John F. Szabo, City Librarian of the Los Angeles PublicLibrary, will lead a discussion of our one conference book. On the morning of April 28, 1986, a fire alarm sounded inthe Los Angeles Public Library. The fire was disastrous: itreached two thousand degrees and burned for more thanseven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it hadconsumed four hundred thousand books and damagedseven hundred thousand more. Investigators descendedon the scene, but more than thirty years later, the mysteryremains: Did someone purposefully set fire to the library--and if so, who? In The Library Book, Susan Orlean chronicles the LAPL fireand its aftermath to showcase the larger, crucial role thatlibraries play in our lives; delves into the evolution oflibraries; brings each department of the library to vivid life;studies arson and attempts to burn a copy of a bookherself; and reexamines the case of Harry Peak, the actorlong suspected of setting the fire.
