INTRODUCTION TO JROTC: A CHARACTER and LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Reserve Officer Training Corps was established by the National Defense Act of 1916.The key to success in JROTC is Teamwork.The 2 ways to become a US Citizen are: BirthandNaturalization (14th amendment – 1868).The 3 parts of US Constitution: 1 Preamble, 7 Articles,and 27 Amendments.The first 10 amendments of the Constitution are known as the Bill of Rights.Freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment are: Religion, Assembly, Press, Petition,andSpeech.The 3 standard US flags are: Garrison (ceremonial), post (daily), andstorm (bad weather).The Star-Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key during War of 1812 (adopted 1931).Basic citizen responsibilities: Obey laws, pay taxes, attend school, and vote.

LEADERSHIP THEORY and APPLICATION

The 2 basic responsibilities of a leader are: Missionand People.The 3 styles of leadership are: Directing, Participating,andDelegating.The 7 values that leaders and followers possess are: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity,and personal courage (LDRSHIP).Management is the process of planning, organizing, coordinating, directing,andcontrolling resources such as people, material, time, and money in order to accomplish a mission.Attributes of a leader are: Be (Values), Know (Skills), andDo (Actions).

The 11 Principles of Leadership are:1. Know yourself and seek self-improvement.2. Be technically and tactically proficient.3. Know your subordinates and look out for their welfare.4. Keep your subordinates informed.5. Set the example.6. Ensure the task is understood, supervised, and accomplished.7. Train your subordinates as a team.8. Make sound and timely decisions.9. Develop a sense of responsibility among your subordinates.10. Employ your command in accordance with its capabilities.11. Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions.

Application of Leadership in Drill

Drill is covered in Field Manual (FM) 3-21.5 Drill and Ceremonies.Drill develops: Discipline, self-confidence, teamwork, personal pride, unit pride, andorganization.Most drill commands have 2 parts: Preparatory command (what) andcommand of execution (when).Drill commands have 3 important components: Tone, cadence,and snap.The rates of march are: Quick time = 120 steps per minuteanddouble time = 180 steps per minute.The 4 positions of rest are: Parade Rest, Stand At Ease, At Ease,and Rest.The 2 basic unit drill formations are: Line (side-by-side)and column (one-behind-the-other).

FOUNDATIONS FOR SUCCESS

Winning Colors ® groups human behavior into 4 categories:1. Brown – Builder Behavior (Decider)2. Green – Planner Behavior (Thinker)3. Blue – Relater Behavior ( Feeler)4. Red – Adventure Behavior (Actor)

The 7 Communication Skills are: Read, listen, think, study, write, remember, andspeak.The 4-phase lesson plan consists of: Inquire, gather, plan, andapply.The 3 types of teaching methods are: Lecture, conference, anddemonstration.SQ3R – A reading/study system: Survey, question, read, recite, andreview.The 8 Multiple Intelligences are: Bodily/kinesthetic, visual/spatial, logical/mathematical, verbal/linguistic, naturalist, musical/rhythmical, interpersonal, andintrapersonal.The 3 parts of the Triune Brain are: R-Complex, Limbic System, andNeoCortex.Whole Brain Activation is when the NeoCortex takes over the brain and is caused by positive, esteem-building stimuli.Downshifting is when the R-Complex takes over and is caused by fear, threats, and other intimidating stimuli.The left side of the brain controls analytical/logical thought and the right side controls creative thought.The 2 types of learning are: Route and map.The 8 Thinking Maps (graphic organizers) are:

1. Circle - Defining something in context.2. Bubble - Describing something using only adjectives.3. Double-Bubble - Comparing and Contrasting 2 or more things.4. Tree - Classifying information/things in a hierarchical manner (battalion organization chart).5. Brace - Parts and Subparts of a Whole, physical object (cadet uniform).6. Flow - Sequencing events in chronological order (history, recipes, assembly/disassembly).7. Multi-Flow - Cause and Effect of an event (car accident, heat stroke, drill team championship).8. Bridge - Showing Analogy between things, events, etc.

WELLNESS, FITNESS & FIRST AID

The 4 types of exercise are: Aerobic, anaerobic, isometric, and isotonic.The 3 steps of any exercise are: Warm-Up, Conditioning (Exercise) and Cool DownThe 6 nutrients for the human body are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals&waterThe 2 types of carbohydrates are: Simple carbohydrates (sugars) and Complex carbohydrates (starches)The 4 life-saving steps are:

1. Check and clear Airway and restore breathing.2. Check for and stop Bleeding.3. C heck for and treat shock.4. D ress and bandage the wound.

CPR stands for CardioPulmonary Resuscitation and is used to restore heartbeat and breathing.The Heimlich Maneuveris used to clear a blocked airway.The 3 types of heat injuries are: Heat cramps, Heat exhaustion, and Heat stroke.The 2 types of bone fractures are: Closed and Open.Alcohol is the most widely consumed drug in the U.S.90% of teenage auto accidents involve alcohol.70% of teenage suicides involve alcoholBAC stands for Blood Alcohol ConcentrationLoss of memory is the worse symptom produced by Rohypnol (roofie), the date-rape drugMethamphetamines (Meth, Crystal Meth, Ice, Crank) can cause addiction after the first use

GEOGRAPHY & EARTH SCIENCE

A topographic map is a line drawing to scale of a portion of the earth’s surface as seen from above.The rule for reading a map is to read right then up.A protractor is used to determine a grid azimuth (direction) on a map.A magnetic compass is used to determine a magnetic azimuth in the field.The 5 major terrain features are: Hill, saddle, ridge, valley, and depression.The 3 norths on a map are: True, magnetic, and grid.The 5 basic colors on a map are: Blue (water), green (vegetation), brown (contour, elevation, and shape), black (manmade objects), and red (roads, other manmade objects, and densely populated areas).Longitude/Meridian/Vertical (up and down) – lines that intersect at the top and bottom of a globe (example: The Prime Meridian).Latitude/Parallel/horizontal (side to side) – lines that do not intersect (example: Equator).The 7 continents are: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.The 4 oceans are: Arctic, Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific.
