After being abducted as a child by his father and taken to Mexico, a U.S.-born man could soon be re-united with his mother after show-ing up near San Diego.David Amaya Barrick, 37, was ar-rested last month while attempting to cross into the United States with a group of undocumented immi-grants. While he was freed after convincing authorities that he was an American citizen and contacting his mother for the first time since he was abducted in 1979, he soon disappeared again.

Amaya resurfaced a few days later at the Iglesia de Cristo Mineste-rios Llamada Final in San Diego where church officials are trying to reunite him with his 60-year old mother, Kathy Amaya, who lives in Wisconsin.“We are going to find a way to get him to his family,” said Pastor Freddy Rivas. “The grace of God brought him to our shelter and the grace of God will get him to his family.”Taken in 1979 from Chicago by his father, Barrick grew up in the north-central Mexican state of San Luis Potosi with his paternal grandpar-ents, seeing his father only a few times before moving to Monterrey

to study music.“My father told me my mother had left me abandoned and orphaned,” Amaya told NBC 7 while speaking through an interpreter, as he does not speak English. “I don’t know my mother, and I find out she’s been looking for me for 30 years, and I have the longing to meet her for the first time.”Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents found Amaya with a number of undocumented immi-grants crossing the border about a mile east of the Pacific Ocean. While in detention he told Bor-der Agents that he was born in a Chicago hospital and that he had been robbed of his money and

identification before entering the United States.Speaking through a translator, Amaya was finally able to get in touch with his mother and Border Patrol agents found his original birth certificate.“When the Border Patrol agents told me they found my mother, I could not believe it. I started cry-

ing,” Barrick recounted in an inter-view with Reuters on Tuesday. “I arrived in San Diego with nothing, nothing, and now I have a family.”He is staying at the church until he can be reunited with his mother. We talked to her this morning and she was so happy,” Rivas said. “She kept saying, ‘After 34 years, I’m going to see my baby.’”

Growingly Popular Pope Francis Could Be Target of Mafia Hit, Italian Prosecutor Claims

COMMUNITY

Pope Francis is making the Italian mafia “very nervous” – and there are concerns they could come after him.

A leading Italian anti-mob prosecutor warned this week that Pope Francis could get whacked by one of the European country’s no-torious mafias as the reforms in the Catholic Church he’s proposed have made the gang-sters uneasy.Nicola Gratteri, a state prosecutor in the south-ern Italian region of Ca-labria, said that the ‘Ndrangheta is not happy with Pope Francis’ proposed reforms to combat cor-ruption in the Church, which for decades has faced allegations of collusion with the southern Italian crime family.“I cannot say if the organization is in a position to do something like this, but they are dangerous and it is worth reflecting on,” Gratteri said, according to the Washington Post. “If the godfathers can find a way to stop him, they will seriously consider it.”

The ‘Nhdrangheta is an organized crime family similar to the Sicil-ian mafia and based out of the Calabria region of Italy. It is esti-mated that the ‘Ndrangheta earns between $30 billion and $50 billion annually, mostly from drug traffick-ing and pirated merchandise. While not as infamous as the Cosa Nostra is in the United States, the ‘Nhdrangheta – which operates through small, individual groups instead of the mafia’s pyramid structure – is arguably more im-portant to Europe’s drug trade as

80 percent of the cocaine entering the continent’s market come through docks in Calabria, Italian officials estimated back in 2004.

For decades, Gratteri said, the ‘Nhdrangheta have benefited from its dealings with the Church, by laundering money and making in-vestments with the complicity of the church.

Your family, your health, your life—any amount of smoking can harm them. Smokefree Español is here to help.Although Hispanic Americans currently have among the lowest smoking rates as compared to other ethnicity groups, smoking remains a serious problem in this community. Roughly 5 million His-panic Americans smoke, and lung cancer is the leading cause of can-cer deaths among Hispanic men, and the second leading cause of death among Hispanic women. As this community continues to grow, so does the impact from smoking. To address this important issue, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) presents Smokefree Español (es-panol.smokefree.gov), an online resource created specifically for Hispanic Americans who want to quit smoking or know someone who does.

Smokefree Español provides a wealth of free, culturally relevant resources… all in Spanish. Here you’ll find evi-dence-based approaches on how to quit and the latest sci-ence on the effects of tobac-co addiction. Plus, there’s information about commonly misunderstood topics, such as secondhand smoke and quit smoking medications. The website is a roadmap for quitting. Tailored to the unique needs of Hispanic smokers, the website con-tains short articles that pro-vide quit smoking advice, steps, and tips. Content is tailored to where the user is in the quit pro-cess, from just thinking about quit-ting to remaining smokefree. Other resources include interac-tive checklists and quizzes, advice on providing social support to a

loved one who is quitting smoking, and the SmokefreeTXT en Espa-ñol text messaging program, a free mobile platform that provides 24/7 quit smoking advice and support. Smokefree Español also provides real-time quit smoking support and information through Twitter and Pinterest.

