcolm Laslett and his team are to be congratulated on a great effort. The Gambier City Lions Club and the Mt Gambier Lioness Club assist- ed with the event and I wish to thank all the Mt Gambier com- munity for their input. On Friday night we experi- enced a great flag ceremony, then Dr Joe Collins gave a very moving address on the progress of the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. Saturday we had the usual business session then Sheryl Jensen gave a presentation on Membership building and retention. Toby Crawford then followed up with information regarding the benefits of work- ing with the Youth in the community, in particular how to develop Leo Clubs. Once again thank you Mt Gambier for a very enjoyable weekend. For the remainder of the month we visited Blackwood, Flinders University (where I inducted 5 new members), Irymple and Mildura clubs. Jill and l also spent a Sunday afternoon at the McLaren Vale Lions Clubs Health Expo. While the attend- ances were down on expecta- tion it was a great day and a lot of work had been put in to make an enjoyable day. The last event for the month was a trip to the V6 District Convention where Jill and I were the guests of DG Omen. It was good to see how other districts run their conventions and to meet fellow Lions and understand what they do in their community. The slopes of the craters of Mount Gambier were the venue for our 2019 District Convention. District Governor Tom welcomed about 200 Lions, Lionesses partners and guests to Casadio Park. The weekend began with Cabinet meeting, followed by a civic reception hosted by Mayor Lynette Martin. The convention opened on Friday with opening ceremo-nies, welcomes and, a Flag ceremony supported by the cadets Mt Gambier Division of St John Ambulance. We were then addressed by Dr Joe Collins on Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, followed by sup-per.

Saturday began with Keynote Speaker Past International Director Sheryl Jensen who had members on their feet having some fun. PID Sheryl assisted DG Tom to present International Presi-dent’s Certificates of appreci-ation to Judy Glastonbury, Rob Winter and Graeme Bot-ting. The business Session fol-lowed, during which nominees for the District Governance Team for 2020/2021 present-ed their nomination speeches, as well as the Trustee for the Lions Medical Research Foundation, and a bid to host the 2021 Convention. This bid was successful. Before lunch and voting PDG David Snook presented

Each long weekend the Lions Club of Meningie sets up their very successful Driver Reviver Station at Lions Park in the centre of town. Meningie is a great stop after travelling in either direction, they are never short of drivers who are happy to see the Reviver Station and are happy to browse the books on offer and partake of a lovely sausage, a warm cuppa and a friendly chat. Adjacent to a wonderful adven-ture playground it is ideal for families to take a break too.

Down Memory Lane with PDG Bob Korotcoff

(If any Club has a similar story from the past, please send details to PDG Bob Korotcoff at [email protected])

In 1978 Lucindale Lions members Tony Coates and Andrew McWaters organised a Machinery Field Day on Tony’s property South of Callendale. We have no record of this day, but this sparked the idea of running an annual Field Day on Lucindale Oval, incorpo-rating a Tractor Pull as an added attraction. This worked with a Friday crowd of 500 and Saturday, with Tractor Pull, drawing in excess of three times Friday’s attendance. Thinking back to the first Lucindale event, we barely filled the oval, and we had more or less needed to beg machinery companies to attend. We now cover an area of 20 hectares with up to 600 sites and with a waiting list on some occasions for late exhibi-tors. Likewise the Tractor Pull grew from farm tractors with a few modified tractors to having the National Champi-on Puller “Plum Crazy” built by local Tom McWaters. In 1990, we eventual-ly concentrated only on Field Days because of the noise distraction of the Tractor Pull taking away from the Field Days, appearance money becoming an issue and lack of interest from some of the interstate contestants; but it did place Lucindale on the map. In 1991, Gerald Martin a Penola Farmer addressed the club with a view to starting a yard dog competition, the first was an immediate success and history shows that we have had many State and National championships held at Lucindale. In 1996 we were asked to run both State and National Dog Champion-ships which would leave us with not enough area. We had already pre-planned and bought an adjacent block from a Lions member so were forced to move the Field Days onto the new site one year earlier than we expected. It was an extremely busy year for members. One of our wise Lions members quoted “that what started out as a Lions project has grown to be a huge Community Project”. This is true as we can no way run the Field Days on our own. We now have up to 300 volunteers from other clubs and organ-

