A MESSAGE FroM NorMAN GrAYThe Centre for Adult Education (CAE) is once again making sure your autumn is full of inspiration with an array of interesting short courses. Each course has been designed to enrich the lives of Melbournians, and provide new skills for work and life.

CAE is proudly Victoria’s largest provider of adult education. Since 1947, we’ve been helping people from all walks of life to expand their minds through our vast array of short courses, VCE/VCAL and accredited certificates and diplomas.

A perennial favourite at the CAE is our series of Melbourne walking tours, so rug up and enjoy the crisp autumn air as you take in the intriguing tales of Melbourne’s bygone eras. If you prefer the history of lands from afar, we also have a range of new talks and courses covering antiquity from the Gothic Shrines in Paris and the Ille‑De‑France, to Orientalist Art and America before Columbus.

If you’re more inclined to turn your mind to hibernating at home for the winter, you can always try your hand at some improvements in the cooler months, with new courses in landscape design, basic home maintenance and de‑cluttering techniques available to get you started this season.

While the quirky and seasonally popular courses come and go, CAE maintains its commitment to keeping those elementary learning activities available, including 23 languages, fine arts, beginner and intermediate level sewing, craft, dance, cooking and fitness classes. We also offer our regular suite of professional development courses including soft skills such as negotiation and public speaking, through to short courses covering all you need to know in basic computing and IT.

Whether you want to learn it, sew it, make it, cook it, see it, walk it, speak it or do it, you’ll be sure to find a course to suit you at the CAE. Remember all courses are all filled on a first‑come first served basis so make sure you enrol early so you don’t miss out.

We look forward to seeing you at the CAE this autumn.

A MESSAGE FroM thE MINIStEr For trAINING AND SkILLS Welcome to the CAE Autumn 2015 Guide.

Our government is committed to ensuring that Victoria’s education system is the best in the country. High quality training and retraining is more important than ever before to Victoria’s future job growth. We are committed to providing genuinely accessible, high‑quality education and training opportunities to all school leavers and adults across Victoria. Creating training opportunities for people to develop vocational skills, particularly within high‑growth industries of the future, is critical to the growth of our economy. Our Back to Work Plan includes a commitment to create 100,000 jobs over the next four years. The adult education sector plays an important role in supporting workers access training so they can take advantage of new job opportunities. One of the ways we’re making Victoria the Education State is by strengthening our Learn Local adult education sector.

Learn Local organisations provide accessible training opportunities to people within their local communities. They specialise in reaching out and engaging people who are facing barriers to education and training, providing education opportunities for some of our most vulnerable citizens and offering them a stepping stone to new education and job opportunities.

Lean Local organisations give people the skills they need for employment, and pathways to further education. These organisations are also social hubs for the community, providing life skills which complement a learner’s formal training and extra support for the most disadvantaged in our community. As one of the 300 plus Learn Local adult education providers in Victoria, the CAE offers the welcoming environment many people need to build confidence, improve their literacy and numeracy and re‑skill.

CAE has a vital role in further education and ensuring people from all walks of life and all age groups have opportunities to learn and succeed. As one of the state’s largest adult education providers, CAE’s services to the people of Melbourne – both in the CBD and in other locations – are contributing to the strength of the Learn Local sector and are a significant element of Victoria’s workforce development.

CAE provides its diverse range of courses year‑round. I encourage you to take a minute to see if there is a course available that will help you develop new skills and take up new opportunities.

the hon. Steve herbert, MP Minister for training and Skills
