Install Cachebox! Download the latest cachebox_inst_xxx.cab from

www.getcachebox.net on your device and install the cab by clicking

it using the Explorer.

IMPORTANT: Cachebox! loads maps, data and pictures into the

program directory, so install Cachebox! on SD card or wherever you

have enough space. If your device does not have Microsoft SQL

Server Compact Edition, please install it too.

Little preliminary work Build Pocket Queries on geoaching.com and send it to your email address, in case you want

Cachebox! to check your mails and import the queries

automatically. Naturally you can download the Query

manual and store it into the Pocket Query folder. Also

spider spoiler pictures with spoiler sync and store it in the

Cachebox! directory into a folder called “Spoilers”. Only

the pictures are needed.

Note: please let geocaching.com send your finds and

import it too. This is the same procedure as PQ. It is

necessary to counter your finds.

For example you can use this SpoilerSync

options to spider your spoiler. For

“Waypoint File” choose your GPX file from

geocaching.com or GSAK and tell

SpolierSync where the Cachebox Spoiler

Folder is (/Cachebox/Repository/Spoilers).

Check the options you want and start the

Sync. This can take some time.

The first start Cachebox! starts with the “About” screen. In this screen, you see

your GPS device is working or not, the current time and your

Cachebox! version. If your GPS device is not working, please

configure it manually. See the guide below on how to set up your

GPS device. Note: When Cachebox! receives GPS data on the start it

chooses automatically the nearest cache from your current position.

Set Cachebox! Settings

Before we start, Cachebox! needs some setup. To

configure it, hold the misc button and select the

“setting” tab. Now you can configure Cachebox! as

you want.

On the Map screen, you can set the import and

detail level for the OpenStreetMap /

OpenCycleMap, also the coverage, for example 1km / 2km / 5km.

On the “Data” screen, you have the option to enter your email

account settings for the automatic GPX import of the data which is

mailed to you from

geocaching.com. The option

“Import latest query only” allows

you to import only the last PQ.

When “Delete processed emails” is checked, Cachebox! remove the

mails from geocaching.com in your email box after import.

On the “Cleanup” screen Cachebox! can automatically delete unused

tiles and old logs. With the “Remove Caches” button you can manage

the archived caches. For example if you want to update your cache

database, first select the “Archive Caches” button, then import your

new PQ / GPX and after the import has been done select the “Delete

Archived Cache” button. Now all old / archived Cache will be deleted.

Page 11: Cachebox en Rev073

The GPS screen shows you the device settings to configure you GPS

receiver. Cachebox! uses two GPS drivers. The first one is the NEMA

driver. Baud rate and COM port can be select directly in Cachebox!.

The second one is the Windows intermediate driver. This driver uses

the configuration of your device. COM port and baud rate is

deactivated in Cachebox! by this option. The button “Scan” scans

the two drivers for GPS Data. Cachebox! scans automatically on the first start and set your GPS

receiver, so normally you do not need to configure anything here.

If you select the option “none”, Cachebox! will run only as database. For detailed information of this

option, see chapter “Cachebox! Only as Database”

The “Misc” screen allows you to set four further options. If “Allow

internet access” is checked, Cachebox! downloads from internet “on

the fly” when data is needed. Be careful, there are additional costs

for mobile internet!!! The “Suppress Power Saving” setting

suppresses the power saving functions on your device. (normally

checked). If your device has a hardware keypad, uncheck this option.

If you want to use the GCVote function, it is recommend the set your Geocaching nickname at the

“Login at geocaching.com”

Import GPX (from Email) / Description Image / OSM / OCM-MAPS / GCvotes

First of all we need GPX files from geocaching.com, opencaching.de

or GSAK. If you have setup your email accounts settings, Cachebox!

will automatically import the GPX from the geocaching.com mails.

Alternatively you can store the GPX files from geocaching.com,

opencaching or GSAK manually in the “Pocket Query” folder from

Cachebox! Additionally you need to store the Cache Spoiler into the

“Spoilers” folder. If done, start Cachebox!

When Cachebox is loaded, hold the

“Misc” button and select the “Import”

tab. Now choose your options.

Cachebox! fetches all data from the

internet and imports cache votes, GPX,

maps / description images and, if checked, your geocaching.com mails

and stores it locally in the program directory.

