Malott, now 40, a 10- time PBA titlist and Hall of Fame-eligible PBA com- petitor, rolled games of 238, 256 and 227 Wednes- day night for a 721 three- game series and a convinc- ing victory over 2016 PBA Player of the Year EJ Tack- ett of Huntington, Ind., and Jason Belmonte of Austra- lia, who recorded 664 and 640 series, respectively, in the revival of the made-for- television King of Bowling special event. The Xtra Frame Pay Per View series, which aired exclusively on the PBA’s live-streaming service that didn’t exist the last time Malott won the crown, was conducted as part of the PBA’s return to Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine, for the MaineQuarterly. com Mark Roth/Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship and the L.L. Bean PBA League Elias Cup finals. Malott dominated the original King of Bowling series at the Kegel Training Center in Lake Wales, Fla., in 2009, winning challenge matches five consecutive weeks against Parker Bohn III, Chris Barnes, Patrick Allen, Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Rhino Page. “I wish we had been able to do something like this sooner, especially after the performance I had at Keg- el,” Malott said. “Any time you can compete against the hottest players of the time, it’s great fun. It might not have meant as much to Jason or EJ as it did to me, but it was something I needed to prove to myself. “I haven’t had the drive I need to have lately, so to be able to bowl against the best and take them down in a somewhat convincing manner was enjoyable. It felt a little like a regular TV show, and I haven’t been in that position for a while. But that’s the reason you do this. It’s a whole lot more than the money, and to do it in front of the fans here in Maine was awesome.” Malott will now turn his attention to the L.L. Bean PBA League competition, which gets underway with an eight-game “seeding” round Thursday when all eight teams will bowl to establish bracket positions for this weekend’s compe- tition. And then it’s back home to Texas where the now- father of two boys and a daughter will be taking his kids to softball, baseball, bowling events non-stop. “My wife and I have something going every day until August 2,” Malott grinned. “And then school starts.” PORTLAND, Maine — Kyle Troup of Taylorsville, N.C., and Sweden’s Jesper Svensson became the first team of two-handed play- ers to win the MaineQuar- terly.com Mark Roth/Mar- shall Holman PBA Doubles Championship Sunday at Bayside Bowl, throwing a closing string of 10 con- secutive strikes to defeat Marshall Kent of Yakima, Wash., and EJ Tackett of Huntington, Ind., 279-195, in the title match. Despite throwing the ball from op- posite sides of the lane, they bowled like fraternal twins in Maine. “It was fantastic,” Svensson said. “The first couple of shots we were a little firm, but we were locked in after that. Janss Marketplace tried to place a bowling center on the grounds of its Thou- sand Oaks retail center be- fore its two-year effort fell through. But the collapse of that deal didn’t come be- cause of lack of trying. So don’t be surprised if bowling centers find a home in some California malls – an idea that may have been farfetched years ago. There’s been much talk about the “death of the mall,” but mall owners don’t quite see it that way. And just because they lose some retail anchors doesn’t mean they’re not creative enough to find a suitable replacement that can draw in people – and a profit. SAN RAFAEL — It has been 30 years since Marin County ABC hosted the 42th Annual California State Men’s Bowl-ing Championships in 1987. It was conducted by the California State Bowling Association with Doubles & Singles at Country Club Bowl in San Rafael and Team event at Nave Lanes in Novato. This year, the 12th Annual CaliforniaUSBC Open and Women’s Championship Tournament, hosted by the Marin County USBC, began on April 7 with Team, Doubles & Singles kicking off at Country Club Bowl.

Looking back at the biggest difference since 1987 would be the number of bowlers. Back then it was nearly 2500 teams of five men for 18 weekends. Bowlers even had to check their bowling bags in a special area. This year we look forward to welcoming almost 500 teams of four men, mixed or women’s teams, to Marin County for 9 weekends. In 1987 the tournament was 18 weekends, April to August. This year will be 9 weekends April 7- June 18. No Bowling Easter Weekend, April 14-16, Mother’s Day weekend, May 12-14, or CUSBC Convention weekend June 9-11. In July, the CUSBC Youth Championships will also be at Country Club Bowl.