isations assist us on BBQ’s gates, parking etc. These groups combined can earn up to $20,000 for the own organisations. If it was not for the South East Field Days, Lucindale would be a very differ-ent place. The Field days have been able to raise sufficient funds for the Lions Club to be able to give away $2.4m to local Hospitals inc. $100k towards Naracoorte CT Scan; $88,000 Lucindale Area School Swimming pool, along with donations to sporting clubs, charities, along with district, national and international disasters. The early days of the Field Days we ran with a theme until we eventually ran out of ideas. Throughout the 41 year period we have had 16 Presidents, 8 Secretary’s. One Secretary held the post for 11 years and another for 8 years. These were all volunteers until 2005 when we employed a full time Secretary. Over the years we have many varied attractions including fashion parades; cooking demonstrations; quilt displays; Bob-Cat ballet; sky divers; various motor cycle events; truck pull; hot air balloons; Flying Pigs; axe men; Blue Yakka Trail; mail box competitions for the adults; scarecrow & billy cart competitions for the kids; SA Yard Dog Competitions; animal nursery; Carlton Draft Horses; SA Police Band; Super

Tank Fishing Show; and “Remember When” retro fashion parades, Of course in the beginning all maps were hand drawn and records kept as paper files. Now all the plans are recorded on five overlaid C.A.D drawn maps of all underground infrastructure. Yakka Park has grown and begun to adopt other events to the venue. There has been the very successful Music Festival held for a number of year and B&S Balls with one being held earlier this month at the site. The recent coup, of course, was working with ABC -Triple J to host the “One Night Stand” free concert. The event was broadcast nationally on ABC Radio, livestreamed on the ABC iView, and replayed on Rage on ABC TV, adding another event to put our little town on the map. Attracting some 15,000 young people, this not only financially benefitted Lucindale, but the whole of the Limestone Coast, with the production teams and concert goers filling up all available accommodation within a 2 hour drive, and them all spending freely on fuel , food and general supplies. With the ongoing growth and success of the Lucindale Field Days and the ongoing use of the Yakka Park site for other events, we are sure that Lucindale Lions’ Yakka Park will have an amazing future.

On Sunday October 27th PDG Bryan Hearn, his wife Lion Kay Hearn and Lion Rob Winter travelled to Broken Hill to conduct a ‘hand-on’ Vision Screening Workshop. Despite some road works and detours that took them onto about 100kms of dirt roads, they managed to arrive only 10 minutes late. Luckily at one point they achieved mobile phone coverage and were able to advise their situation and postpone the training session for one hour. Six members of the Broken Hill club attended the training workshop. Of these, three current or former teachers were identi-fied as possible screening Instructors for future training sessions. The Broken Hill club had been asked to source 12 to 20 students for a sample screening to be conducted the next day. On Friday a message arrived to say that there would be 40 to screen. Upon arriving at the Broken Hill North Public School on Monday morning it was

advised that about 6 of the students were away on a sporting trip to Ballarat. That news prompted a sigh of relief. The relief was short lived as once the forms started coming from the office to the screening room it turned out that 91 students had requested to be involved. The school was amazed, as this was the biggest response from parents that they had received for any activity they had ever run. Bryan and Kay handled documenting the permission slips and allocating numbers to the students while the 3 Broken Hill Lions present conducted the vision acuity, colour and depth tests and Rob managed the spot screener camera. Just before the students started arriving a reporter from the local paper visited to take some notes and photos. Rob briefed him on the program and its purpose and explained the screening processes. He was also able to take photos and a story appeared in the Barrier Daily Truth newspaper the following day.

