In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!”

Today is a special day in our life together, for we have the opportunity to welcome second graders into full participation in our worship. Though this is a special day for a public welcome, every Sunday is important for living out promises we make at baptism. Indeed, nurturing these families as they worship together is vital to their spiritual life and yours. The children and their parents have worked intently for two weeks to reach this time of welcome. In a sense, though, the work is just beginning! We wish we had a church-wide opportunity to work intently on extending welcome. Instead, here are a few suggestions: If you know a second grader, offer to sit nearby for severalSundays or perhaps send the child a ‘welcome to worship’ note. Your kindness in words and gestures will go a long way toward welcoming the child and supporting the parents. Should you find yourself sitting near children in worship, you might offer to help the children borrow worship kits from the ushers. We know that parents of young children are aware and

concerned when their youngsters are wiggling and noisy during worship. Your affirming smile will ease tension and enable parent and child to settle. It may take a while, but support and encouragement will work. If it has been a particularly hard Sunday for a parent near you, tell them after worship that you realize how difficult it is to do what they’re doing. If you’re a parent, too, tell them about a time you had similar challenges. Most of all, tell them you’re glad they are instilling a habit of worship in their child. Thank you for continuing to welcome children to worship at WMPC.