Highlights of the first weekend:

Opening ceremony on Saturday included the presentation of colors by the Novato High School ROTC, official greet-ings from CUSBC President Rosie Parker, MCUSBC President Vern Coleman, Tournament Manager Kathy Bruegeman, and Country Club Bowl Manager Stacy Aldred.

On Saturday April 8, James Brown of Fountain Valley and Upland Bowl rolled a 299! James’ last 300 game was four years ago, so he was ready for another. He has three perfect games and an 813 high series to his bowling credits. John Stark organized the two teams from Fountain Valley.

Terry Lankster of Empire Bowl and Redlands, rolled the first perfect game of the tournament in the afternoon squad on Saturday, April 8 on lanes 39-40. This was his very first sanctioned 300 game for the 203 average bowler. At age 54 he is already a two-time retiree having retired from the Marine Corps and as a Sheriff of Riverside County. Terry currently bowls in four leagues as well as coaching 80 to 90 youth bowlers at Empire Bowl. He almost didn’t come to the tournament this year as he was having trouble with his own bowling, but after some ball work from Zack Jellsey, he credits Zack for the perfect game. His friend, Jessie Cannon organized the two teams to bowl the tournament. Terry’s future goals – topping his highest series of 764--now on to that 800!

It’s nice to see the groups coming into the center wearing matching Team Shirts. The Bay Area Muni teams and as well as the group of Orange County KutUps were lookin’ good in their bowling shirts. If you haven’t signed up for the 2017 tournament, there are still times available and the deadline to enter is June 18, 2017 if lanes are available.

Asking bowlers what they plan to do in their off time - going to San Francisco with a ride over the Golden Gate Bridge and a visit to Pier 39, Wine Country, the Graton Casino, Muir Woods or just out for a nice dinner at one of the many local restaurants with the traveling bowling friends. Bowlers seemed to like the new Bowling Shirts that are available through the CUSBC website and they were even already reserving their spots for the 2018 tournament to be held at Keystone Lanes in Norwalk. Check the CUSBC website at www.calusbc.com for tournament results.

WINNETKA – So where was Johnnie Englehart?

And where was Tim Tripp?

That’s what ace bowlers Russell Booth, Charles Kenny, Karl Kurtz and Rusty Bryant wanted to know as they posed for a photo in the Winnetka Bowl pro-shop last week.

The foursome represented a whopping 218 perfect games among them.

Englehart and Tripp are frequent visitors to Winnetka Bowl but they weren’t around this Tuesday night. The two elite bowlers would have padded that perfecto number by more than a hundred – easily.

As it was, Booth, Kenny, Kurtz and Bryant had to be content with representing a couple of hundred perfectos – not to mention 127 800 series.

Here’s the breakdown: Kenny, 92 perfectos, 60 800 se-ries, 244 average; Bryant, 68 perfectos, 35 800s, 217 aver-age; Kurtz, 46 perfectos, 28 800s, 225 average; and Booth, 12 perfectos, four 800s, 221 average.

That’s a lot of talent in one room. Here is the fearsome foursome: from left, Russell Booth, Karl Kurtz, Rusty Bryant and Charles Kenny.

31 bowlers advanced to the “Beat the Board Fi-nals”. Where you finish is where you will cash.

We had a nice 127 En-trants (Two Squads) in our third event and MANY new members again. People I have not seen in two years.

We are making adjust-ments to make things bet-ter for our bowlers. This is only our third event and most all directors had little or no experience and are

doing a very good job for us. Thanks for the diligent work!!

Champion Rauf Caluag used a Maxim?? Wow?? Driller is unknown to him!! Rauf hails from Lawndale. His father, Lupito is also an X-Frame Bowler. I’m sure he is proud of him! Con-grats Rauf !!

Annie Liao is from Rowland Heights and used a DV8 Pit Bull, drilled by none other than Memo Ro-sales at Chaparral Lanes.

Annie is a Pharmacy Tech at Walmart and very well-liked by all. She thanks Glen, Billy, Angel, Cindy, Karen and David for support. Nice bowling by a nice young lady.

