Orbit 2020 is Orbit Group’s vision and our purpose is ‘Building Communities’. This calendar focuses on the ways in which Orbit Independent Living teams contribute to the delivery of the Orbit 2020 vision – by providing new homes, access to learning and training opportunities, encouraging digital inclusion and investing in our communities, thus improving the social, economic and environmental lives of people and enabling individuals to live independently. Leading the sector in helping people with dementiaOrbit was shortlisted for an International Dementia Award for a pilot project working with the Dementia Services Development Centre at the University of Stirling to help develop a dementia toolkit that is being rolled out to housing associations across the UK. The toolkit is helping to better train housing association staff to assist people living with dementia.

Building a community at Shortwood Court in Coventry
people over the age of 55 and promotes independent living while giving people support if they need it. They have many social activities and last year, the Wyken Male Voice Choir came along to perform and enjoy a sing-along with customers.

Queensway Court, Leamington Spa, WarwickshireQueensway Court is an independent living with care scheme for people aged over 55. In partnership with Deeley Construction, Orbit delivered 178 one and two bedroom apartments which were made available for rent or shared ownership.

Dementia Awareness Week 18 to 24 May 2016Every year during Dementia Awareness Week, Orbit Independent Living hosts a variety of events to share information about dementia. Last year at Briar Croft in Stratford-upon-Avon, family members, carers and guests came along to learn more about how to support people who may be living with the disease.

Deepmore Road supported scheme for young people, Rugby
Despite adversity, Jessica studied full time at college and worked part-time to maintain her tenancy at Deepmore Road in Warwickshire. She is now attending Aston University, studying Biomedical Science.

Blooming marvellous!Gardening can be a great way to get people involved and create a beautiful place to live. A number of Orbit schemes enter local gardening competitions and some have won awards. Last year, Childwick House in Newmarket, Cullum Road in Bury St Edmunds, Barkers Herne in Norfolk and Marler House in Bexley brought home the top prizes!

Orbit’s new hoarding support and advice serviceOrbit’s brand new hoarding service provides advice, support and practical help to individuals with compulsive hoarding tendencies and those affected by self-neglect. Compulsive hoarding can have a debilitating effect on individuals, their family, friends and the local environment, impacting on their physical and mental health.

New partnership with Jobs at HomeLast year, Orbit launched a new partnership with Jobs at Home to provide a handyperson service for people living in Coventry, Bedworth and Nuneaton. Jobs at Home is a social enterprise that provides low cost and innovative ways of providing training and jobs for the community.

Our managing agent partnersWe partner with a wide range of managing agents to deliver support and care services including refuges for women experiencing domestic abuse, homelessness and supported living for people with physical disabilities. Our partners helped deliver a refurbished communal lounge at Silent Street in Ipswich, Suffolk, a scheme for adults with learning disabilities.

Orbit’s pet policyLast year, we extended our ‘pet policy’ in our sheltered and independent living extra care schemes to include the East and South. Although the policy has strict guidelines, it encourages responsible pet ownership and helps avoid anti-social behaviour.
