CLASSROOM VISITS

It was very enlightening for me when I

attended the Grade 3M Student Council

speeches last week. I learnt that some of our students wanted

swimming pools and extra-long lunch hours and one student even

promised to make the teachers students for a day and the students

would teach the teachers! Not sure they got any of these promises over

the line but it is great that they are dreaming big!

HOUSE CAPTAINS

Congratulations to our recently elected House Captains who were presented with their badges on

Monday:

WELFARE TEAM

At Templeton we have a very large Welfare Team led by our Assistant Principal, Mrs Andrea Edwards. Students who require a bit of extra support and one on one attention are matched with a staff member who would best suit the student’s needs and personality. These bonds tend to form naturally, but sometimes students need a little help through a more structured approach. All members of staff at Templeton work hard to support our students’ wellbeing every day. Effective communication between home and school makes this possible, so please ensure you attend an interview with your child’s teacher on February 18th or 19th. If you would like to know more about our welfare services please make a time with Mrs Edwards at the office. SCHOOL FEES 2020 (ESSENTIAL EDUCATION ITEMS) Charges to parents for the supply of Essential Education Items including student supplies and excursions as well as Voluntary Payments for School Resources and Buildings were sent home last year. The school purchases all student supplies in good faith for the new school year in one bulk order. This is done to minimise costs for everyone. Thank you to the many families who have already made their payments. This is much appreciated. Reminder letters have been sent home recently to those families who are yet to pay. Parents are reminded to contact the office to make an appointment with myself or our Business Manager, Pam Raines, if a payment plan is required to support the payment of charges. All meetings are strictly confidential. PRIVACY INFORMATION FOR PARENTS & CARERS During the ordinary course of your child’s attendance at our school, school staff will collect your child’s personal and health information when necessary to educate your child, or to support your child’s social and emotional wellbeing or health in the school context. Such information will also be collected when required to fulfil a legal obligation, including duty of care, anti-discrimination law and occupational health and safety law. If that information is not collected, the school may be unable to provide optimal education or support to your child, or fulfil those legal obligations. For example, health information may be collected through the school nurse, primary welfare officer or wellbeing staff member. If your child is referred to a specific health service at school, such as a Student Support Services officer, the required consent will be obtained. Our school also collects information provided by parents and carers through the School Entrance Health Questionnaire (SEHQ) and the Early Childhood Intervention Service (ECIS) Transition Form. Our school may use online tools, such as apps and other software, to effectively collect and manage information about your child for teaching and learning purposes, parent communication and engagement; student administration; and school management purposes. When our school uses these online tools, we take steps to ensure that your child’s information is secure. If you have any concerns about the use of these online tools, please contact us.

When our students transfer to another Victorian government school, personal and health information about that student will be transferred to that next school. Transferring this information is in the best interests of our students and assists that next school to provide optimal education and support to students. In some limited circumstances, information may be disclosed outside of the school (and outside of the Department of Education and Training). The school will seek your consent for such disclosures unless the disclosure is allowed or mandated by law. Our school values the privacy of every person. When collecting and managing personal and health information, all school staff must comply with Victorian privacy law. For more information about privacy including about how to access personal and health information held by the school about you or your child, see our school’s privacy policy: https://www.education.vic.gov.au/Pages/schoolsprivacypolicy.aspx Throughout this notice, ‘staff’ includes principals, teachers, Student Support Service officers, youth workers, social workers, nurses and any other allied health practitioners and all other staff at our school. This includes employees, agents and service providers (contractors) of the Department, whether paid or unpaid. PERSONAL GOODS BROUGHT TO SCHOOL The Department of Education and Training (DET) does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools. Principals have been requested to remind students and parents/guardians of this at the beginning of each academic year and to discourage parents/students from bringing any unnecessary or particularly valuable items to school. Please, try and avoid bringing these items as it can be most upsetting for all concerned if items go missing or are damaged. Smart watches are the latest item students are starting to bring to school so please be aware of the risks in the event of damage etc. WORKING WITH CHILDREN’S CHECKS (WWCC) We encourage and value parental and community support at Templeton Primary School. There are many ways that parents, grandparents and friends can assist at our school. We encourage all parents to obtain a Working with Children Check that will allow you to be very involved in your child’s education. These checks are free for volunteers.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

We are pleased to announce that students at government primary, secondary and specialist schools now have access to free sanitary items if they require them at any stage. This program is designed to assist students with the confidence that sanitary items are readily accessible at school, reduce unnecessary anxiety and ease the cost of living for families. Dispensers are now located in the female T-Court toilets.

Assistant Principal

The Mobile Phone Epidemic

I am sick of sharing my phone with my children.

‘Can I use your phone?’ is a question I am asked at least ten times a day, and sometimes not at all.

Sometimes my phone is just taken from me. Blatantly, and without warning.

All parents know this feeling of panic when we can’t find our phone. We are so hopelessly addicted to

them that we start experiencing withdrawals within minutes of non-use amid our desperate need to

share every waking moment of child-related success on social media.