In 3rd and bowling very well was Kelly Manuel of Walnut! She used a Sure-Lock drilled by Memo and Brian at Chaparral Lanes. She’s a sweet, well-liked young lady. She has many friends who have joined X-Frame.

• HARRY GRANT won the CORONA BOWL Washington Singles in 1968. He was the KING, on and off the lanes. His Singles was sanctioned, 5 pin drop rule, re-rates possible, had hundreds of squad organizers, four persons on a lane and be familiar with A.B.C. Rule #306! Lots of tales could be told!

• BETTY GOULDING put together an Eleventh Anniversary Sweeper. Prize fund totaled $1,111.11. More fun stuff - - - 5 cents cigars, 10 cent beer and steak dinners $1.95. CLARK CENTER was always jumpin’, when BETTY was around.

• WOW! The first “HAVE YOU HEARD” column made it’s appearance. Gossip? Could have been. Dirt? When possible. Who wrote the column? ‘Twas a secret.

• On the weekend of May 23-24-25, there were 8 marathons, 4 singles, 12 squads of Blue Chip, dozens of pot games and doubles, doubles, doubles.

• At last - - - equal prize funds for men and women.

• Tournament clubs were starting to pop up; 200’s, 600’s, and 700’s. Every center and organization was forming clubs and scheduling matches.

• MONTEBELLO BOWL blasted bowlers about their “Wild Mustang” car league. Only $6.00 per week. Even the Sponsor of the winning team got a Fastback! Plus Point Money!

• MAR-LIN-DO did a lot of advertising and had a story every week. Their daily Blue Chip squads were very popular. But - - - it didn’t seem to be a FUN place to bowl. The big guns around town didn’t bowl tournaments there, join leagues, or put up the big numbers. MARILYN BLYTHE shot a 300 (100-100-100).Yup. She did. It was reported in their house column.

• The “fun lanes” and “action lanes” were usually the same. VERDUGO HILLS, KONA LANES, PALM SPRINGS LANES, RESEDA BOWL, MONTEBELLO, TROPICANA LANES, ENCINO BOWL, ARCADIA BOWL, just to name a few favorites. What were yours???

• READERS - - - Why not share memories with us? Just drop us a line, call on Mondays or E-MAIL us a story. Spelling doesn’t count.

• EDDIE COCHEM’S Summer Singles at CAL BOWL was in their 9th season. $10,000 in the pot.

• A familiar face at NORWALK BOWL was LEO TARTAMELLO. He was Secretary of the Car League. For the past 30 years he has been making scrapbooks for bowlers. He saved every Bowling News and Pacific Bowler - - - clipped articles and pictures, and has made hundreds of memory books. Big thanks, LEO!!!

• “Gossip” was popular even in the 60’s. Many phone calls and visits to centers produced the “Have You Heard” column. In one month it went from a few paragraphs, to a full half page. The column lasted over 25 years.

• BETTY MIVELAZ finally won her first WWPB title in Tahoe. She bundled up flowers, a big trophy and $500.00. After placing second three times, she flashed an Olympic smile.

• JACK QUINN has a new position outside his Pro Shop - - - Proprietor/Manager of WESTERN BOWL.

• Bargain buy. 12 lane center in choice location, Plumas County. Any takers??

• Wedding bells rang for HERB “JUDGE” ROTH and MARGARET BUTLER. Gossip whispers that LEE JOUGLARD was getting hitched also.

1969 - PART 2• E.G. MOCK was P.P.C.P. Champ at UNIVERSITY LANES in San Diego. GARY FORD presented $ $ $. Remember GARYcame up to BOWLING SQUARE for a while and finally retired in Las Vegas.

• AZTEC BOWL in Buena Park was the first on the West Coast to install Brunswick Au-tomatic Scorers.

• DICK SANDERS wore his reporters hat all during the running of the Palm Springs Clas-sic. I think DICK chiseled RIP VAN WINKLE scores on Plymouth Rock!

• DON GLOVER of Bakersfield was 6th in PBA winnings, $24,555. He is still a legend in Bakersfield.

