Message from the PRESIDENT & CEO and CABVI BOARD CHAIRWe are honored to bring to you the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired’s 2013 Annual Report.

Our mission is to assist people who are blind or visually impaired to achieve their highest levels of independence. The key word of the mission is independence but the predicate of the mission is to assist – the action that leads people with vision loss to their goal.

In your senior years, independence to some may mean simply living safely at home. For others, independence is defined as meaningful employment or setting out on a career path. Parents of children who are blind or visually impaired wish the world for their kids and seek the tools to help them succeed in school and life – to be able to assert their independence.

None of this could happen without knowledgeable volunteers who provide

guidance and expertise, and have done so remarkably well, for 85 years. It could not happen without generous donors who see the value of supporting our cause. It could not happen without the desire of people with vision loss to live active and productive lives.

It could not happen without dedicated professionals, pulling together as a team, to provide the assistance central to our mission.

And they do it incredibly well.

Like any team, their skills are diverse. That’s what makes CABVI’s professionals so effective at all levels - each individual’s contributions help to complete the whole. Everyone

CABVI - 2013 IN REVIEW

EMPLOYMENT:

National Industries for the Blind (NIB)honored CABVI with the 2013 Employment Growth Award. The award recognizes efforts to increase employment retention, growth and upward mobility for people who are blind. The award acknowledges CABVI for its success and commitment to increasing economic independence for people who are blind.

In 2013, CABVI added 26 employees, 14 of whom are legally blind, to bring its total employment to 221. Of that total employment figure, 97 are legally blind.

CABVI is one of 93 nonprofit agencies across the country associated with NIB, the nation’s largest employment resource for people who are blind.

PROGRAMS:

Camp Abilities-CABVI, a rustic, residential summer camp for children who are blind or visually impaired, started as the kernel of an idea from the fertile minds of CABVI’s vision rehabilitation team.

with a hand in our manufacturing division helps generate revenue so the vision rehabilitation group can provide the deep menu of services to people of all ages with vision loss. The customer service representatives at CABVI’s Utica Contact Center and the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, NY, provide vital services to their constituents. Employees at the Base Supply Centers help our military protect the homeland.Support staff members are the threads that draw everything together… the list goes on.

We are fortunate to lead a team whose members recognize and respect the role of each department, and the abilities they bring to our common endeavor. They truly are the heart and soul of CABVI.

With great pride we present the CABVI team through our 2013 CABVI Annual Report.

“What could a camp for children with visual impairment be with great organization and strong community support?” asked Kathy Beaver, CABVI’s Vice President of Rehabilitation.

With support from the New York Commission for the Blind, the Utica Lions Auxiliary, the Newman Community of SUNYIT and Utica College, CABVI knew it had the formula for a winning camp.

Twenty children, their counselors and staff stayed two nights and three days, August 5-7, 2013, at Camp Nazareth in the Adirondack Park. Five children were day-campers.

Children made s’mores by the camp fire, rode tandem bicycles and kayaks, participated in adaptive sports, learned about adaptive technology and had an overall great time.

In fact, so great, that Camp Abilities-CABVI will be a week-long camp in both summer and winter in 2014 and beyond.

WOMEN’S HEALTH INITIATIVES:

The inaugural CABVI Couture fashion show, June 26, 2013, shined the spotlight on new programs aimed solely for women with vision loss. Proceeds from CABVI Couture funded health and wellness, career planning, self-esteem and self-defense events.
