2015/2016 was a year of celebration for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Sixty years of presenting the world’s greatest music to Calgary audiences, and ten years of growth and transformational music under the artistic leadership of our longest serving Music Director, Roberto Minczuk.

2016/2017 is the year we start creating new history! We welcome Roberto back as our Music Director Laureate to open our Season with the profound Symphony No. 4 by Anton Bruckner, to once again lead our Fall Festival (this year on a saucy Latin American theme), and to complete the epic cycle of Mahler symphonies with the 9TH Symphony, which proved to be Mahler’s final composition. In between, you will be energized by dynamic up-and-coming conductors as we search for our next great Music Director.

Soloists Sarah Chang, Yamandu Costa and Branford Marsalis are the gold standard internationally. Equally exciting are Calgary Philharmonic friends Janina Fialkowska and André Laplante, and new acquaintances like Roberto Díaz and Konstantin Shamray. You will be amazed!

Our programs this Season include many of the most engaging classical music works of all time, stunning new works that will soon be classic, and creative approaches to popular genres. Music is for everyone and the Calgary Philharmonic is committed to making great music a part of the lives of all Calgarians. The power of music brings people together, lifts spirits, and builds community.

Join us as the musical adventure continues!

BUENOS AIRES TANGOWITH SARAH CHANG

Onward to Argentina, with a spotlight shining on the sultry and evocative capital city Buenos Aires and the sexy, sensual nuevo tango style that Astor Piazzolla pioneered. His masterwork, Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, sizzles under the spell of violinist Sarah Chang. The intertwined works of Argentina’s composing tradition, past and present − from Golijov’s Piazzolla tribute, to Estancia composed by Piazzolla’s first composition teacher − are also explored.

A triumph within the choral canon, Brahms’ Requiem is an intensely beautiful masterpiece with an underlying humanist theme of comfort. Composed for an unrequited love, Bartók’s Violin Concerto lay untouched for 50 years. Contrasting celestial against witty moods, this tribute to a failed romance is masterfully interpreted by Concertmaster Diana Cohen.

MOZART REQUIEM

Mozart’s emotionally dramatic Requiem remains one of his most powerful and riveting works. Feverishly written as the composer was on his deathbed, this enigmatic choral monument continues to fascinate audiences with the shadowy circumstances surrounding the work’s commission and completion. Beethoven’s introspective Fourth Piano Concerto balances the evening with gracious aplomb.

Mendelssohn’s immensely popular Violin Concerto is beautifully interpreted by rising Canadian talent Timothy Chooi. A prolific composer, Haydn’s No. 99, one of the famed “London Symphonies”, provides a harmonious interlude before Shostakovich’s upbeat, almost breezy Ninth Symphony, a work he personally considered “a joyful little piece,” brings the evening to a glorious crescendo.