• Other Californians on the tour: BILL BURNETTA, LARRY LAUB, JIM GODMAN, DON RUSSELL, JOHN GUENTHER, DAVE SOUTAR, BILL ALLEN, HARRY SMITH, MIKE Mc-CRATH, MIKE DURBIN, GLENN ALLISON, ANDY MARZICH, ART GODDARD, BARRY ASHER, ED BOURDASE, BOBBY KNIPPLE, BUD HORN to name a few. Most were part time, not a profitable way of life!

• TOYO WORLD LANES opened a Tokyo. Why big news? They had 252 LANES!! 300 employees. $.60 per game. They never formed leagues. Men bowled in suits and ties! Fans sat and watched open play “stars”, some wore shirts with their names on the back.If memory serves me, when a couple of centers in So. Calif. were on the drawing board — machines were brough from TOYO and shipped back here.

• Have we mentioned “SPORTSMAN BOWL” in Compton? Owner was WOODLEY LEWIS. Their motto, “Where the action is”. BORING!

• NICK MANCINI was at the helm of the 60 lane PARKWAY BOWL in El Cajon. A first for San Diego was his 200th Anniversary $10,000 Doubles Tournament. On the night of the finals, the Mayor of San Diego called and congratulated the champs. He ran 9 squads every weekend from July 11 to Sept. 21st. I remember ROSA PECK was a regular! VERY REGULAR! ‘Twas only the beginning of the MANCINI tournament rampages! His 10 game marathons were always filled, 300 bowlers! One guy couldn’t get in, went to a nearby center, rolled 10 games, then sued NICK for THIRD PLACE money. The judge laughed. More about him later.

• ALAN POST owned the Pacific Bowler. Better known as “Knobby Knees”. He was over-come by carbon monoxide poisoning. The little devil survived to bicycle another day. He really made bad coffee. His typesetter, Betty, never made a typing error in 5 years.

• DEL MAR LANES was sold and re-named PRO 300 LANES. The new company’s name was “Bowlers For Bowlers, Inc.” Rumor was, there were share holders. Sounds like too many chiefs and not enough Indians. They were selling games 3 for $1.00. What’s on the corner of Crenshaw and Ed Segundo in Gardena as we speak?

• FOR SALE — USED ROUND GUTTERS. $9.50 each. How about a used locker? Only $4.50. Richards had everything.

• Back to PARKWAY BOWL in El Cajon in 1969. They had a Monday morning league that was unusual. All the ladies brought their laundry. A company came, picked up the bags and returned the finished laundry before the league finished. Another was; a 20 week league. Everyone weighed in before bowling league each week. Lady who lost the most weight won the league — plus a shopping spree at Sears. MANCINI would try anything!

• 1969 was a big year for bowling and bowlers — so we will have Part III next time.

what really worked for us. We repeated shots, and what’s what you have to do in this game.

“I told Jesper before the finals that we had already made history by becoming the first team of two-handers to bowl for a doubles title, so we might as well win it, too.”

In the semifinal match, Kent and Tackett, the PBA’s 2013 and ’14 Rookies of the Year, respectively out-struck first-time television finalist Zeke Bayt of Westerville, Ohio, and PBA Tour veteran Dick Allen of Columbia, S.C., 248-228, to advance to the championship match.

In the opening match, Bayt left a 4 pin on his first shot on television and converted the spare before he and Allen threw 10 consecutive strikes in a 287-194 romp past Texas teammates DJ Archer of Friendswood and Shawn Maldo-nado of Houston.

Bayt and Allen continued to pound the pocket in match two, throwing strikes on seven of their first eight shots on their way to a 244-211 victory over Australia’s Jason Belmonte and Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa. Belmonte struggled to carry on the right lane while O’Neill struck on six of his seven shots in the alternate-frame game, but it was Belmonte’s 3-4-6-7-10 split in the seventh frame that ended the team’s hopes.

The PBA Tour on ESPN continues the next four Sun-days at 10 a.m. with quarterfinal, semifinal and champion-ship round coverage of the L.L.Bean PBA League Elias Cup competition.

