MAYOR’S WELCOME
Welcome to the 56th Cairns Festival.
The Cairns Region with its unique natural environment and vibrant community has a lot to celebrate. This year’s Cairns Festival features a range of free and ticketed events across the city and into the suburbs so everyone has a chance to dance, sing, create, listen, learn and be part of the region’s biggest annual party.
As always the Grand Parade on the opening weekend is the hallmark event of the Festival and provides the perfect opportunity for all to be involved in the celebrations. This year’s theme, ‘Shine’, will no doubt encourage some spectacular decorations from our parade floats, creating a magnificent display made by and for the Cairns community.
In addition to annual favourites Carnival on Collins and Sunday on the ‘Nard, this year’s Festival truly shines a light on Cairns with the introduction of The Making Place, a dedicated free performance and workshop space where local talents can thrive. City Lights will explore a new story from the region and celebrate our unique sense of place through another large-scale, three dimensional projection on the Cairns City Library. The wonderful Circa returns with another internationally acclaimed show presented in beautiful Munro Martin Parklands.
There are many more events on offer throughout the 10 days of the 56th annual Cairns Festival and I encourage you all to get involved. Festival is the annual highlight of our cultural calendar and joins with major developments across the city bringing us closer to our goal of becoming the Arts and Cultural Capital of Northern Australia.

RESONANCEA natural frequency, a vibration determined by the physical experience of living on country. This work is a visual response to country, to the land that has formed and nurtured these three proud women of Yarrabah – Edna Ambrym, Philomena Yeatman and Valmai Pollard.
Resonance is a collaboration between Yarrabah Art Centre and projection specialists AGB Events. The work invites the viewer to witness the emotional response these women have to living on country, which remains the dominant inspiration source informing their art practice over many years.
The Yarrabah Arts Precinct is made up of the Art Centre and Menmuny Museum. The Art Centre is a dynamic space for local artists to undertake many local art forms and cultural activities including ceramics, painting, weaving, arts and craft and textiles.
AGB Events are specialists in creating public celebrations, innovative experiences and 3D artworks that are responsive to place, audiences, local stories and culture.

TROPPO BY CIRCACreated by Yaron Lifschitz with the Circa Ensemble
On a deserted island far, far away a rag tag circus troupe is washed up on a beach. Dazed and unfamiliar with their colourful new world they venture into the island. Will they make it off or will the tropical, warm climate make them all go a little... ‘troppo’?
In this ‘Alice in Wonderland’ meets ‘The Tempest’ action-packed new show, Circa invites you into their daring new acrobatic world... Colourful and energetic, funny yet insightful, Troppo is full of wonder, comic misadventures and circus, mixed together like a good cocktail – with a dash of panache and the desire to please. An explosively fun beach party the whole family will enjoy.
Circa acknowledges the assistance of the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body and the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Ministry for the Arts’ Catalyst—Australian Arts and Culture Fund.