And we are turning our children into little addicts as well. If you don’t believe me, try taking a phone

from a child when they are in the middle of a game. The reaction is not pleasant. It sounds like a

meerkat in a screeching match with a feral cat.

And once you wrestle the phone away from the child, the screeching intensifies until you either give the

phone back, or forced to threaten Time Out, no TV or some other punitive punishment.

Some children already have their own phone. My wife and I have not caved in yet, but we are thinking

the end of Grade 6 will be about right for our kids as they start secondary school away from their

Helicopter Assistant Principal father.

Phones in schools have again been a talking point in 2020, as the State Government has enforced a

strict no-phone policy in schools. At Templeton, we have already enforced this policy through School

Council, where student phones are locked in their teacher’s drawer between 9:00am and 3:30pm. The

benefits of this policy are pretty obvious at primary school, but as the husband of a secondary school

teacher, the benefits at that level are even more so.

One lesson, my wife asked a student to attend homework club because he failed to hand in an

assignment. Within 2 minutes, she had received an email from an irate parent demanding to know why

her son was being forced into homework club. The student had texted his Mum directly from his phone

in class!

Page 7: Calendar - templetonps.vic.edu.au · Thursday 26th March Prep to Grade 2 Sports Morning Friday 27th March End Term 1—Finish 2.30pm Term 2 ... if a payment plan is required to support

While we have Mobile Phones at Templeton under control, we have noticed recently that more and more

students are wearing Smart Watches at school. Some students and parents have asked what the policy is

regarding Smart Watches, so here is a summary of the expectations we have of these devices:

Smart Watches and Fit Bits are allowed to be worn at Templeton

Smart Watches and Fit Bits must be used as a watch or step counter only

Any other functionality of the watch is strictly prohibited

If students are caught messaging, playing games or any other functionality, their watch will be

confiscated and locked in the drawer with other mobile devices.

Our Mobile Phone policy is on our website for download, and you can also visit the DET website for further

information. If parents have any other questions or concerns about Mobile Devices and Smart Watches at

Templeton, please contact me at school. I can usually be found playing on my phone in the staffroom.

Have a great weekend everyone,

Marc Crilly

Assistant Principal

SCHOOL UNIFORM NEWS

We are introducing the “Skort” for girls as an alternate choice to the current style of

unisex summer shorts. The skort is a short that has a flap across the front to give the

appearance of a skirt. If there is enough interest in the item, we will consider carrying

them as a normal item.

Sample sizes will be available from Monday 17th to Thursday 27th February in the

Uniform Shop.

The price of the skort will be $23.00.

PARENT HELPERS READING COURSE

As an integral part of The Early Years Literacy Program, we are offering a Reading Helpers’ course designed specifically to support children’s reading at school.

The course will consist of two sessions. The first one will be a training session, while the second will not only include information about how to assist children with their reading but provide the opportunity to work with small groups of children. Each session will be approximately one hour and held in Room 30. Parents have the option of attending the Wednesday or Friday sessions on the dates listed below

Wednesday sessions: 2:15pm – 3:20pm Friday sessions: 2:15pm – 3:20pm

Session 1: 4th March Session 1: 6th March

Session 2: 11th March Session 2: 13th March

The course will develop in participants an increased understanding of the development of literacy skills. The sessions will focus on the reading process and how we can assist children to maximise their skills and strategies in the literacy area. Materials needed for each session will be supplied by the school.

Only parents who have completed the training sessions can assist in the classroom as reading helpers.

More information and the downloadable reply slip can be found in Xuno News, Parent Reading Helpers’ Course 2020.

Thank you.

MUSIC NEWS

IS YOUR CHILD INTERESTED IN LEARNING THE FLUTE, CLARINET,

SAXOPHONE, TRUMPET, TROMBONE OR DRUMKIT AT TEMPLETON

PRIMARY SCHOOL DURING SCHOOL HOURS?

If your child is in years 3 – 6 and would like to learn the trumpet, trombone, saxophone, clarinet, flute

or drum kit during school hours then you may like to gain more information by picking up a brochure at

the school office or from Mrs Wood. A private company, Musicorp, run these classes at our school and

their fees cover the cost of instrument hire and a weekly thirty minute lesson. When children become

proficient on their instrument, they are then able to join the Templeton Band.

IS YOUR CHILD INTERESTED IN LEARNING THE VIOLIN DURING SCHOOL HOURS OR JOINING THE

TEMPLETON STRINGS?

Limited places are available for children interested in learning the violin during school hours, but only if

your child is in years 2-6. For more information please ring our private tutor, Vicky Howse. Her phone

number is 0407853032.

JOINING THE TEMPLETON STRINGS GROUP

Every Wednesday lunchtime, our violin tutor, Vicky Howse, conducts our Templeton Strings group.

This group includes some of her own students and many others who learn privately outside school. Any

stringed instrument player is welcome (violin, cello) but they must have been learning their instrument

for a year or more and have basic music reading skills. The cost for each Strings session is $8.50 (payable

to Vicky).

For further information about any of these opportunities, please feel free to chat to Mrs Wood before or

after school any Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