Note: This procedure can take some time.

Page 12: Cachebox en Rev073

12

Import GPX from Opencaching.de

After your login at opencaching.de click on “Cache” at the top menu. This will open up the search. You can search geocaches by various criteria, for example the nearest caches of a place, ZIP code or coordinates. Enter the coordinates

and a radius in which the caches are displayed. Then click on "search". When the search has finished, a list of geocaches matching your entered criteria will be displayed. (in this example 225 geocaches).

To export this into a GPX file, scroll down completely. On the side you will find the entry "Download as a GPX file". Download all entries. When done, copy the GPX file to the Cachebox Pocket Query directory. Start Cachebox

and “Import” the GPX. That’s all. Note: You do not have to start the search by hand all the time as you can also store the search. Click at the beginning of the list on "save", enter the name of the search store it. You find the stored search in your profile.

The Cachebox! Map Pack Linker After installing the Map Pack Linker, start the program by double clicking the icon. On the “Bounding

Box” you can choose

your min. / max.

latitude / longitude. The

section “Layers” allow

you to change the layer,

min. / max. zoom level

and the age of the tile.

With “Pick” you can choose your coordinates by clicking on the map. On Section “Target file” you can rename the filename (OSM / OCM). Finally

the button “Generate” starts the download. After downloading all the tiles, Map Pack Linker generates a "*.pack" file. The file is stored in the Map Pack Linker install folder. Copy this file to the device (/Cachebox/Repository/Maps). When a cache is outside the “Map Pack” generated file, Cachebox! imports the necessary tile. To do this, chose “Map” on the “Import” screen. To update your map, start the Linker again, chose your “Cache Directory” and start with “Generate”. Note: you can store different packs on /Cachebox/Repository/Maps. Cachebox handles this.

13

Display coordinates and GC Code After a cache is selected you can find the cache GC code and

the waypoint coordinates in the about screen by clicking the misc tab.

Compass, Radar and Map (OSM / OCM) These three entries can be found in the “Nav”

Button. In the map screen, you can see your

current position (the red arrow). To zoom the

map, click on the +/- buttons. Click the “Pos”

Button to show your current position and

centre the map. On the last few meters, the

“Compass” function can be used. It shows your

current speed, distance to the Cache and

bearing. The “Radar” function shows you the

zero point for the selected waypoint / coords.

The “Layer Tab” allow you to switch between

OpenStreetMap and OpenCycleMap if

available.

Map Marker With the marker function you can manually set your current position on the map.

Cachebox will sort all stored Caches from here by distance. The “Marker” tab shows you

four options. “Set” sets the marker as a red point on the Map. “Remove” will remove the

point. With “Find” Cachebox centers the map to the point and the “Goto” function will

show you the right way to the point (e.g. by compass or radar)

GCVote / Hide Finds With GCVote you can see the cache votes in the map

screen and the cache list. Also it is possible to vote

for a cache. If you have found a great cache, use the

“Field Notes” in the “Find” tab. Now you can set you

vote. If you have “Allow internet access” Cachebox

sends your vote on the fly. If not it will be done with

the next import of data. With “Hide Finds”

Cachebox hide your founds on the map.

Page 14: Cachebox en Rev073

14

The Toolbox The “Toolbox” includes nice features, for example camera / video functions or a track

recorder. If you device has an integrated camera, you can select it and take some

photos like a photolog or panorama of a beautiful view also video function is possible!

It is store with the cache name and time in the directory “Photos” / “Video”.. With the

“Track recorder” Cachebox is logging your track and stores it in the program directory

as a gpx file including date and time. The Toolbox is constantly expanding.

Use Spoiler pictures and Hint decoder First of all you have to spider the spoilers with “SpoilerSync” and

store the pictures in a folder called “Spoilers” in the program

directory. Otherwise the Cachebox! spoiler button is disabled. If

there is no spoiler for this Cache Cachebox! disables the button

too. To use spoiler pictures select a Cache and hold the button

“Find”. Now select the spoiler entry and confirm the “really search”

question. With a double click the picture can be zoomed.

Cachebox! Lists all the spoilers in “Spoilers” folder, which also

belongs to the respective cache. To close the spoiler, select any button, for

example, the “Cache” button. If a hint is available for the selected cache, go to

the “Hint” entry in the same button group and confirm the “decode” button.