National College Resources Foundation Honor Women of Distinction at Winter Wonderland Gala Affair

Eva Longoria To Produce TV ShowAbout Comedian Erik Rivera

The National College Resources Foundation producers of the Black College Expo will sa-lute women of distinction trailblazers in the community on Friday, December 6 at Winter Wonderland Gala Affair being held at Cali-fornia African American Museum, 600 State Drive, Los Angeles. The event will be hosted by 94.7 FM The Wave on-air personality, Pat Prescott and commences at 7:00 p.m.

The Winter Wonderland Gala Affair will honor Brenda Ross-Dulan (Wells Fargo), Lisa Cagnolatti (Southern California Edison), Rossina Gallegos (Union Bank), Carolyn Williams (The Gas Company), Alva Mason (Toyota Motor Sales), Rebecca Osborne (Le Chic Fashions), and Veronica Kummerfeldt (Aanimo, LLC). National College Resources Foundation (NCRF) founder and chair, The-resa Price stated, “NCRF and our special women of distinction honorees share the philosophy of building a better life through work and education.” “This salute is so fit-ting because they have all been a champion of our youth for so long. All seven women

have been instrumental for years in providing funds and raising dollars to help NCRF and the Black College Expo continue to provide services to the community,” added Price.

In addition to honoring, Cagnolatti, Ross-Dulan, Gallegos, Osborne, Adams-Mason, Williams and Kummerfeldt, the gala affair will feature a special musical tribute from R&B sensation Jon B. For additional information, please call the National College Resources Foundation at (909) 396-7722.

Eva Longoria is one busy mujer! According to Deadline, Longoria’s produc-tion company, UnbeliEVAble Entertain-ment, has sold two projects: a half-hour comedy to NBC and a soap opera style drama to Lifetime. The untitled comedy show will be based upon the life and stand up of comedian Erik Rivera, and will be “reminiscent of ABC’s The George Lopez Show.” Writer Peter Murrieta of Welcome to the Family has also been brought on to the show.Rivera tweeted the news on Friday, post-ing a picture of him, producer Eva Longo-ria, and writer Peter Murrieta. The caption read: “Latinos at every position #History.”Up-and-coming comedian Rivera is half Puerto Rican and half Guatemalan. In 2007, the Pace University alum won “Best New Comic” at the Latino Laugh Festival. He’s also made appearances on MTV, The

Tonight Show with Jay Leno, NUVOtv, and Comedy Central.

In 2009, The Ameri-can Recovery and Reinvestment Act increased Supple-mental Nutrition As-sistance Program (SNAP) benefits – commonly known as food stamps — by 13.6 percent, as a way to bring relief to struggling Ameri-cans during the eco-nomic recession. But on November 1 of this year the increase expired, return-ing SNAP benefits to pre-recession levels. The program cut will affect roughly 4 million Californians, many of them children. Young people with the youth Merced, Calif.-based reporting project We’Ced discussed the importance of food assistance programs in their own lives, and how they foresee the change affecting their families.

Natalie Salas:My mother is a single parent looking for work and has little to no family. Without SNAP or EBT we would struggle more than we already do. I would probably start trying to find other ways to help support my fam-ily, other than working the little odd jobs I do now.

I see people around me who have jobs but still don’t make enough to survive. We read an NPR report that says 3.8 million people will be left without food assistance when

the SNAP cuts go through. Just think of all those people that may have to resort to drastic measures to support their families.

Alyssa Castro:When I heard about SNAP being reduced, I immediately thought of my 10-year-old niece, my six-year-old nephew and three-year-old niece. My sister supports a family of five with a minimum wage job and the help of food stamps. She already is required to report her income, and on a good month when she’s earned a bit more money, her food stamps are reduced.

Thinking of all the other three-year-olds, working mothers or any of the other 3.8 mil-lion people that may be affected, is scary. I feel my sister’s family and the people I care about will be greatly affected. I’m not taking into consideration SNAP fraud right now, because I think the amount of fraud is a lot less than the families that truly need it.

The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligations secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of this Notice of Trustee’s Sale is estimated to be $383,037.91 (Estimated), provided, however, prepayment premiums, accrued interest and advances will increase this figure prior to sale. Beneficiary’s bid at said sale may include all or part of said amount. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept a cashier’s check drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan asso-ciation, savings association or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the California Financial Code and authorized to do busi-ness in California, or other such funds as may be acceptable to the Trustee. The property offered for sale excludes all funds held on account by the property receiver, if applicable. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bid-ding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bid-der at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title in-surance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this in-formation. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call Priority Posting and Publishing at 714-573-1965 for information regarding the Trust-ee’s Sale or visit the Internet Web site address listed below for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file num-ber assigned to this case, CA05001778-13-1.
