EDUCATIONSUMMIT2014

The Silicon Valley Leadership Group, founded in 1978 by David Packard of Hewlett-Packard, represents nearly 400 of Silicon Valley’s most respected employers on issues, programs and campaigns that affect the economic health and quality of life in Silicon Valley, including energy, transportation, education, housing, health care, tax policies, economic vitality and the environment. Leadership Group members collectively provide nearly one of every three private sector jobs in Silicon Valley. Members operate in locations throughout California and the U.S.

AcknowledgementsThank you for being a part of Education Summit 2014, where business, education, policy, philanthropic and community leaders share and learn about how our Silicon Valley education systems are producing 21st century learners who have the skills needed to thrive in a 21st century workforce.

This year, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group has been deeply engaged in advocating for early education, K-12, higher education and workforce initiatives and our members deeply value this “quality of life” focus we have on improving the educational opportunities our children have here in Silicon Valley.

I deeply appreciate the work of the Planning Committee who helped develop today’s agenda and who also nominated and selected the 2014 Education Leader award receipient: Lorin Alusic (HP), Mike Belcher (HP), Erin Brennock (Synopsys), Elesa Cooperson (Synopsys), John Hiester (Year Up), John Hogan (Teen Force), Nicole Johnson (Blach Construction), Stacy McAfee (University of Phoenix), Kimberly Meek (SAP), John Mummert (Foothill College), Guisselle Nunez (KQED), Nils Sedwick (DeVry), Kris Tueller (Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company) and Kyra Whitten (Lam Research). I also want to thank Stacy McAfee (University of Phoenix) and Ron Sege (Echelon) for their deep support of this Summit.

This Summit is a team effort and I want to especially recognize Carl Guardino, Dennis Cima, Alexandria Felton, Steve Wright, Colin Buckner, Nancy Sánchez, Catharine Wallace and Phyllis Claassen at the Leadership Group and an amazing team of coordinators - Michael Hamamoto, Sasha Foo, Karen Gee, Elizabeth Allen and Bill T. Riker - for their work in developing today’s program and coordinating logistics and social media.

And to you - for all that you do to work with and improve opportunities for Silicon Valley students, teachers, school systems and communities, thank you.

I look forward to continuing today’s conversation and to developing partnerships, pathways and pipelines so that each student in our school system receives a high-quality education, has the skills and experience necessary to thrive in Silicon Valley’s workforce and can be an active participant in our economy and in our community.
