Discipline: Consequences versus Punishments

Punishment: - Does not serve as a learning purpose. Consequences: - Constructive outcome: an end result of a child’s

inappropriate act.

“I can wait” Planned wait time - Students quiet themselves - Students become leaders - Lesson moves at a faster pace “Even though it seems like you are wasting valuable

instruction time waiting for students to be done speaking out of turn. When in fact, planned wait

time will eventually increase the time you have to teach.”

“Notes again? We always take notes in this class!”

Problems I encountered • Students not taking notes

My solution  - More engaging methods of note taking • VoiceThread • ‘Engaging’ PowerPoints • Bring my personality to class

Student Responses

I didn’t get what we went over yesterday and people weren’t talking during your video today so I understood it better.

You’re notes are a little too fast and this went slow enough that I understood.

This wasn’t very helpful because I understood the notes on definite and indefinite articles that we took yesterday

It was cool. It’s nice having something new.

Bring ‘Yourself’ to the Classroom

I am unique and I bring my personality every day to my classroom.

“Mademoiselle Lademan. You’re like, right out of a Harry Potter

book.”

“Miss Lademan… more like Miss

Badaman.”

“I can relate to you. I feel like there are so many teachers I can’t relate to, but you are yourself an that makes me feel more comfortable in class.”

The Big Picture Foreign language study benefits the

generations that will soon be running our more globalized nation.

In order for students to develop foreign language communication skills, they need to be involved in a positive learning community.