As a follow up to the successful resolution on Lions Mad Minute (LLM) all clubs wishing to be involved next year are asked to nominate a Lions Mad Minute contact person and provide details to District Coor-dinator Rory McEwen [email protected] Lion Rory is also seeking clubs willing to host the briefing and training sessions in February. These sessions will run by Lion Rory with assistance from Lions who have run the program suc-cessfully for a number of years. The intention is to allocate buddies to work with each nomi-nated Club representative, so you won’t be alone.

Lions Mad Minute Project

By recess time about 40 students had been processed. After a short break, and refreshments supplied by the school, the Lions changed stations and it all began again. Shortly before lunch another Lion, who had been at the training session arrived and was able to operate the camera and other stations for a short time each. By 1pm all of the 80 students

present at school that day had been screened. Follow-ing the screening a debrief explained to the Broken Hill Lions and their co-ordinator what needed to happen with the results and paperwork. Bryan, Kay and Rob headed home at about 1.30pm, via a different route, in time to deliver Rob to his Lions Club meeting by 7pm. What an achievement. Submitted Bryan, Kay and Rob C Districts LEHP Vision Screeners

It is important to the support process to have your nomina-tion and notifications done and dusted by the end of January. Lion Rory will be attending the Aldinga Beach zone meeting next month and is happy to discuss any questions you have regarding the project.

What a great weekend at Lake Cullulleraine with the Lions from Zones 13 & 14 having a get-together and discussion forum. The subject of greatest concern was the drought in the area and the need for water carting for residents in the out-lying areas. The Zone Chairs will collate what is needed for the residents to stay in their area and report back and collate their information for follow-up. Fellowship was the focus of the weekend with everyone enjoy-ing the hospitality of the organising Clubs; Red Cliffs & Renmark. There were around 40 Lions members and partners from the two zones in attendance as well as District Governor Tom Kimber and Lion Jill, along with Past District Governor David Snook and Lion Pam. There was an enormous amount of good fun and comradery over the weekend. Everyone chipped in to help and made for a relaxing week-end. On Saturday night there was time for some yarns and laughs, a raffle, a coin throw for a closest to a bottle and lots of jokes and fines at attendees expense.

Zone 13 & 14

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Clubs around the District are already selling Christmas Raffle Tickets with these ticket sales tables being a great way to also sell out Lions Christmas Cakes. Cakes are just beginning to be delivered to outlets and District Chairperson Tony would love to know where your outlets are. The raffles on offer are many and varied. Broken Hill Lions are continuing their annual car raffle with a semi permanent booth in the local shopping

centre. Lions Club of Mount Gambier are raffling an exquis-ite handmade quilt with all proceeds going to support the Motor Neurone Disease community in SA.

Lions of Millicent have contin-ued to fill their Christmas stock-ing with special treats for the whole family.

Millicent and Naracoorte Lions Clubs both take part in seniors events during the month of October. The Lions Club of Naracoorte hold an annual luncheon where a free 3 course meal for the senior citizens in the Naracoorte Area. This year the attendees were bussed out 50 km to Padthaway which became not only a great lunch but also an enjoyable Sunday Drive. Over 110 Seniors enjoy Pumpkin soup, sausages, burgers and salad main course followed by huge plates of biscuits, slices, buns, cakes, cream puffs and so much more. To accompany the meal, some rather nice wines, and

soft drink and gallons of tea and coffee also helped to wash down the fine fare and accompany the entertain-ment. Meanwhile Millicent’s Wattle Range Council celebrates a full month of Seniors week. During a full month’s pro-gram of activities the Lions Club of Millicent provided catering at multiple events Millicent Lions provided hot donuts at the museum open day, and provided a sausage sizzle at the sen-iors market day. The major function for the club during Seniors Month was the annual BBQ at Lake McIntyre where they provid-ed a hot lunch with salad for the attendees in the beauti-ful waterside wildlife park.

