CAIT ( CDMA Air Interface Tester ) CAIT ( CDMA Air Interface Tester )
CDMA Air Interface Tester (CAIT) is a tool that can test and analyze
the information of MS.
It can be used to observe, collect and analyze the MS status,
network parameters and messages. It can run on a PC and can be
connected to the CDMA MS through serial port, dual-serial-port card
or USB port. CAIT provides the follow functions:
Assessing network conditions
Statistics of call performance
Recording air interface message
Obtaining the location information from GPS
Assessing the performance of air interface

CAIT can communicate with the COM interface at the rate of 19.2kbps,
38.4kbps, 57.6kbps, 115.2kbps respectively and supports MS based
on Qualcomm chip or software. Unlike other drive test tools, it does not
need to select specific MS types.

Baud rates to search: Generally it is set to 115200. The value shall be the same as the rate set in the MS. It should also be the same as the rate set by the “SET MOBILE BAUD RATE” under the CAIT OPTIONS menu.
FORCE BAUD RATE: Generally it is set to “DO NOT FORCE”. Thus, the CAIT will automatically select a rate that can be used to communicate with the MS. Or a specific rate can be selected for communication to reduce the time for the CAIT to search the MS.
PHONE LINK ALARM: It is used to set whether alarm windows prompt and voice prompt will be generated when connection fault occurs during the test of the mobile phone.

This drop-down list lets you select whether to use oroverride the Over-the-Air PILOT_INC valuecontained in the IS-95A or J-STD-008 ExtendedNeighbor List. Select Normal - OTA to use this value. To override it and use instead the increment valuespecified in the Pilot Increment Value box, selectOverridden. Generally, “Normal-OTA” is selected.
On: Enables the Retriever mode.Off: Retriever functionality not used.
When the Pilot Increment Mode value is set toOverridden, this field lets you specify the INCRparameter setting of the Retriever phone. Possiblevalues are 1 through 15.
This box lets you to set the size of search windows.Select 64 * Pilot_Increment to use the default modeof Incr*64 (WIN_SIZ=0). Select Normal - OTA Valueto use the WinN mode (WIN_SIZ=1). SelectOverridden to use the search window size specifiedin the Search Window Size box (WIN_SIZ=2...512).Generally, “64*Pilot_increment” is selected.

Configuring RetrieverConfiguring Retriever
This box lets you select which of the Retrieverphone’s HO_TYP parameter settings to use todetermine how the Retriever phone maintains thechannel while scanning PNs.Select Normal - Neighbors Only to use the default setting of HO_TYP=0 and maintain the channel aswould a normal, operational phone. Select Any Pilotto allow idle handoffs to all pilots regardless ofwhether they are Neighbors (HO_TYP=1). SelectHandoffs Suppressed to suppress idle handoffsentirely (HO_TYP=2). Generally, “Normal-NeighborOnly” is selected.
This box lets you select which of the Retriever phone’s LOG_FMT parameter settings to use to control how the Retriever phone packages data for remote logging. Select Dense Pack Mode (LOG_FMT=0) to use the default, ondensed-searcher packet format, which allows logging of every search. Select Standard Searcher Mode (LOG_FMT=1) for interfacing with QUALCOMM’s and other vendors’ test gear, displays, and analysis tools that cannot use the denser packets.
When the Log Packet Format value is set to Standard Searcher Mode, this box can help overcome the link bandwidth limitations of older test tools by letting you set the energy threshold below which search scans are not logged, to limit the data collected to that which is most interesting. This value specifies the Retriever phone’s LOG_THR parameter settings to set that threshold.0

Configuring RetrieverConfiguring Retriever
This drop-down list lets you override the default
Over-the-Air system parameters with those that you
specify on this tab. Parameters that can be
overridden include handoff parameters, search

Select Normal - OTA Values to use the default
system parameters. Select Overridden to use the
values specified in the other boxes on this tab. All
OTA defaults will be replaced with values specified
here; be sure to specify complementary values for all
parameters.
Once these settings are applied, the Retriever phone
uses them for all search and handoff operations in
Sync, Idle, and Traffic states until the Retriever
phone is power-cycled.

bandwidth occupancy, internal delay, total duration of CAIT test with second as the unit, the
number of packets with CRC error received by CAIT as well as the number of packets
transmitted by CAIT for which no response is obtained. Besides, it can be set to adopt the

The transmission quality at each frame rate appears in the Markov Statistics window. The window also gives various combinations of dim and burst rate signaling statistics for Markov-originated calls in cell or subscriber station traffic channels. Markov statistics are used to determine the frame error rate (FER) of the system. The FER is used to approximate the voice quality of calls.

DT Data AnalysisDT Data Analysis
When the collection of data is finished through the CAIT drive test software, th
e test data need be analyzed at the background. Unlike other drive test softwa
res, CAIT has no dedicated or recommended background analysis tool. At pre
sent, the data collected by CAIT can be processed in three ways:
(1) Converting the data into text format
(2) Processing the data with OPAS32 of ANGILENT
(3) Converting the data with ACTIX

Security Level: Internal
49
Converting data into test format Converting data into test format
Processing procedures: Use the batch processing program NPAR.EXE to
convert the data collected by CAIT into TXT file and then open the file by
ULTRAEDIT. This method is suitable for viewing some signalings and for s
ignaling analysis.
1. Copy NPAR.EXE to the CAIT-collected data directory.
2. Create a TXT file. Write the NPAR file name> filename.TXT in the file.
(The file name above refers to the name of the file to be converted.) Then sav
e the TXT file as a .BAT file.
3. Run the BAT file. In this case the TXT file will be converted out.
4. Use ULTREDIT to open the file. Then the file can be edited and used for sig
naling analysis.

Processing the data with OPAS32 of ANGILENTProcessing the data with OPAS32 of ANGILENT
Though the first method can be used to convert the data, it is difficult for d
ata statistics and is particularly inconvenient for the statistics of Ec/Io, TX
and RX data. However, when OPAS32 is used for processing the data, no
background dongle is required, which facilitates the use. Besides, distribut
ion graph can be output. At present, however, OPAS32 product does not
support the analysis of data service data. Moreover, it is known that the d
evelopment of the product is stopped at present. Therefore, its function is
limited and it only supports the analysis of voice service.

51
Processing the data with OPAS32 of ANGILENTProcessing the data with OPAS32 of ANGILENT
Precautions for OPAS32 conversion:
1. Generally OPAS32 supports the conversion method where one piece
of data is collected in every 1000ms. Therefore, before the conversion, a
display layer shall be defined by the user and its display duration shall
be set to collect one piece of data in every 20ms.
2. The form of time display should better be changed into HH:MM:SS:
SSSS.

Security Level: Internal
52
Converting the data with ACTIX Converting the data with ACTIX
The background conversion tool ACTIX supports the conversion of
Qualcomm data and features good effect. Its advantage lies in its ability
to analyze both voice service and data service and output test analysis
graph, while the disadvantage lies in its requirement for a dongle and its
high price. For new service functions, fees for upgrade are required and
the technical support is provided according to the ID of the dongle. Once
the ID has expired, the service will no longer be provided.
