Come PLAY with us Check out CCPL’s new “PLAY” (Public Libraries and You) programs and activities scheduled during the evenings and Saturdays so the whole family can visit the library together.

About 100 PLAY events are being scheduled monthly to promote early literacy and create family fun.

John’s Island Regional PLAY: Stone Soup Puppet Show Thursday, December 2 at 6:30 p.m. Children will love this puppet show version of the wonderful story about sharing within a community. John L. Tuesday, December 7 After School Kids (ASK): Time Warp Trio (grades 1 – 5) Dorchester Road at 4:30 p.m. Join the Time Warp Trio in matching events to the correct time period. Participate in a relay race using historical objects, and make your own book for possible time warping.

Wednesday, December 8 The Music of John Lennon Main Library from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Join us for a live musical performance by various artists.

Sunday, December 12 The 6th Annual V-Tones Holiday Ukulele Extravaganza Main Library from 3 – 5:30 p.m. Join us for a rollicking good time. Monday, December 13 Once Upon a Ballet presents The Nutcracker (ages 3 – 5) Mt. Pleasant at 10:30 a.m. Hear the story of The Nutcracker, and then help perform it. Tuesday, December 14 Craftivity: Holiday Ornaments (ages 11 and younger) West Ashley at 3 p.m. Celebrate the season with a one-of-a-kind ornament. Cuttin’ Up: December Holidays (grades 1 – 5) Dorchester Road at 4:30 p.m. Decorate holiday ornaments, and play Pass the Parcel and Santa Bingo.

December 1 – 31 Early Literacy Station (all ages) - Main Library - John’s Island Visit our Early Literacy Station for a fun activity based on the S.C. Day-by-Day Family Literacy Activity Calendar. The theme for December is friends. Enter for a chance to win your very own Activity Calendar. A winner will be drawn on December 31st.

Disney Trivia (ages 5 and up) John L. Dart Stop by the service desk to answer a movie trivia question. Prizes awarded daily! Wednesday, December 1 Countdown 25! Countdown to Christmas (ages 5 – 11) John L. Dart at 1 p.m. Create a calendar for the entire family. Thursday, December 2 Christmas Craft Workshop Otranto Road at 10:30 a.m. Bring the kids for this holiday fun time, make a Christmas tree ornament, a Santa hat and a seasonal gift for that special someone! Fridays, December 3, 10, 17 and 31 Chopsticks (all ages) Main Library from 3 – 5 p.m. Express yourself with coloring and classical music in the children’s room.

Saturdays, December 4, 11 and 18 Silly Bands Saturdays (all ages) Main Library, all day Read a story or poem (or be read to), and get a silly band.

Mondays, December 6, 13 and 20 Mystery Mondays (all ages) Main Library, all day Calling all super sleuths! Stop by the children's room to read and solve the Monday mystery. If you can crack the case, you get a prize! Lunch Pails and Tales (all ages) Main Library at 12 p.m. Have a picnic at the library! Bring your lunch to enjoy as we share stories.

Wednesday, December 29 Toast the New Year with a Cup of Tea (ages 6 and up) John L. Dart at 10:30 a.m. Join a children's writing circle to begin a journal of your dreams and plans for the future. Thursday, December 2 The Real Harry Potter: Magic and Witchcraft in Pre-modern Europe Main Library at 6:30 p.m. Belief in magic and witchcraft were commonplace in Renaissance-era Europe, with people frequently relying on spells and charms as they faced the hazards of everyday life. Join Dr. Jason Coy of the College of Charleston history department as he explores these phenomena and reveals the historical basis of the magical practices featured in the Harry Potter novels.

Tuesday, December 14 Advanced Fiction Writing Main Library from 6:30 – 8 p.m. For all those closet novelists out there: bring your favorite pen and paper, your works-in-progress and your creativity. This recurring fiction workshop series, led by local author Jonathan Sanchez, shows new approaches to infuse your work with specifics, action and

sensory images. The two hours will be split with instruction and interactive exercises, questions and answers, and sharing of writing. Designed to help writers at all levels from beginning to professional, this workshop is a great chance to meet other writers with breakout critique groups encouraged. Thursday, December 16 Phone Camera Amateur Photography Workshop (teens/adults) Dorchester Road at 6:30 p.m. Are you interested in taking better pictures on your camera phone? Bring your camera phone and learn how to produce fine art imaging. Composition, apps and sample photographs will be shared in this amateur photography workshop. Friday, December 17 Scrabble at the Library (adults) St. Andrews from 1 – 4 p.m. All skill levels welcome! No sign up necessary. Saturday, December 18 Dart after Dark: Poetry and Performance with Eclectic Perspectives (adults) John L. Dart at 6 p.m. Join the members of Eclectic Perspectives for an evening of poetry, spoken word and literature. A canned food donation for the homeless is appreciated.