Next Sunday’s quarterfinal matches will include best-of-two-game Baker format matches between Pete Weber’s GEICO NYC WTT KingPins and the Sysco Philadelphia Hitmen, led by England’s Dom Barrett. The second match features Belmonte’s Lee Auto Malls L.A.X team vs. the defending Elias Cup champion Shipyard Dallas Strikers led by player-manager Norm Duke.

Jason Belmonte Becomes 47th PBA “Millionaire,” Achieves Milestone in

Record for Fewest Tournaments

Australia’s two-handed star, Jason Belmonte, will officially become the 47th member of the PBA “Millionaire’s Club” this week after qualifying for the match play finals of the Mark Roth/Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship at Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine. And he’ll become the fastest player to reach that milestone in terms of the fewest number of events bowled to get to $1 million, thanks in no small part to his collection of 14 career titles including eight majors.

Less than $2,000 shy of the milestone after winning his unprecedented fourth USBC Masters title in February, Belmonte – who is bowling the Roth/Holman Doubles event with partner Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa. – is assured of winning more than the $2,000 he needs to exceed $1 million in official PBA Tour earnings. At age 33 and bowling in his 131st PBA Tour event, he will shatter the record for reaching $1 million in the fewest number of events, previously held by Wes Malott who broke the million-dollar barrier when he won the 2013 U.S. Open in his 180th event.

The youngest player to reach $1 million in career earnings was Pete Weber who was 26 in 1989 when he reached the milestone in his 253rd Tour event.

“Remember when you were smarter than your phone?”

A biker takes his Harley Davidson in for a tune up. On the way to the auto shop he manages a speed of 60 mile per hour. On the way back, his new souped-up Harley does 90 miles per hour. He travels the same distance each way - but what is the average speed of his entire journey?

C.B.N. Brain Busters!

Answer: 72 MILES PER HOUR. Let’s say it’s 60 miles (it’s not necessary to know the actual distance) to the auto shop, so it takes him an hour to get there on the first trip. Therefore it takes him 40 minutes to get home, at 90 miles per hour (or 1.5 miles per minute). So, he’s traveled a total of 120 miles in 100 minutes, or an average speed of 1.2 miles per minute: 1.2 times 60 equals 72 mile per hour.

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. – Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer and Four-time PBA50 Player of the Year Tom Baker of King, N.C., survived a 10th frame shootout in the title match to win the PBA60 Killer ‘B’ Open at Lane Glo Bowl Monday for his first PBA60 title.

Baker, who had thrown a double and nine-count to finish with a 247 game, had to wait in the wings as tournament top qualifier two-time PBA50 Player of the Year Ron Mohr of Las Vegas, had a chance to win the match by one pin with three strikes in the 10th frame. Mohr threw the first two strikes but on the third shot left the 2-4-8 to finish with 245.

“That was a great back and forth match,” said Baker, who is a 12-time winner on the PBA50 Tour and 10-time winner on the PBA Tour. “You couldn’t ask for more than that.

“It’s very rewarding when you can win with a big finish,” the 62-year-old Baker added. “The way Ron was bowling I expected he would probably do the same thing but it looked like he got the ball a little inside in the oil and the ball didn’t have a chance to finish.”

For Baker it was his first national PBA tournament title since winning the 2014 PBA50 Dayton Classic. In 2016, on the PBA50 Tour, he had four top-five finishes with a best of third in the Mooresville Classic.

“I’m looking forward to a good season,” Baker said. “To get a win right out of the gate really adds to your confidence so hopefully there will be more to come.”

Mohr, an eight-time PBA50 Tour winner, who was trying for his first national PBA tournament win since capturing the 2012 PBA50 Senior Decatur (Ill.) Open title, had a combined eight top-five finishes in PBA50 and PBA60 tournaments in 2016 with a best finish of second in the UnitedHealthcare Sun Bowl In The Villages and PBA60 Dick Weber Classic.

In the semifinal match, Mohr beat John Dudak of Orland Park, Ill., 236-231, to ad-vance to the final. Dudak, beat Mike Chrzanowski of Shepherd, Mich., 257-215 in the opening match and Don Blatchford of Santa Monica, Calif., 203-151, in the second match to advance to the semifinal against Mohr.

