Safety Procedures Before reading this Application Note, please refer to the section on Safety Procedures in the Barak User's Manual.

About this Application Note This Application Note describes how to generate an ICC profile with Caldera's 'Easy Media' module.

For more details about profiling with Easy Media, please refer to Caldera's documentation.

About the Easy Media Module You can use any suitable measuring device that 'Easy Media' supports. In this document, an ICC profile was created using an ' 'i1' measuring device.

Using the Module 1. Open Easy Media, choose the device you want to calibrate

(printer) and click NEXT.

The following window appears.

2. For a new media, click NEW.

3. Enter the password (caldera) and click OK.

The following dialog box appears.

4. In the NAME field of the MAIN SETTINGS tab, enter a name for the new media and click OK.

The EasyMedia appears again with the name of the new media appearing at the end of the list.

5. Double-click the new media.

The following dialog box appears.

6. Choose the mode (CMYK) and the resolution (in this case: Supreme) from the drop down menus for this project.

7. Click OK.

8. After creating the new media, you will see the STATUS tab (as shown below). It will be empty, because the media is new.

9. Click NEXT.

The LINEARIZATION tab appears.

10. Choose the CREATE NEW LINEARIZATION CURVE and the RUN WIZARD options as shown below.

11. Select the 'CMYK target, 5% step, with composite patches' target which is compatible with an 'i1'device.

Make sure the PRINT and MEASURE is checked and click NEXT.

12. Make sure that all the parameters are as shown below, and click PRINT to create the target file for printing.

13. Print the target on your Barak printer, and cut it in order to measure it.

14. Click NEXT.

15. Click START to begin the measurement.

You will be asked to measure the white tile of the 'i1' device, as shown in the following figure.

16. After measuring the white tile, scan the strips of all 4 colors, from 0%-100% or from 100%-0%.

If you cannot scan a certain strip, you can check the PATCH option and scan patch by patch.

17. Restrict the ink by clicking AUTO (marked "A" in the following figure), this way, unnecessary ink will not be used. Using the 'auto' option will restrict the ink at 99% output. It is possible to restrict the ink manually to other values (like the cyan in this example).

(In general, 1-2 pass modes the density restriction is minimal while in 4-8 passes modes the limit is higher.)

CAPTURE

18. Click NEXT.

The Linearization Curve graph window appears.

You can perform some manual fine tuning to each point on the graph in order to obtain a smooth curve.

This is the end of the linearization process and these are the parameters that will be saved in the linearization curve file.

19. Click NEXT.

The first option is mainly used in solvent/dye printers.

Alternatively, you can choose the second option (recommended,) which is the ink limiting step.

20. Check the NO, SKIP TO THE NEXT STEP option and click NEXT.

21. The next step is determining the total ink limit. This is done only by visual observation.

Open the INK LIMIT tab and choose the SETUP A NEW INK LIMIT and RUN WIZARD options.

22. Click NEXT.

The following dialog box appears.

23. In the INK LIMIT TARGET field, choose the target you want to use,

SIMPLE TARGET, RANGE 150%-400% and click NEXT.

24. Print the ink limit target according to the following parameters, make sure the scale is at least 200% so it is easy to see differences between patches.

25. Print the INK LIMIT TARGET and decide your ink limit by moving the slider or just by entering the value (in this case 240% total ink). Make sure PRESERVE BLACK INK is checked and click NEXT to finish the ink limit procedure.

You have the option to print a test target or skip to the next step.

26. Select the CREATE A NEW ICC PROFILE and RUN WIZARD options and click NEXT.

27. Open the PROFILING tab and choose your profiling target from the list – i1 TARGET, 320 PATCHES.

Ensure that the PRINT AND MEASURE TARGET option is checked, then click NEXT.

28. Make sure the scale is 100% and all other parameters are as shown below. Then click PRINT.

29. Print the target on your Barak printer, and cut it so that you can measure it.

30. Click START to begin measuring.

You will be asked to measure the white tile of the 'i1' (as in the linearization).

31. Scan the target strip by strip again.

You can also scan patch by patch, by checking the PATCH box.

32. After scanning the target, click NEXT to go to the next screen.

This is where you set the profile building method – such as profile file size, rendering method, Gamut mapping and viewing light source. These are the parameters recommended by Matan.

33. You now have to set the black point parameters.

You have the option of choosing black start point, max black, separation method etc. Again, these are Matan's recommended parameters:

34. To generate the profile, click NEXT. This process might take a few minutes.

35. After building the profile, Easy Media will show you some

statistics about the profile generated like CREATION DATE, WHITE and DARK POINT LAB values.

Most important are the SELF GAMUT (which should give a value of less than ΔΕ 2.0) and GAMUT/SWOP (which should give a value of less than ΔΕ 5.0).

Again, you have the option to print a test target or skip to the next step.

36. Go to the STATUS SCREEN which you might remember from the start of the project when it was empty. It now displays the files you created in the profiling procedure. You have the option to rename the file if you wish to.

37. Click SAVE PROJECT.

Easy media will automatically save the two files (linearization curves – XXXXX.ppc and ICC profile – XXXXX.icc,) to the profiles library that Caldera RIP uses.

38. Click QUIT.

Your profile is ready to use in the main RIP window.
