Old Fashioned Independence Day Celebration Tuesday, July 4 from 11am to 4pm

Travel back in time at Wilder Ranch State Park on Tuesday, July 4, to experience an Old Fashioned Independence Day Celebration! Meet us at the apple orchard in front of the Highway 1 tunnel at 11:45am to join the parade. Bring a musical instrument or noisemaker, dress in early 1900s costume. Activities include children’s crafts area, live big-band music, living history demonstrations, historic speeches and flag raising. Food and drink available for sale, or bring a picnic lunch. Geology Walk Sunday, July 16 at 1pm Join docent Robert on a Geology Walk on Cove Beach, uncovering geologic history on this one-mile, one-hour stroll along Cove Beach. Self-Guided Seal Walks Daily, between 8:30am and 3:30pm (Natural Preserve closes at 5pm) Stroll over sand dunes, enjoy beautiful ocean views, and gain a unique opportunity to view a large colony of Northern elephant seals on this 3-mile, 2.5-hour self-guided trail! Visit the female elephant seals as they return to shore to molt, or shed their fur, in this annual excursion. Additionally, young pups are still ashore from the winter breeding season. Layered

Walk is free; day-use vehicle fee is $10. Entrance to the reserve for your self-guided walk requires a free permit that can be obtained at the entrance station, or the Visitor Center. Please contact the park at 650-879-2025 for further information. If you need mobility assistance, you can request a volunteer-led equal access tour. You will board our accessible van and get a ride to our wheelchair-accessible boardwalk. A volunteer(s) will accompany you to the two seal-viewing decks, explain the Northern elephant seal natural history, the history of the park, and answer questions. Reservations are required. Big Basin’s Fourth of July Weekend Celebration and Talent Show! Saturday, July 1 at 7pm

Come celebrate Independence Day with a campfire, sing-a-long and talent show! If you have a skit, poem, song or a talent you’d like to share, sign up at headquarters in advance. All presentations should be appropriate for all ages. Acts should be only 3-5 minutes in length. Participants need to arrive promptly at 7 p.m. Fire lighting and marshmallows (we provide the sticks and marshmallows!) at 7 pm; program begins at 7:30 pm. Event is free; parking is $10. The oral storytelling tradition comes to life with the ancient redwood forest as a backdrop. Join us in our historic campfire center for all age’s performances by South Bay Storytellers. Listen to a world of animal songs and stories during Nature Tails. Sit back and experience an old-fashioned evening steeped in the oral tradition, as our guest storytellers weave their yarns in our historic amphitheater for the Campfire.

You’ll discuss forests, flowers and fires on a six-mile, 3.5-hour hike. This somewhat strenuous ascent will reward you with ocean views on a clear day. Bring water, lunch and good hiking shoes. Volunteer with the Trail Crew Saturday, July 8 at 9:30am Since 1969, the Big Basin Volunteer Trail Crew has helped make it possible for others to safely enjoy the beauty of our park. The Trail Crew meets the second Saturday of each month, rain or shine. A typical workday lasts until mid-afternoon. Please bring your own work gloves, lunch and water. Join Docent Steve Stolper as we climb the Meteor Trail through the trees, gaining 600 feet before emerging at Ocean View Summit. After a relaxed lunch, we descend back into the forest and return to headquarters. Bring at least one liter of water, lunch, snacks, and appropriate clothing. This hike runs rain or shine.