All five players will join a field of approximately 150 players, including defending champion Walter Ray Williams Jr., for the PBA50 Pasco County Florida Open which begins Tuesday at Lane Glo Bowl with first round qualifying. Qualifying continues on Wednesday which will determine the top 32 players who will advance to match play on Thursday. The top five players will advance to the stepladder finals at 4 p.m. ET.

The Pasco County Florida Open will also be streamed live on PBA’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame. For Xtra Frame subscription and schedule information visit www.xtraframe.tv.

DOWNEY — Going into the third week of the final round in the Brunswick Invitational, Linder’s Insurance and G.J.C. Janitorial were deadlocked at 9-1 to lead the field. A big night from either would help them open up a lead and put them in the driver’s seat as we near the midway mark of the round. A bad night could send them back to the middle of the pack. Neither of which happened though, as the teams battled to a 3-2 score.

Linder’s took the first game by only three pins, beating GJC, 888-885. They had an easier time of it in game #2, winning by 85 pins, giving them a big lead for totals heading into the final game. Game three was a different story for both teams though, as GJC posted a 992, behind a 267 from Nacho Vega and a 257 from John Vallin. And, after averaging 227 as a team for the first two games, Linder’s could only manage a 710 the final game to lose the game and totals as well.

On the second pair, Bowlium took four out of five games from Herzog Insurance, improving to 12-3 for the round to remain among the top teams. After losing game one, Bowlium posted over 1000 the next two games to win totals by over 60. Ramiro Garcia led the pair with a great set of 223-278-289/790. Billy Myers Jr. helped with 265-265/726. Kevin Gagnon had a great set for Herzog Insurance, posting 258-279/749. Bowlium will square off with GJC Janitorial on the top pair next week.

J.A.T. improved to 11-4 with a five game sweep of the Profes-sional Approach team. The Pro Approach squad came into the week at 7-3, and the sweep hurts their chances badly. They’ll need to re-bound in a big way over the next couple of weeks to get back in the hunt. Katrina Fujikami led J.A.T. to the victory with her 267/729 series. Matt Schermerhorn led the pair, shooting a 299-255/743 for The Professional Approach, but it didn’t help them get any needed wins.

Cal Bowl took four out of five from Forest Lanes on the next pair. Steady scores but nothing big on this pair, as most bowlers had a couple good games and one low one. Gip Lentine had the high score, with 240-259/678 for Forest Lanes.

Erickson’s Food Supply improved to 10-5 for the round after sweeping their match against Smirnoff. DeeRonn Booker was the star of the match with his 290-278-221/789. Smirnoff had nothing to compete with that, losing totals by over 400 pins.

Eric Snow had a very nice 266-248/730 series to lead Thread-

works to a 4-1 victory over Crown Royal. Dave Schiada bowled well also, shooting a 236-258/707 for the Crown team, but he didn’t have enough help on this night.

Century 21—My Real Estate took advantage of Bobby Cam-pagnale’s 278-246-265/789 series to win four games from Los Al-tos Trophy. The four wins still only improves them to 6-9 for the round, and they’ll need a lot more weeks like that to get back into the hunt. Joe Jimenez added 678 to help Bobby out. Matt Mosley led Los Altos Trophy with 250/682.

DV8 got a sweep from the Gym W.R.A.T.T. Fitness group on the final pair. Kurt Arakaki led the way with 256/696.

In the matchups involving round winners, as they battle for total wins which will determine seeding in the playoffs, Keystone Lanes was threatening to run away with it, opening up an 8 game lead heading into Monday. And, after the first two games they had in-creased that lead to 10 by beating Western Pacific. The Western Pacific team came back big in the third game though, winning by enough to take totals and win the match, 3-2. May not seem like much, but those three wins keep them within striking distance with five weeks to go. The pair wasn’t as high scoring as the others. Jonathan Huff of Keystone Lanes led the way with 243/682. Raul “Spanky” Rosales of Western Pacific added 238/669.

In a much higher scoring match, Sysco took three out of five from Parkin’s Bowling Supply. With the three wins, Sysco re-mains in third place, one behind Western Pacific for 2nd. Sysco won the first game by a wide margin. Parkin’s came back to win the next two, but couldn’t make up the difference for totals. Paul Barraco and Gabriel Martinez, of the Sysco team, led the pair with matching 710’s. Dave Kovach was the top player for Parkin’s with 255/708.

