Welcome to Term 3 Welcome back to another exciting term of Sport at Cabra Dominican College! Training is on as usual for all teams and priority for games is given to those players who train with integrity and consistency throughout the season. The last game for the winter season will be on Saturday 20th August, with the exception of the Primary Netball and Girls Lacrosse Teams. Also this term, winter teams can expect to have their Veritas Team Photo taken and coaches and captains can expect to be busy writing their season overview for the Veritas. More information in regards to the professional team photos will be sent home as details are finalised. The summer pre-season for Cricket, Tennis, Girls Basketball and Volleyball will also commence toward the end of this term. Please note the following changes to winter teams this term: Secondary Girls Soccer Training will be held on Wednesday 3.00pm – 4.15pm for the remainder of the season. 8A Netball Change to draw, game on Saturday 6th August will now commence at 8.10am. Yr 8 Football Mr Mick Gibbie and Mr Steve Kadow are unavailable to coach as of this week. We thank them both for their valuable contributions to the Cabra Football Program and for the time and effort they have voluntarily put into coaching teams at Cabra. Mr Dave Reynolds, Mr Michael O’Dea and Mr Clynton Oakley, with the continued support of Mr Mark Disher, will coach the Year 8 Football team for the remainder of the season. Yr 8B Netball Ms Alicia Ellis is heading overseas as of next week. We wish to thank her for her continued support of the 8B Netball team and umpiring here at Cabra each and every Saturday. This team will be coached by Ms Millsteed, Mrs Smallacombe and Ms Bonnie McGregor for the remainder of the season.

8A Netball Gold Coast Trip Early on the first day of the Term 2 school holidays, (Saturday 9th July) the 8A Netball Team, dressed in matching tour tracksuits, flew out of Adelaide headed for the Gold Coast. Accompanied by Ms Emily Cahalan and myself, the girls were feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. The flight highlight for some was having the opportunity to say hello to Mark Ricciuto, who just so happened to be 10 seats in front of us. Also sharing this flight with us was the Year 10 netball team from Woodcroft College, who were also competing in the Canterbury Netball Carnival on the Gold Coast. Greeted by glorious sunshine in Brisbane, and a quirky bus driver, we boarded a Coach for the Gold Coast. The Mantra Sun City Apartments in Surfers Paradise was our destination that day and where we were to call ‘home’ for the next 10 days. After a marathon grocery shop at Coles, in which we completely filled and purchased four trolleys worth of food for the week, the girls had the opportunity to check out the ‘talent’ at the players meet and greet BBQ that Saturday evening. All Netball and Rugby teams competing in the Canterbury Carnival had the opportunity to mingle, have team photos taken, jump on the jumpy castle and participate in a myriad of other interactive games. Settling into our 23rd and 21st floor deluxe apartments that night, was by no means difficult! Sunday 10th July saw our first round of grading games (four in total) and the Cabra team looked spritely. With new netball body suits, the warmth of the sunshine and the knowledge that we were well placed in this competition gave all, including Coach and Team Manager, an extra bounce in their strides. The second round of grading games took place on Tuesday afternoon and evening, with our last game of the grading period being played at 8.00pm. Despite some strong opposition and three narrow losses out of a total of seven games during the grading period, our bubble had not burst. Wet’n’Wild was the theme park we visited on the Monday, in between the first two days of Netball grading games. Movie World was next on the agenda! It was not until we were out for dinner that Wednesday evening with all four of St Marys College netball teams that the email came through to confirm that Cabra had placed equal top with Camden High School from Sydney, in Pool B after the minor round of grading games. Six teams moved up into Pool A, as they had been undefeated during the minor round of grading games. Nine teams remained in Pool B and six were