That’s all.

Adding Waypoints To add new waypoints, hold the "Add Waypoint"

entry for less than one second. For selection, you

can input the coordinates in decimal/degrees,

degree/min or degrees/min/sec. After this, you can

enter the coordinates and confirm with OK. Cachebox has

now saved the waypoint. The waypoint can also be

processed further, for example with waypoint projection.

See the next Chapter for more information.

Page 15: Cachebox en Rev073

30/06/2009 Rev. 073 Autor: Geo-Hanslik / Bender2004

15

Waypoint Projection Waypoints can also be projected. To do this select a waypoint and

click it for a few seconds. A new menu will open where you can

enter meters and degrees. Cachebox! sets a extra waypoint with

the projected coordinates. You can see the projected coordinates

in the “About” screen.

Search option Cachebox! has some search option. You can search caches by name,

GC Code or owner.

Measurement option With this option is it possible to receive accurate

position coords in order to hide your own cache.

Cachebox! saves the average of the current GPS

position as an Waypoint.

Work with Field Notes When a cache was found, you can quickly submit “Field

Notes”, for example “Found it / Didn´t Found it”. After a

Cache run, a Garmin - conformal field note is stored by

Cachebox! in the program directory and can be uploaded to

geocaching.com. Submit the geocache_visit.txt on

geoaching.com and log your finds.

Remove Caches from Database To remove caches from the database you have

three options. Go to the cachelist and select

one cache, Then go to the “Misc” button and

enter the “Settings” menu. In the “Cleanup”

screen you can now delete the selected cache.

You can also delete all caches from this screen. The third option is to

import new GPX files, then Cachebox! will remove the caches on the next data import.

Page 16: Cachebox en Rev073

16

Cachebox! Only as Database To run Cachebox! as cache database only, you have to set your GPS

Settings to “none”. Now Cachebox! works only as database.

Note: when Cachebox! runs as database, functions like radar,

automatically set the next nearest cache, compass etc. will not

work. The map view can be used, but with the restriction that the current position is not displayed.

Tip: You can set the marker manual.

Lets go Geocaching This is a short “Tradi” example on how to work with Cachebox!

Start Cachebox! and wait for GPS data. Cachebox! shows you the nearest cache from your current

position. You can also select a different one manually. Check the map to see the cache position on

the OpenStreetMap. You can also select a cache from the map by double clicking the cache symbol.

Read the cache description first. Now go to the cache area using the map. On the parking area,

switch the screen to the compass sight and find the cache! On the last few meters, you can use

spoiler pictures and / or the Hint if available. If the cache

was found you can enter a field note, for example “Found

it” and rate this cache. Cachebox! stores your found with

date / time and cache number in the geocache_visit.txt.

That’s all.

At the end of your cacherun, connect your device / storage

card to your PC and upload the geocache_visit.txt, witch can

be found in the Cachebox! directory, to

http://www.geocaching.com/my/uploadfieldnotes.aspx. Now you can log your finds.

For a “Multi” cache it is the same procedure as the “Tradi” example.

You can select stage for stage in the “Waypoint” entry which can be

found via the “Cache” button. Each waypoint's code and coordinates

are displayed in the about screen. Adding and projecting waypoints

can be done in the waypoint entry. See the chapter “Adding

Waypoint or Waypoint Projection” for more details.

For “Mysteries Caches” where the coordinates are unknown, you

can solve them at home and add a new waypoint to the fake coords

with the solved coordinates.

FAQ / Troubleshooting / Where can I find…

Missing installation of Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition

The most common problem experienced with running cachebox is a missing installation of SQL Server

Compact Edition 3. This usually comes with Windows Mobile, but on some devices it somehow

doesn't. If you struggle this issue try downloading this cab and install it ON YOUR DEVICE, not on a

your storage card! I am not an expert with deploying WM-applications, so if you know a nicer way to

do so, please let me know.

No internet connectivity using Active Sync

If you do not have a WLAN-capable device you probably want to connect it to the internet with Active Sync. There is a known issue with some versions of this software. The following solutions worked with two of my three devices:

Open a registry editor (you do not have one take this) and add the following registry entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\AllowLSP

Let this be a DWORD with a value of 0. Exit the registry editor and try again
