Summer is a time when lots of people catch up on their reading.

I know this is true because CADL circulates some 760,000 items

between mid-June and the end of August. That’s nearly 30% of

our total circulation for the year!

Many of those items are checked out to kids and teens. I’m proud

of the role CADL plays in keeping them engaged in reading during

the summer.

Research shows that when they don’t read while school is out, they

risk losing essential literacy skills. That can have a long-lasting effect

on school success and beyond.

Each year thousands of kids and teens sign up for our reading

incentive program. We have separate tracks for pre-readers, kids and teens,

all offering cool prizes just for reading and doing fun, reading-related activities. And it’s all free!

CADL is able to offer high-quality programs like this because voters in Ingham County continue to

support our millage, which provides almost 90% of our funding. On Aug. 5, we will be asking voters

to renew that millage at its current rate. For more information, please visit cadl.org/renewal.

Speaking of events, this guide features a variety of them, all waiting for you and your family

at our branches. We have tons of hands-on science programs, plus magicians, live animals,

concerts, movies and more!

Director Maureen Hirten

From the director

This year many of our summer events are connected to STEM subject areas (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Our STEM-centered events

encourage kids to design, experiment, challenge and create!