moved to Pool C. With renewed excitement about the possibility of a finals placement the girls were determined to play their best Netball whilst away. Thursdays round of games began at 2.00pm, following a shopping excursion to the surf factory outlets. Throughout the evening we played and defeated St Marys College, Junior Jags (Gold Coast), and SCNA. The girls had one draw against the Northern Gold Coast team and despite a wobbly start in the earlier matches of the day our only loss was to Camden High of Sydney that evening. A visit to Sea World the following day (Friday) and signs of exhaustion began to appear. Saturday’s match ups included another game against St Marys College (Adelaide) whom we again convincingly defeated and the Northern Gold Coast, this time producing a win rather than a draw. Once all minor round games had concluded on that final day of games, the wait for the ladder to be posted seemed to take an eternity! Once posted and revealing that our preliminary final opposition was none other than St Marys College (Adelaide), not Camden High School (Sydney) the Cabra team seemed somewhat relieved. Unfortunately, this may have been the undoing of them. Cabra failed to score a goal in the first half against St Marys College and their come back in the second half was not enough to secure a grand final berth. Upon reflection of this particular game and all others that had come before it, the girls decided they could be proud of what they had achieved - third place out of nine teams in Pool B during Cabra’s inaugural trip to the Gold Coast. The team voted Nicola Mathews as their Most Valuable Player and Sophie Karidis received the Barbarian Shirt as the winner of the Spirit of Netball award for the Cabra Dominican College 8A Netball team. The trip was a great success and is currently under review for 2012. Ms Narelle Millsteed, Team Manager

Yr 8 Football Update

We wish to thank Mr Mick Gibbie and Mr Steve Kadow for their contribution towards the Year 8 Football team. Mick and Steve have been great supporters of the Cabra Football Program for the past two and a half seasons and we sincerely thank them both for all of their time and effort. Parent volunteers are a crucial component of our Co-curricular Sport Program and we look forward to seeing them back as Coaches in 2012.


Congratulations

Congratulations to Kate Hofmeyer (10B) for being selected to represent Secondary School Sport SA at the forthcoming School Sport Australia Swimming Championships held in Melbourne from 30th July to 5th August. Well done to Lauren Lante (12Y) for representing South Australia in the U18 Girls Football team recently. She is pictured below in the red SA Guernsey taking a tackle. Congratulations Lauren!

Basketball News The SAPSASA Primary Basketball teams are being finalised in preparation for their competition in Week 2, Term 3. Teams will be coached by Matthew Jarrett and Alex Prior. The following students will be invited to train and participate in this competition. Congratulations must go to Harry Reemst and Erina Marafioti for both making the SAPSASA State Basketball Boys and Girls teams and will represent South Australia at the Interstate SAPSASA Basketball Championships which will be played in Canberra in Week 3, Term 3. Cabra has a history of having previous primary students involved in the SAPSASA Interstate Basketball Championships, and this year we are also the only school to have more than one representative. The Girls team will be competing on Wednesday 3rd August. The Boys team will be competing on Thursday 4th August. If either or both teams are overall winners on their day, they will advance to the Finals round on Thursday 25th August. Good luck to both teams! Football Match Reports Yr 6/7 Football On a wet morning, Cabra stripped back the game plan to the basics - nothing too fancy, just get the ball forward. This proved effective as Cabra dominated the opening exchanges, kicking the first two goals of the match in a wet first quarter. The second quarter was much the same as the first, Cabra's ability to extricate the ball and move it quickly to our forwards proving the difference. After another two goal third quarter, Cabra took a seemingly insurmountable six goal lead into the final break, Sacred Heart having not registered a score. To their credit, Sacred Heart fought on in the last quarter in trying conditions to kick three goals and pull the margin back. Cabra's contested football and willingness to run and work for each other was a real highlight and ultimately proved the difference on a wet day. Our best win for the season, Cabra will head into the holiday break hoping to continue the good form over the second half of the season. Jordan Robertson, Coach

Year 9 Football Our most disappointing result so far this season. After a terrific first quarter start leading by five goals early we gave away a 22 point lead at three quarter time to be defeated by two points. Carter Grieve played an exceptional game with his creative running and sheer hard work. Luke Vaselli won his position from the back pocket by playing in front of his opponent and being prepared to put his head over the ball. Some lapses in concentration and lack of commitment when it counted lead the entire group feeling pretty disappointed post match. With three games to go and a school holiday break we look forward to coming back determined to finish the season on a high. David Fairlie, Coach

