Experiencing Patience

The debut of Finding Patience - the Story of Holly Springs is This month at Holly Springs Cultural Center.

With so many relative newcomers, few people who call Holly Springs home know much of its history. Angie Ottosen Staheli is looking to change that. She has wanted to learn about, and share, the town’s history since moving here three years ago. She is writer and director for “Finding Patience - The Story of Holly Springs,” being performed this month at Holly Springs Cultural Center. With a cast of nearly 80, it is the story of a community, told by the community. “They’re excited to do justice to the story, to honor those who have gone before us,” Ottosen Staheli said. Kathleen Hébert, the center’s manag-er, had been seeking an opportunity to bring an original production here. “Of course, ‘Finding Patience’ being the history of Holly Springs, the Holly Springs Cultural Center is the perfect place for it to debut,” she said. The central character is Patience, an African-American freed slave who watches over Holly Springs. With humor and heart, Patience un-covers the town’s roots.

“She weaves in and out of the lives of those who have sacrificed in building up this town,” Ottosen Staheli said. “She helps us understand the im-portance of everything that we already have here.”

The play is historical fiction. A primary source for Ottosen Staheli in her re-search was town historian Barb Ko-

blich. She is author of the Images of America book “Holly Springs.” The stage production covers the time period from before the Civil War to the present day. It features original music by Reed Jacob.

Ottosen Staheli hopes “Finding Pa-tience” will inspire other communities to tell their own story. Living in a town while knowing noth-ing of its history is like starting a book in the middle,” she said. “You don’t really understand its con-text because you’ve missed the begin-ning.”

Main movement Construction is approaching comple-tion on the extension of Main Street to join Piney Grove Wilbon Road. The purpose of the project is to im-prove traffic flow through southwestern Holly Springs, especially at the intersec-tion of Avent Ferry Road and N.C. 55.

Piney Grove Wilbon Road traffic will be diverted onto the new road alignment by the end of this month if the weather co-operates. The project is expected to wrap up by late July. Left turning traffic at Avent Ferry Road and N.C. 55 should decrease substan-tially with an extended Main Street.. The intersection of South Main Street and Village Walk Drive will be challeng-ing at times since the N.C. Department of Transportation will not allow a traffic signal at this location. Locals will want to avoid trying to cross South Main Street from Walmart to Vil-lage Walk Drive or trying to turn left from Village Walk onto South Main during rush hours. The intersection of Main Street and N.C. 55 Bypass also will be more congested during rush hours also.

Extension of South Main Street to a realigned Piney Grove Wilbon

Road could be ready to open late this month. Work is expected

to continue through July.

Join us at the Jefferson L. Sugg Farm at Bass Lake Park Wednesday, July 5 for our annual Independence Day celebration. Last year’s Parks and Recreation 20

th

anniversary fireworks display went over so well that we’ve decided to repeat it. Double the fireworks means double the fun! Festivities begin at 5 p.m. They include games, bounce houses, rides, crafts for kids, and food vendors. Musical entertainment will begin at 6 p.m. with the Holly Springs Community Band. At 7 p.m., The Holiday Band, North Carolina musicians, take the stage. A special feature this year will be the All Veterans Parachute Team, which is sched-uled to perform jumps at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. if the weather permits. The celebration ends with the fireworks, which are scheduled for about 9:15 p.m. They are dependent on the weather also.

Sugg Farm will be the best place to watch the fireworks. It’s at 2401 Grigsby Ave., just down the road from the Womble Park ball fields. Please remember that no outside fireworks are allowed there, including sparklers. Bring lawn chairs and blankets.
