PORTLAND WORKS
PORTLAND WORKSGROUP 3
The building was constructed in the late 1870s as a cutlery works. Three two- to three-storey ranges of brick-built workshops and a range of former offices and showrooms lie around a courtyard containing an octagonal chimney and some more recent structures. The central part of the rear range of workshops was reduced from three to two stories, following a fire. It was occupied for many years by R. F. Mosley, before being split into separate workshops. When first constructed, it was partially mechanised. When surveyed by English Heritage in 1995, it still retained hand forges and a
steam grinding room.
In 1913, Portland Works became the first place in the world to manufacture stainless steel cutlery and this remains, to this day, the site’s main industry. The city of Sheffield in itself is now strongly associated with its steel industry heritage not least in sporting world, with the ice hockey team known as the Sheffield Steelers and one of the local football teams, Sheffield United being nicknamed ‘The Blades’. Bramall Lane, Sheffield United’s football ground, is within walking
distance of Portland Works.
HISTORY
PORTLAND WORKSGROUP 3
In order to work in the most efficient manner we decided to divide the amount of modelling between the
team members.
Each section was chosen to include various opportunities to create a well
detailed study model.
The sections were divided as follows:
TEAM TASKS
REDCHEN
BLUEYUQIN
GREENJIE
YELLOWNICOLE

THIS IMAGE I USED MR AREA SPOT LIGHTS AND CAMERA VIEWS. AS I WANTED TO SEE THE SHADOWS I PLACED THE DETAIL MODEL IN
A SCENE MODELLED WITH WHITE FLOOR AND WALLS.

THE IMPORTANCE THAT PORTLAND WORKS ONCE HAD WHEN IT WAS
BUILT.

PHASE II ‘THE GIFT BALL NETWORK’
Phase II of the project seeks to use the skills and techniques we have learned from modelling the architecture of Portland Works and apply it in a more realistic design scenario.
This collection of images shows the initial ideas for a design intervention that would enhance the space at Portland works.
When searching for precedents as inspiration for my design, I took into consideration how these designs have or could use the software to generate these concepts. For example there are examples of loft surfaces (shown by the aluminium bench at the bottom centre of the collage) and modified meshes (as shown in the domed shelter
above the bench image). From this I have chosen to use differing techniques that are tailored to separate parts of my design.
PORTLAND WORKS
THE GIFT BALL NETWORK
The concept behind the design for Phase II originates from the old fashioned system of money collection in retail shops and
banks.
Money would be placed in ‘cash balls’ that would travel securely around the shop in tubes that
terminated in a safe room.
This design seeks to put the fun back into buying online
by encouraging the recipient to visit the place the gift was
made and receive it in a fun and exiting way.
By designing both the ‘gift orb’ and the ‘tube network’ I hope to show the many techniques I have learned throughout the CAAD course as each element
needs different processes to carry out the model of the
design.
