FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Carers, Community Members, Staff and Students We are now almost half way through the term and by now all students should be well settled and into regular routines. In class regular warm-ups in literacy and maths help reinforce learned concepts and move information into their long term memory. It is important that students arrive to school on time every day so that they don’t miss out on the literacy warm-ups. Regular reading at home and everyday maths help to reinforce the work that students are doing in class. For the past 2 weeks a group of dedicated students have been training for the swimming carnival on Wednesday and Friday mornings before school. We currently have a squad of about 38 and new members are still welcome to join. Mr Wall and Mr Grimma are seeking more year 4 and 5 boys in particular. The swimmers enjoy a well-earned breakfast at the Breakfast Club when they return to school. Last week we held our first meeting of the School Board. We welcome Dean Gurr as the new Chair of the board. The board meets once a term and oversees the running of the school. This year we start our three year business cycle and look forward to the continued development and success of the school. I would like to recognise the contribution that Dan Boulton has made to the board as the Chair over the past six years. Our student numbers continue to grow. We now have 497 students which is about 15 more students than the same time last year. If enrolments continue to grow throughout term one we may need to consider a restructure in some years. I have been very fortunate in being awarded a Commonwealth Bank Teaching Award. This award recognises the fantastic achievements that our students have made in literacy and numeracy as a result of the hard work of all of the school community. There were nearly 450 nominations for the award nationally and 12 winners. Thankyou to all of the families that have paid their voluntary contributions. All contributions go directly towards resources that improve the learning program for students. If you would like to pay your voluntary contributions, please see the friendly office staff. Also please ensure that students have all of the requirements from the booklist. If you still require any items, everything is available through the front office. This week’s assembly will be presented by the student councillors and the Administration. We will be focusing on our four school values; Respect, Resilience, Perseverance and Compassion. Bunuru - Second summer (season of the adolescence) February - March
Bunuru is the hottest time of the year with little to no rain. Hot easterly winds continue with a cooling sea breeze most afternoons if you're close to the coast. Therefore, traditionally this was, and still is, a great time for living and fishing by the coast, rivers and estuaries. Because of this, freshwater foods and seafood made up major parts of the diet during this time of year.
Bunuru is also a time of the white flowers with lots of white flowering gums in full bloom, including Jarrah, Marri and Ghost Gums.
Another striking flower that is hard to go past is the female Zamia (Macrozamia riedlei). Being much larger than that of its male counterpart, the huge cones emerge from the centre of the plant with masses of a cotton wool like substance.
As the hot, dry weather continues the seed upon the cones change from green to bright red, indicating they're ripening and becoming more attractive to animals, particularly the emu, that will eat the toxic fleshy outer.

On the 16th of September last year four of our students were invited to a special writer’s workshop at the Art Gallery of WA. They were able to spend time with a published author who explored the art with them giving them writing tips and ideas. The author’s then helped the students’ to write their own piece. Each student was able to create a piece of writing which was then compiled into a booklet. Below is the piece completed by Briana Park. Look out in the next few newsletters for more great pieces of writing. It was great day and the students represented Calista wonderfully.

FERN TREE VALLEY

Listen to the flowing water. What a beautiful place this is. The wind is rustling through the trees making them dance. Look up at the sky and see the sun it is just about to rise. You can hear the creatures hiding in safe places. It looks like some trees are a brighter green than others but all are exquisite. There is a man hiking and making his way up the foggy but peaceful valley. He walks along and sees flowers just about ready to bloom. Hiking along he looks for a peaceful place to eat. He has not eaten or drank for hours. He lies by the flowing water on soft green grass and looks up at the bright blue sky. Broken twigs and fallen over trees have formed a bridge over the river. On the other side of the water you can see bright green mossy covered rocks. The sun starts to set over the flowing water. Then you realise what an amazing sunset with gorgeous colours red, orange and pink. Now the stars are starting to come out. And the sky is a clear dark
blue and you can clearly spot out the Southern Cross.

40KM SPEED LIMIT All road users are reminded of the 40km speed limit around the school in the mornings and afternoons. Please slow down, nothing is so urgent that it justifies exceeding the speed limit as you drive past the school. Also a reminder, please do not park on verges in and around the school as this is a fineable offence by the local Council.
BREAKFAST CLUB Just a reminder for students, breakfast club for 2017 is held in the breakfast club kitchen and is open every Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday 7.30 – 8.20am. A nutritious breakfast in a welcoming environment is available for all Calista students at no cost.
ALL FRUIT donations will be gratefully received to make their famous Lemon Butter. Please drop off at the front office.

GIRL GUIDES RECRUITING
IN KWINANA Kwinana Girl Guides are recruiting girls aged 5 to 11 years who want to try new things, make friends and enjoy the outdoors. The Girl Guides mission is to empower girls and young woman to grow into confident, self-respecting, responsible community members. Kwinana Possum Girl Guides are carrying out this mission with fun-filled first term that includes a range of activities, from outdoor play, to practical skills sessions and community service. The Unit, which meets Thursdays 4-6pm at the Kwinana Guide Hall, is currently enrolling new members for 2017.