Forming Links—Redding UK and Victor Harbor & Pt Elliot

AGM of Lions Medical Research Foundation

Berri 2020 Calendar

When Reading UK Lions Andy and Mandy found themselves in the Victor Harbor area visiting their children and new family ad-dition, they reached out to the local Club to find out if they were having a meeting during the time that they would be in town. Unfortunately it was the wrong week for the Club, but that didn’t stop them catch-ing up with the UK couple. Members quickly found a lovely local café, called up all their members, to find out who was free and could at-tend, and had a lovely social

get together over coffee and cake, with plenty of chatter. A planned short coffee turned into a long afternoon of chatting and exchanging ideas. The Club members heard about the many and varied projects done by the Red-ding Club, particularly their Guy Fawkes fireworks spec-tacular, while the Redding Lions were amazed at some of the projects undertaken by our local Club, particularly the discussions over school-ies week, and their long run-ning Surf Life Saving Club BBQ partnership.

The SA Lions Medical Research Foundation will hold its AGM at 10.00 am on Wednesday November 27, 2019, at the Italian Club Carrington Street, Adelaide. The Foundation Trustees extend an invitation to all club members to attend. Any members intending to attend are requested to notify the secretary, PDG Bryan Hearn.

The Lions Club of Berri are proud to present the '2020 Images of the Riverland', calendar Alan Dand is the moving force behind the calendar distribution and was recently on local radio telling listeners what a great present this is. He suggests it would be a perfect Christmas present for family who are interstate and overseas. The local images showcases the Riverland's iconic sights

and destinations in a 12 month calendar, and was launched earlier this month with the help of photogra-pher Italo Vardaro. He talked about the locations and the work that went in to capturing these wonderful images. The calendar is available from members of the Berri Lions Club for the cost of $20.00

Criminal History checks. Food for thought

For a number of years I have been a strong advocate in motivating our District’s Clubs to get National Police checks, now more commonly referred to as ‘Working with Vulnerable person checks’ for its members. My catch-cry has been “It is a sign of the times and helps to show we are a transparent, safe and respected organisation” Some clubs and members have sometimes been critical of what they might see as an overbearing and intrusive invasion of their personal privacy and argue that it is an overaction and waste of tax payers money etc etc. These checks on members is not a new thing and this has certainly been highlighted in an article in the Advertiser in 2011 I found whilst fossicking around in my desk recently. This article highlighted the

problem of organisations (not just Lions) in who is a suitable volunteer and who is not and the following examples might suggest that 10 years ago people were getting this wrong; Skinny dipping 50 years ago when the applicant was just 14 years of age = REJECTED Disorderly conduct (no convic-tion) 30 years previously and applicant 11 years old = REJECTED Consensual sex over 50 years ago. The then underage and unmarried couple later married and are still together = REJECTED Fortunately, things have changed for the better and such trivial and historical petty crimes don’t find their way into the process today and we aren’t losing people who go on to be great leaders in their Clubs and the Community.

And finally, a reminder to clubs and members that as of July 2020, all members working/volunteering with Children (and other vulnerable groups) will no longer be able to rely on National Police Certificates after that date. Dave Thomas C2 Leadership Chair

In this technological age Digital Literacy is just as important as the standard 3Rs. A recent donation made by Lioness Club of Millicent to the Wattle Range Council’s, Millicent Library allowed the library to purchase a much want-ed 3D printer. Members convened their September business meeting at the Library and adjacent Council Chambers so that they could see the results of their donation in action. The Club formally handed over their

donation of $2000 , enabling the growth of the technological learning capacity at the library The first test printed object was of course a Lioness, followed by an articu-lated cat and a magnificent Lion. The Club has been promised a coloured one once coloured filament is purchased. How lovely. The money for the donation was raised at the Club’s Second Hand Book Shop, selling books donated by members of the public. . Slightly ironic don’t you think?
