Welcome to The Reader Organisation at Calderstones April to June event guide! The
Reader Organisation is a charitable social enterprise working to connect people with
great literature and each other. We bring people together in weekly shared reading
groups to listen to poems and stories read aloud, as well as running courses, events
and activities for people of all ages and backgrounds.
Our shared reading groups are for everyone; we read in schools, hospitals, prisons,
care homes, community centres, libraries, offices and many more places across the
UK, as well as at Calderstones. The groups are small and informal, meeting weekly to
come together and share the reading experience with tea, biscuits, and good
company.
We are transforming Calderstones Mansion into a home for The Reader Organisation
and a place where literature is used as a force for social good; building community,
enhancing lives, reducing social isolation and helping people to maximise their
potential. We are building a community for everyone; we want people to read, learn,
play, make new friends and find new opportunities here.
“Can we come back every Saturday and every holiday?”
Theo, 5, February’s Half Term Hijinks
Over the past year we’ve welcomed thousands of people from Liverpool and across
the world through the doors of the Mansion House, and we’re delighted to share our
packed spring programme with you. Highlights include the opening of The Reader
Gallery with an exciting series of exhibitions, an Easter Eggstravaganza of events for
children and young people, the latest Crafternoons and the return of Shakespeare’s
Globe with a brand new production.
“Calderstones was a wonderful venue to take a touring Shakespeare play. The warmth of
the audience response together with the beautiful setting made for an
unforgettable few days in Liverpool.”
Tom Bird, Executive Producer, Shakespeare’s Globe
The brand new Reader Café opened its doors at the end of March and we’ve been
delighted with the response so far. Pop in to enjoy a tasty lunch, hot drink or slice of
cake every day, 8.30am-4.30pm. Don’t forget that there’s a weekly schedule of shared
reading groups for adults and children in the Mansion House and we always welcome
new members.

Claudio loves Hero and Hero Claudio and nothing seems capable of keeping them apart. Claudio’s friend Benedick loves Beatrice and Beatrice Benedick, but (because neither will admit it) nothing seems capable of bringing them together. Only the intrigues of a resentful prince force Benedick to prove his love for Beatrice –by killing his best friend. Driven along by a romance all the more charming for being in denial, Much Ado About Nothing is a miracle of comic and dramatic suspense and gives us, in the bantering Beatrice and Benedick, two of Shakespeare’s wittiest, most endearing pair of lovers. Performed at the Globe and touring across the UK and Europe. The performances are promising to be very popular so book early to avoid disappointment.
Join the conversation on twitter by using the hashtag #MuchAdo We look forward to seeing you there!

Leisure
WHAT is this life if, full of care,We have no time to stand and stare?—No time to stand beneath the boughs,And stare as long as sheep and cows:No time to see, when woods we pass,Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass:No time to see, in broad daylight,Streams full of stars, like skies at night:No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,And watch her feet, how they can dance:No time to wait till her mouth canEnrich that smile her eyes began?A poor life this if, full of care,We have no time to stand and stare.
