Aside from shielding yourself from loud noise, it may also help to monitor your intake of some common over-the-counter (OTC) medications when it comes to preventing hearing loss. Recent research suggests that frequent use of ibuprofen or acetaminophen may also contribute to hearing loss. According to the study, women who took these OTC pain relievers at least twice a week were at greater risk for hearing loss (as were men, who were also found to be susceptible to aspirin-related hearing loss). More frequent usage of the pain relievers was found to result in a 24 percent elevated risk of hearing loss. The damage may result from reduced blood fl ow to the cochlea, the snail-shaped mechanism of the inner ear. The cochlea contains nerve endings that are essential for hearing. It is not uncommon for people with a mild to moderate hearing loss to be unaware of their problem, even though family and friends are quite aware of it. Hearing loss is invisible and almost always painless. There are no physical warning signs, except in some cases there may be ringing in one or both ears. For more information, or to schedule a hearing consultation, please call PLATTE VALLEY HEARING CENTER at 970-867-9993. Our offi ce is located at 409 E. Platte Ave., Fort Morgan.
Common medications may promote hearing loss
By Ken McDowell Sports Editor The Caliche Buffalos dominated the second and third quarters in their 44-20 Plains Conference victory at home Friday over the Akron Rams in eight-man football action. Caliche improves to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Plains Conference while Akron falls to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the league. Caliche Coach Paul Zink was concerned if his team could stop the tough single wing offense the Rams have always been
successful running. But as it turned out, it was Akron that was unable to stop Caliche’s running game, led by senior quarterback Mitch Davison with 148 yards on 18 carries and fi ve touchdowns. “I thought we played tough football and our offensive line took over the game in the second quarter,” Zink said. “We also stepped up big on defense. “We only see the single wing offense once a year and that’s when we play Akron, and I thought our kids did a good job containing it.”
An eight-yard touchdown run by Davison put the Buffs up 6-0 in the fi rst quarter, but Akron came back with a TD and two-point conversion to take an 8-6 lead heading into the second period. That’s when the Buffs kicked into high gear with Davison scoring on seven and 45-yard runs and senior Chase Debus reaching paydirt from 32 yards out. Akron scored a second quarter touchdown, but Caliche was beginning to take control of the contest with a 26-14 halftime lead. The Buffs blanked Akron 12-0 in the third period to increase the lead to 38-14 on a 16-yard TD run by Davison and a 13-yard TD strike from Davison to Debus. Davison scored on a four-yard
run to open the fourth quarter, giving the Buffs their biggest lead of the contest at 44-14. Akron added a late touchdown to close out the scoring. Debus fi nished with 85 yards rushing on 10 carries and a TD; junior Austin Yahn 58 yards on 12 carries and senior Austin Zink 16 yards on 4 carries. Davison was 4-for-5 passing for 41 yards and a TD. Senior Dakota Kingsley had 2 catches for 20 yards; Debus had the TD catch for 13 yards and senior Jayden Stieb one catch for 16 yards. On defense Zink and Debus each had 9 tackles and Yahn and Stieb 6 each. Yahn also recovered an Akron fumble. The Buffs did not turn the ball over the entire
contest, which was another key to the victory. Caliche is ranked third in eight-man football by Colorado Preps. The Buffs will travel to Merino Friday for another big Plains Conference contest against an up and coming Rams team. Merino is 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference after defeating Haxtun Friday, 34-14. Friday is also Homecoming night at Merino. “This will be another tough game,” Zink predicted, “so we better be prepared. Merino is on a roll and they are a good team. “Their running backs have good speed and they have a very stout offensive line. Their receivers catch the ball well and they are always tough on defense. It should be a great game.” Kick-off time is at 7:30 p.m.
By Ken McDowell Sports Editor HAXTUN – An impressive 34-14 Plains Conference road victory by the Merino Rams Friday over the Haxtun Bulldogs was a big confi dence builder for Merino. The Rams improve to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the Plains Conference while Haxtun falls to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the league. Merino led 6-0 at the end of the fi rst quarter and increased the margin to 28-6 at halftime. Neither team reached paydirt in the third period. In the fi nal frame Haxtun out-scored Merino 8-6 but the Rams already had the eight-man victory securely in their hands. “We have improved week to week in different areas since the beginning of the season,” said Merino Coach Marlan Tramp. “We have been taking big strides in fundamentals, like blocking, tackling and securing the football.
“Our biggest strength has been our defense and throughout most of the season we have played very physical. We are starting to get more confi dence on offense and defense.” Merino’s defense held Haxtun to just 75 yards rushing and 56 yards passing. On offense senior Aris Shino rushed for over 130 yards. The Rams will host the Caliche Buffalos Friday in the annual Homecoming game at Merino, with kick-off time slated for 7:30 p.m. in the Plains Conference matchup. Caliche enters the contest with a 6-0 overall mark and 3-0 in the Plains Conference. Tramp sees two evenly matched teams taking the fi eld against each other Friday. “I think both teams are pretty similar,” he said. “Caliche has very good skilled players and they are very physical on every down. They are well coached and are very fundamentally sound. “I know Caliche’s confi dence level is high coming off a big win last week against Akron, so I hope we stay with them. Our win over Haxtun also gives us a lot of confi dence and playing at home could also be an advantage for us. We just need to play well the whole game.”
