As most of you are preparing for your 2012 races, the California Triathlon volunteers have been very busy for the fi rst two months of the New Year. We met with Mayor Bill Bogaard of Pasadena and Congressman Adam Schiff to gain support for California Triathlon.

We have joined eff orts with Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) to create hats that will be available in March. All proceeds from these hats will go directly to CAF.

We are also excited to have many of our volunteers travel down to Oceanside for the Ironman 70.3 California to support the triathlon in the fi rst transition.

I am happy to announce the return of the Wednesday Rose Bowl bricks and the addition of Tuesday bricks at Griffi th Park and Th ursday bricks in San Dimas in March. Most importantly, we are all very excited to Play, Train, and Race together. - Mike Cruz-Herrera, President, California Triathlon

“My fi rst triathlon was 1988 or ’89, yes I’m that old, at the Bonelli Olympic Distance triathlon. Th e swimming was a breeze, my cycling was somewhere south of poor and the run after trashing my legs was painful. I did; however; rock the course (as most did back then) in a SWEET pair of full-on bun hugger speedo’s. Ah, the good old days!” | Darrell Myrick

“I had been cross-training, due to an overuse injury from running too many consecu-tive marathons. Once I was given the go-ahead to start running again, I thought I should put all that cross-training to good use. Th e date 10-10-10 was coming up and I fi gured, what better day to “tri” something new. Janet Uribe and I completed the “Day at the Beach” in Redondo Beach that morning. Despite all the time I spent at the RBAC pool, I had a very diffi cult time getting time completing the swim. Who knew open-water swimming was so diff erent?! But, I couldn’t DNF only 100m into my fi rst tri, so I fl ipped over and completed the swim on my back. What a wonderful sense of accomplishment crossing the fi nish line that morning! Now, I am hooked and am training for my fi rst Half Ironman this summer. “ | Anne Rogers

Time I raced... QUESTIONS? HELLOS?

My fi rst race was long beach triathlon last October. I was nervous because it was my fi rst race. I felt GREAT when I fi nished and my fi rst reaction was, “I want to do another one!” | Lisa Yeh

ATHLINKS

Those of us who have raced a while have heard this expression. If you’re new to triathlon, read the fi rst line again.

On the day before your big race, all decisions about the equipment you use, the nutrition strategy you follow, and the pacing you execute should already be fi nalized. Resist the temp-tation to slap new aerobars on your bike, use a new super-gel you got at the race expo, or set a blistering pace out of transition to impress the cheer-ing crowds. You’re gambling that the change will propel you to a better performance. It might, but there is also a chance your deviation from the tried-and-true will have adverse con-sequences. Th e aerobars might come loose or cause the untrained muscles in your back or neck to spasm, the su-per-gel could give you super-cramps, and setting out at your open 5km run on your 10km run leg could leave you walking into the fi nish shoot which won’t impress anyone. Take the time to work out the kinks of your race day plan during your regular training so you can have confi dence in your race day plan.

While much emphasis is placed on avoiding last minute changes that can derail all the work you’ve put in to prepare yourself for race day, there is a time for change, and certain changes should be made weeks or months out from your top priority race.

Ctip

COACH CRAIG

“Don’t try anything new on race day”

Th ese changes are things like:

Coaching:Are you planning on working with a coach or trying a new plan? New PR’s are the result of months of structured training and condition-ing.

Equipment that changes the way you train/race:New bike or run equipment that biomechanically alters the way you ride or run requires your body to adapt physiologically or the equip-ment may need to be fi ne-tuned or re-thought. New devices like heart rate monitors or bike power meters have a learning curve for you to ef-fectively use the new device.

Daily Nutrition:Make signifi cant changes to your daily diet, whether for weight loss or performance, early in the year when race performance isn’t at stake.

One of my favorite expressions is, “If you train on pizza and beer, you should race on pizza and beer.” Stick with the foods you know leading up to a race.

You prepare the whole season (or many seasons) for a peak race per-formance. Wait until next season to try that new super-gel.

Remember to sign up with Athlinks, the largest and most complete results database for endurance races on the planet. It is a great way for future and current race participants to receive and provide input and advice relative to any races. It will also show the popularity of certain races on the calendar in the event you want to try something new. Ath-links added over two million results for thousands of endurance races including running (road races, track and fi eld, cross country), triathlon, swimming, cycling (TTs and crits), mountain biking and more! It is easy to sign up. Simply go on the site at Atlinks.com, sign up and it’ll manage a race profi le history. You can also add California Triathlon to the group.

We are always looking for volunteers! Not only do volunteers get to support CalTri members, our volunteers get invited to exclusive volunteer-only events, as well as entered into volunteer-only raffl es for great prizes. Th ese volunteer raffl es will be held each time Cal Tri has a raffl e. Th ere are so many ways to get involved.

Race Volunteers:Pitch in on race day with CalTri. Th is could mean handing out water and food at an aid station, cheering for race participants or handing out medals with your fellow Cal Tri members. Generally takes about 2 – 5 hours, depending on the event.

Race Coordinators:Duties include fi nding and organizing volunteers by sending out emails, posting on Facebook and serving as a liaison between the race offi cials and your volunteer team. Th is generally takes a couple of hours spread out over the course of 2-3 months, plus volunteering on race day.

Race Committee: Th is involves reaching out to race directors of races on our race calendar via email or phone and negotiating discounted race fees. Th is is ongoing, but takes only a few hours over the course of 3-4 months.

Volunteer Coordinators: Volunteer coordinators manage volunteers no matter where they are – either at races, social events, training or marketing. Th ey also ensure that we reward our volunteers for their time!

For questions or additional information, please email [email protected] stating how you would like to get involved or visit us at: http://www.volunteersignup.org/H7HBB.
