StephanieAnderson Assistant Director, Alumni Engagement University of Missouri Alumni Association

Today’s graduates may not be inspired to join alumni associations or make general annual donations to the university, but many still want to be a part of the university’s intellectual activity. More interest may come from young alumni to support university entrepreneurs and projects that closely impact them and their community. A “crowdfunding” platform can serve as an easy and painless way to raise money and provide alumni with engagement opportunities. “Crowdfunding” is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising monetary contributions from a large number of people, typically via the internet. The crowdfunding platform can be user-friendly and compelling for young alumni. Stephanie is researching the viability, processes, technology and messaging that could be used to determine the success of crowdfunding platforms for fundraising campaigns.

BrandonBuzbee Executive Director, Industry Engagement and Alumni Outreach University of California, San Diego

Expectations of current students, recent graduates, parents and the Federal Government have shifted in recent years to demand greater accountability and clearer career outcomes associated with a college degree. Little work has been done to identify the role of alumni associations in light of these new realities. Brandon tackled this

issue by researching three primary best practice areas: building and fostering a meaningful network, creating a more robust talent marketplace for students and alumni, and establishing a respected professional development practice.

DavidSchmidt Assistant Director, Regional Engagement Duke University

Many universities have long- standing traditions of alumni involvement in student recruitment. These alumni volunteer programs are partnerships with Admissions and are used to connect prospective students with dedicated alumni volunteers. But how do you know the efforts of your alumni volunteers have made a difference? David investigates a number of associations and their interactions with Admissions, with particular focus on connection and engagement of alumni in supporting the student recruitment process. With the goals at each institution of increasing both the number of qualified students and opportunities for meaningful alumni engagement, David identifies correlations between alumni student recruitment volunteering and student yield numbers.

agendaraise more money through campaigns, there is a need to develop effective strategies for alumni relations to serve as a strategic partner in these major fundraising efforts. Given limited resources, educational institutions need to find ways to leverage all existing resources to meet or exceed campaign goals. This includes strengthening the relationship between alumni and development. This workshop presents 10 major strategies based upon best practice and offers large- and small-group discussion opportunities.