Teens Wednesday, December 1 TeenSpot Half-Day Theater: Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant St. Andrews at 3p.m. Drawn to the dark, unpredictable world of the Cirque du Freak, 16-year-old Darren decides to trade in his ordinary life for a chance to become an immortal vampire. As Darren explores his newfound powers and

faces unexpected enemies, he’ll find that his existence as a member of the undead is filled with more challenges, suspense and fun than he ever thought possible. Refreshments will be served. Rated PG-13; 109 minutes.

Saturday, December 4 Book-in-a-Day Literary Showcase Dorchester Road at 3 p.m. Students from North Charleston High School will read excerpts from and discuss their participation in their first Book-in-a-Day Project. Titled Find Me Beyond Statistics Inside Teardrops, this project is a collaborative poetry book with author and spoken word artist, Kwame Alexander. Wednesday, December 8 Movie Time: A Christmas Story Otranto Road from 3:15 – 5 p.m. A young boy must convince his parents that a toy rifle is the only gift that will make Christmas worthwhile. This is an all-American family Christmas classic. Rated PG; 93 minutes. Thursday, December 9 Teen Advisory Board Meeting Otranto Road from 4 – 5 p.m. Young adults meet to share ideas on programs, services and materials to improve Young Adult Services.

Club Anime! John’s Island from 4 – 5:30 p.m. This will be the last weekday meeting of the year, so feel free to cosplay if you wish, and watch episodes of My Bride is a Mermaid.

Get Creative: Decorate a Votive Candle Holder Dorchester Road at 4:30 p.m. What a wonderful gift to say Happy Holidays! All materials and even a candle will be provided to create your decorated holder. Friday, December 10 Movie Fun: The Golden Compass John L. Dart at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. In a parallel universe where witches rule the skies and armored bears are the bravest warriors, young Lyra Belacqua journeys from her home among the scholars at Oxford to the far North to save her best friend. Tuesday, December 21 TeenSpot Holiday Theater: The Last Airbender St. Andrews at 12 p.m. Follow the adventures of Aang, a young successor to a long line of Avatars, who must put his childhood ways aside and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations. Refreshments will be served. Rated PG; 103 minutes. Wednesday, December 22 TeenSpot Holiday Theater: Charlie St. Cloud St. Andrews at 5 p.m. As the caretaker of the cemetery where his brother Sam is buried, Charlie has lots of time to commune with the dead. Sam visits frequently to hang out with Charlie, but when Charlie meets a mysterious young woman, he must decide whether to move forward or remain trapped in the past. Refreshments will be served. Thursday, December 23 TeenSpot Holiday Theater: Winner of the B2F Vote – The Blind Side St. Andrews at 12 p.m. You voted; we listened. The winner of the Books to Film vote is The Blind Side. Homeless teen Michael Oher knows little about family and less about football until the Touhy family takes him in and gives him a loving home. November 17 – December 12 Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic and Medicine Exhibit Main Library This traveling exhibit explores Harry Potter's world, its roots in Renaissance science and the ethical questions that affected not only the wizards of Harry Potter, but also some of the

great Renaissance thinkers. CCPL was selected as one of only 12 libraries in the nation to host the display, which was organized by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health with the tour coordinated by the American Library Association. December 16 – January 31 Saul Alexander Gallery Exhibit Main Library Addelle Sanders will display her artwork in the Saul Alexander Gallery. Sanders is renowned for brilliant and audacious fiber artworks created from textiles such as fabric, yarns and various natural and synthetic fibers that are used to create extraordinary pieces.

December 1 – 31 Carolina Reindeer Craft Display John’s Island Using the branch of a palm frond, a color scheme, a pair of eyes, a nose, a little paint and other items of fancy and imagination, craftsman Robert Noe brings his unique reindeer creations to life. December 1 – 31 Quilt Display John’s Island Louetta Davis will display her quilt, Louetta’s Heritage. She has taken her family tree, the Bennett Family Tree, and designed a beautifully personalized quilt. Davis is a member of Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach’s “Quilting Lives” group.