First XVIII Football We had a very slow start to the game this week trailing five goals to one at quarter time, and a big uphill battle just to get back in to the game. It was a much better effort and intensity level in the second quarter to get it back to within a goal at half time. We were able to move the ball quickly in the third with some terrific full length of the ground movements to create goals and put us 20 points ahead with one quarter to go. The guys fought as hard as they could in the last quarter and were able to hold on for a thrilling three point win. McDevitt was fantastic through the midfield showing great balance and composure in the congestion. Schaumloffel was outstanding in the ruck and up forward, while Cusack and Galit lead a solid back six. Another great win for the First XVIII making it two in a row and a great way to head in to the school holiday break. Dave Reynolds, Coach Year 8 Football The year 8 team had a tough day out against well drilled Division 1 team St Michael’s College in atrocious conditions. St Michael’s stamped their authority on the game early and the Cabra players, normally assured in their handling and delivery, fumbled and blazed away with hurried disposal. Cabra’s problems were from perceived pressure as much as the obvious physical disadvantage in size and strength. Despite some good individual moments we were largely overwhelmed. When players are finding possessions hard to come by they need to play closer to their opponent and work harder off the ball with tackles, smothers and running to support team mates. The game was a good lesson in persistence. This is the year 8’s last game against Div 1 opposition. After a well earned break for term holidays we look forward to Westminster as a warm up to the vital Dominican Cup game in August. Many thanks to the boys from the year 6/7 team who helped us out. Soccer Match Reports 8A Soccer The boys started the match positively however soon found themselves a goal down after Adelaide scored a fairly gifted goal through a lack of strong defence. Cabra equalised however then found themselves 2-1 down at half time. After half time the boys picked up the pace, physicality and structure. Harry Smyth must be commended for several courageous efforts that left him on the ground but with the ball in our possession. After half time Cabra scored three goals to seemingly put the game beyond doubt at 5-2, however Adelaide made a late charge with two goals with ten minutes to go but the boys held on for a good win. Josh had another great game on the wing and congratulations to Ben Lewis for his hat-trick. Tom Wood, Coach

8B Soccer The boys started off only playing ten men in the rain and the cold, excellent weather for soccer. They were extremely competitive and had a number of shots on goal. At the end of the first half the score was still nil all. In the second half we lost another player so we were then down to nine men on the field. But despite this we came away with the first goal with ten minutes to go. Unfortunately St Ignatius made a comeback very late in the game and scored a couple of goals. The boys played extremely well and I was pleased with the efforts made by the entire team. Ben Linnett, Coach

9B Soccer Good team effort, all played well during different stages in the game. Very challenging game in difficult wet and muddy conditions. The boys challenged Nazareth all day but could not stop a couple of quick goals late in the second half, good effort. NB: Congratulations to the KO Yr 8/9 team for making the final eight, fantastic effort so far. Tony Johnston, Coach

Year 10 Soccer After a shaky first 15 minutes in which we conceded two goals, we managed to get one back and gain some momentum and composure. We were trailing for most of the first half but managed to get the score back to 3-3 at the break. Straight from the start of the second half we were in control; using the ball, playing possession and building up each attack from the backline. Eventually we found ourselves 6-3 up with a few minutes left in which Unley mounted a last final attack and scored a goal. The last few minutes were tense but the boys held out for a good win! Jeremy Podger, Coach First XI Soccer A game played with great spirit and sportsmanship by both teams, enjoyable for the players and spectators with plenty of skill on display in wet and slippery conditions. Cabra was unlucky to equalize on multiple occasions including two shots off the bar, and applying pressure in our scoring half for the majority of the game. When the ball did enter our defensive zone our line was solid, Daniel’s wing was impenetrable and Jordan’s speed ended several dangerous attacks. Sean was dangerous up front with Sebastian deservedly scoring after applying dogged pressure. The Rhys and Michael attack combo came agonizingly close to scoring after swapping into strike mode in the second half. David Kilmartin, Coach

9A vs Mercedes at Mercedes at 8.10am On Friday 1st July the Yr 8/9 KO Netball team headed out to Henley High School for their second round. As it was the second round they played one full game. Right from the start we knew that it was going to be a tough game and Henley proved it, leading Cabra by about 20 goals in the first half. While everyone worked very hard in the first half, Henley got the better of us and our nerves. In the second half the girls were back in business. In the third quarter they played hard and brought the margin back to a more reasonable state. While the likelihood of Cabra beating Henley was not that high in the fourth quarter none of the girls gave up and everyone put in 110%. In the end Henley did win, but it was a great game. Overall everyone played very well and gelled as a team. There were some ‘specky’ shots from the goalies, some fabulous drives from the mid courts, some great intercepts from the defence and always a whole lot of cheering from the bench. Thank you to Ms Cahalan for coaching and thank you to Mr Nicholas for getting us to and from Henley.