DeeRonn Booker took the first sidepot of the night with his 290 game. The game #2 Superpot was won by Michelle King. Her 279 game earned her $207. Game #3 went to Ramiro Garcia for his 289.

The 289 by Ramiro Garcia earned him the Financial Advisors Pot as well, for another $200. Kevin Gagnon was second with 279 to earn him $100.

We go back to the grind next week, as the round #4 pattern will be on the lanes. GJC and Bowlium will square off on the top pair, with quite a few teams right behind them after this week’s splits by the top teams. Come down to check it out on Monday at 8:30 p.m. Only a few weeks left to root for your favorite teams.

DOWNEY — It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough as Threadworks moved into 1st place in Round 5 by sweep-ing past The Professional Approach 5-0. The US Open pat-tern was playing especially tough tonight as most teams struggled. Paul Varela led the charge to the top, as he fired a very nice 604 series to lead the sweep. Danny Ly led Power House Video Games to a sweep of their own, as they took down Blizz Yogurt 5-0. Danny shot 625, while Greg Neuer led Blizz with 581. Team DV8 is once again in contention for the round lead, as Sam Hitchcock winged his way to 242/623 and led DV8 to a 4-1 win over Linder Insurance.

Linder was paced by Kurt Arakaki 592 and Kevin Val-monte 591. In the best scoring match of the night, Pino’s Pizza prevailed 3-2 as they held off Alhambra Coin Center to win Team Totals by 13. Both teams bowled well, finishing as #1 and #2 scoring teams for the night, and their pair was 250 pins higher than any other two teams combined scoring for a pair. Leading the way for Pino’s was Ramon Torres 627 & Leonard Ruiz 600, while Alhambra was led by Doug Kempt 660 & Steve Gaucin 608. Herzog Insurance took a 4-1 win over the PJ-less Los Altos Trophies team as Mikey Villarreal shot 625 for the winners, while Top Dog for the night went to Los Altos’ Buddy Lucas with a very fine 670.

In the roll off team matches, it was Erickson Foods once again losing the first two games, only to come back strong in Game 3 and not only win the game, but Team Totals. Er-ickson pulls within 2.5 games of holding the #1 seed with the 3-2 win, as nobody managed to shoot 600 series, Herbert

Jones led the way for Keystone Lanes with 589, while Jason Buenviaje shot 563 for Ericksons. Charlie Kinstler shot 614 to lead SYSCO to a 5-0 sweep of Forest Lanes who strug-gled all night to catch SYSCO. Mason Man O’Lantern Sher-man topped Forest with 589. American Harvest Vodka out shot CASAMIGO’S Tequila and won 4-1 as Kevin Jones rolled 588, while Vernon Adams topped the Tequila team with 565. Mike Jennings shot 594 to lead Tifco Industries to a 4-1 win over BOWLIUM, who had the pair’s high series, Craig Stevens with 623. Matt Mosley powered his way to 255 & 638 to lead Cook’s Bowling Supply to a 5-0 sweep over J.A.T. DeeRonn Booker led the Junior Amateur Tour team with 549. In the final pairing, it was GJC Services win-ning 3 points as Juan Zavala topped his squad with 511.

Sidepot winners were Game 1 – Sam Hitchcock 242 Game 2 –Jason Buenviaje 226 however the Financial Advi-sor’s pot was won by Buddy Lucas 225 for $240 with Leon-ard Ruiz Jr. 2nd place with 223 for $100. Game 3 Super Pot went to Mikey Villarreal 255, quite the contrast from last week where you needed 11 strikes or more to win. The TRUE ANCHOR award goes to a new winner, Barry Couch Jr. collected the honors with a 3 game set of 361.

One more week on the dreaded US Open shot to try and move into the Round Lead, improve your standing, or move up the ladder in the Roll Off seedings. I’m sure most can’t wait for May to get here, since we will be finished with this pattern. Hope to see you all down at Del Rio next Monday in Downey. Have a blessed week everyone!
