The statistics contained in these rankings are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems Inc. (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and totalaccuracy. A dagger (†) indicates that a stallion has been pensioned, an asterisk (*) that he has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere, a number sign (#) that he did not stand in California in 2012 but is standing in the state in 2013,a double dagger (‡) that he is not standing in California in 2013 but will stand in the state in 2014 and in that he is a freshman sire. In all cases, a sire will remain in the rankings until the year after his last California foals are two-year-olds. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates only.

He works tirelessly to educate legislators and the public about the welfare of rodeoanimals in an effort to promote and protect the sport of rodeo.

Along with other supporters, Fox also represented theNDOC bill in the California Legislature and protected itfrom unwanted modifications when it went to committee tobe considered for permanent passage. After working withother NDOC volunteers to successfully guide Californiainto becoming the second state to pass the NDOC in perpetuity, Fox continues to support the national crusade bypromoting display of the NDOC flag at an untold number ofrodeos and western related events in California and Nevada, including the California State Fair Rodeo. Heoften arranges to have rodeo royalty carry the NDOC flag at major rodeos and he provides NDOC details to rodeo announcers around the country in the form of scripts to be shared with the public. Fox also enlisted a campaign volunteer in Nevada, providing him with pertinent NDOC information, in order to secure a proclamation from the Governor of Nevada in 2012. Bob Fox goes out of his way to ensure the NDOC receivesphotos of the flag flying or being presented at these rodeos and that the NDOC organization receives positivepublicity in quality publications such as Pro Rodeo SportsNews, thus helping others to learn about the campaign and furthering the NDOC mission to preserve pioneer heritage and promote cowboy culture.—From National Day ofthe Cowboy

Many horse owners don’t think about equine stereotypicbehaviors until they own a cribber, a stall walker, a weaver,or a horse that passes his time with any abnormal behavior. But these stereotypies are more important than some mightthink: They could indicate compromised equine welfare.Recently, Chilean researchers set out to evaluate the preva-lence and factors associated with stereotypies and otherundesired behaviors in a population of racehorses.

Tamara Tadich, DrVetSci, of the Universidad Austral deChile, in Valdivia, and colleagues recently camped out attwo Chilean racetracks to evaluate the prevalence of stereo-typies and other abnormal behaviors in stalled Thoroughbredracehorses. Tadich said that while the Chilean horse racingindustry is growing, “there are no policies in relation to thehousing and management of these horses, which is importanttaking into account that … racehorses in Chile spend theirentire competitive lives housed at the racetrack yards.”

Compiling data on the prevalence of abnormal behaviorin these racehorses will likely provide important informationregarding how their housing and management practicesimpact their welfare, she said.

Tadich and colleagues closely observed 743 Thoroughbredracehorses of varying ages and sexes at two racetracks inSantiago, Chile (417 horses at Racetrack A and 326 atRacetrack B). They recorded detailed information about thehorses—including age, sex, bedding type, feeding protocol, training routine, and how much social contact they had withother horses (none, visual, or visual and tactile)—in additionto recording any stereotypic or abnormal behavior and anymethods used to prevent or impede those behaviors.—continued at www.theHorse.com, By Erica Larson, News Editor

Nestled in rollinghills adjacent to thehorse-related commu-nity of SantaTheresita, you willfind one of the oldestand most beautifulhomages to the Thor-oughbred in this state,California Thorough-bred Ranch.

Now in its fourthdecade of operation, the ranch was builtfrom the ground up byJack and Susie Farmerwho still own thebeautiful facility andlive right on the premises. Once an abandoned alfalfafield, the ranch is a striking portrayal of early Californiaarchitecture, right down to the adobe and mission-styleconstruction of the barns and office complex.

The main barn contains stalls for 40 horses intraining and the foaling barn comes equipped withclosed circuit television monitors that are linked up tothe farm manager’s office and residence 24 hours a day.Newborns are kept in stalls with their dams for the first36 hours of life and monitored closely. After that, theyare moved outdoors to grassy paddocks and pastures. The region’s temperate climate allows for horses to liveoutdoors year-round, and the ranch’s pastures rangefrom two acres to almost 50 and follow the contours ofthe foothills.

To date, more than 200 stakes winners have beenfoaled and raised on the ranch’s green fields. Others, like last year’s Eclipse champion juvenile colt ValidPoint, were brought to the ranch as yearlings for break-ing and schooling. California Thoroughbred Ranchalso has an excellent reputation as a training center. It

offers five round pens,an indoor ridingarena and a scenicuphill gallop thatwinds its way throughthe facility. There arealso two treadmillsand a swimming pool, where lay-ups canregain their condi-tioning without riskof further injury.

The ranch is hometo two of California’sfinest stallions. SuperDad is the sire of 22graded stakes winnersand countless other

stakes performers. His champion daughter Daddy’s LittleGal captured last year’s Cal Cup Juvenile Fillies and thisyear’s grade I Santa Anita Oaks. Moneymaker was foaledat the ranch and now stands at stud here. This gradedstakes winner of nearly $400,000 has thrust himself intothe national spotlight when his son Hayburner capturedthis year’s Travers Stakes at Saratoga. Winner of theWood Memorial and second in both the Kentucky Derbyand Preakness Stakes, Hayburner now has earnings over$1 million. The Cal-bred is now pointing for theBreeders’ Cup Classic.

Farm manager Bob Trainer has more than 30 yearsof experience in this business and gives your horses thepersonal care and attention they deserve. Assistantmanager and yearling trainer Steve Winner also hasmany years of veterinary experience, although thefarm’s main vet lives just down the road and is on call24 hours a day, especially during the busy foaling sea-son. Visitors are welcome and encouraged to come andtour the facilities. Also visit their impressive website atwww.Califthoroughbredranch.com.

Compared to last week: All classes of hay traded mostly weak. Thunderstorms moved into the state this week bringing monsoonal typerains, greatly reducing buyer demand and trading activity due to decreased hay quality. According to the US drought monitor 98 percent ofthe state was classified in the moderate to severe drought category. According to the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) the

2013 January-May period is the driest on record (since 1920). DWR also states water supplies for most areas of the state are expected to be sufficient for the summer months. With one dramatic exception, the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, where many farmers

will receive significantly reduced supplies of irrigation water, both due to dry weather and Delta pumping restrictions to protect sensitive fishspecies. There are some reports of farmers abandoning their alfalfa fields to direct all of their water to fruit and nut trees. All prices reported
