1949Cummins has a rich heritage in

the trucking industry, here you

can see some fne Freightliner

specimens in all their glory.

The Freightliner Bubblenose

was the pioneer o the COB

cab-over-engine tractor in 1949,powered by Cummins 225 hp

HR85 engine. The frst sold to a

private carrier was the renowned

Hyster No.1 which was also the

frst ever sleeper COE. Compact

& lightweight, the COE enabled

heavier & bulkier loads while

meeting the many dierent truck

regulations in the western states.

1934Cummins entered two

cars into the Indy-500.

No. 5 car was a 2-cycle

No. 6 car was a 4-cycle.

The cars set 12 dierent

world records in the race

including highest speedand best fnish or a

diesel powered car.

The 4-cycle proved more

dependable, efcient and

more powerul than the

2-cycle variant.

explorer Snow Cruiser

was the frst o the giant

diesel-electric wheeled

vehicles, leading the

way or the design o

the huge mining haul

truck class. The uniqueGeneral Electric drive

system incorporated two

Cummins H-6 engines

with 300 hp installed

power. You can see it

here in its development.

500, Cummins No.61

Green Hornet became

the worlds astest diesel

at 165 mph running

on the sun hardened

Bonneville Salt Flats in

Utah. A 340 hp racing

version o the JS engine

eatured supercharging

& premiered the new

pressure regulated (PT)

uel injection system.

No.61 set diesel speed

records over 1 mile,

5 miles & 10 miles.

The hornet had a

Kurtis-Krat chassis.

1932Clessie wanted to establish

Cummins in the ast-growing

bus market. His idea was

to perorm the same stunt

that launched Cummins

successul inclusion in the

trucking industry: a coast-

to-coast run. The Model H

engine was installed in to a

10 tonne passenger bus.

The engine perormed

with near perection or the

duration o the 91 hour and

10 minute journey.

to San Francisco in

1935 on $7.62 worth

o uel. Fitted with the

Model A engine,

Clessie completed

exactly 3,774 miles.

On route he stopped

at the Hoover Dam

construction site and

witnessed his diesel

engine powering

construction trucks.

1952Their spectacular

Indianapolis 500 entry,

the No. 28 Cummins

Engine Special, was a

car designed and built by

Frank Kurtis, whose carsdominated open-wheel

racing in America.

Not only did the 3,100-lb

car win the pole position

in qualiying that year with

a speed o 138.010 mph,

it also outran Ferraris

12-cylinder race car by

nearly 4 mph.

Equipment Co. built the

frst diesel powered fre

truck in the U.S. and

possibly the frst in the

world. The original truck

is located at a fre station

near the Cummins ofce in
