The Queen of Calitzdorp is radiant once more in the Klein Karoo PRESS RELEASE

THE QUEEN OF CALITZDORP IS RADIANT ONCE MORE IN THE KLEIN KAROO

Thanks to new management this over a century old establishment has a whole new lease on life having just completed a major renovation over

the last few years and being awarded with four stars by The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa.

The renovation project is one of the most significant changes to the guesthouse since the original founding, now boasting fifteen bedrooms,

eight in the main house and seven in adjacent annexes. The owners are committed to maintaining Calitzdorp's image as a world-class

destination, while keeping countryside values of a friendly, home-from-home atmosphere. This is evident in the renovation and subsequent

four-star grading achievement.

The bedrooms have been completely transformed. Not only do they have new lighting, solid wood furniture and high quality bedding, the

luxurious en-suite bathrooms also boast glass enclosed showers and the basins have granite vanity tops. All bedrooms feature fridges, air-

conditioning, overhead fans, 32” flat-panel televisions with HD DStv and complimentary wi-fi. Most have balconies with views over the adjacent

vineyards and the Nel’s river valley or over the town towards the Swartberg mountain range.

Inside the guesthouse the trendy lounge and more traditional dining room offer an interesting style contrast. The lounge has a modern feeling

whereas the dining room keeps the original furniture pieces which have been beautifully restored. Rich gold brocade drapes frame the wooden

sash windows and double doors throughout. A traditional bull-nose stoep roof surrounds the face of the building and the annex. The whole

experience is airy and cool, much needed during Klein Karoo summers.

One aim of the renovation was to implement up to date environmental standards. The establishment is now largely powered by solar panels

while the beautiful gardens are watered through grey and rainwater storage tanks. The latter being of particular importance in the semi-arid

Klein Karoo where all water is precious. Additionally a recycling initiative has been implemented as an outreach project in cooperation with one

of the residents in the nearby Bergsig community.

A new swimming pool and beautifully landscaped gardens complete the picture. The Queen, our namesake and logo, is a century old

eucalyptus tree which takes pride of position beside the annex and provides a resting place to many birds.

"The renovation has been a labour of love for me. I spent the first nine years of my life in Calitzdorp and lived in the original hotel, which was

owned by my family. It has been a long-term ambition of mine to restore and upgrade this hotel to reflect its full potential and beauty. I believe

that this renovation has helped me to achieve that. The Queen of Calitzdorp can now proudly claim its place as a world-class guesthouse”

Adrian Leuthold.

The Queen of Calitzdorp’s fifteen bedrooms offer accommodation for 30 – 34 people and includes secure parking for cars and tour busses.

Groenfontein Learning Centre

Science Literacy: The children have been busy in the term past experimenting with Gravity, air pressure and grasping the principles of aerodynamics. The pictures below show some of the learning fun:

Air Flow

Air Pressure

Try these fun things yourself.

Next Step: Next term we want to introduce the kids to electro-magnetism, make motors etc… If you have any magnets hanging around please give to Erina. Your help will be much appreciated. The Objective: The objective of the classes is to stimulate the kids so that they want to learn. What did these experiments teach the kids? Send your replies to Mike Horan at [email protected].

THE GROENFONTEIN KEEDZ

This student is blowing

through a straw into a

polystyrene cup. The

balloon stays attached to

the cup. The balloon is

not helium filled and

will drop the moment he

stops blowing.

In this experiment the glass is filled

with a 3rd water, a piece of plastic

placed on the tap. When you turn over

the glass holding the plastic and then

remove your hand the plastic does not

fall. If there is no water in the glass the

piece of plastic will fall.

In this experiment a small fire is lit in

the jar (a piece of tissue) and the

balloon held on the top. If you look

carefully you can see the balloon has

been forced into the top of the jar. In

fact if you lift up the balloon the jar

comes with it.

Thanks to Kannaland Municipality

Kannaland Municipality I would like to express my appreciation to both Mr Timmie and Mr Hoogbaard who attended to my query in respect of the hold up

with the road works in Queen Street. The following day I received emails and Visits to update me on the progress. I have always

received prompt replies and a resolution to any queries that I have had.

“the true story of a real fake” how fact can be more unbelievable than fiction….

New Rochelle, the 1960s. High schooler Frank Abagnale Jr. idolizes his father, who's in trouble with the IRS. When his parents separate, Frank runs away to Manhattan with $25 in his checking account, vowing to regain dad's losses and get his parents back together. By the age of 19 he has cashed $4,000,000 in bad checks in 26 states and successfully passed himself off as a Pan Am pilot, a pediatrician, and an attorney. And, from nearly the

beginning of this life of crime, he's been pursued by a dour FBI agent, Carl Hanratty. What starts as cat and mouse game becomes something akin to a father and son relationship.

A fabulous cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hawks, Christopher Walken, Martin Sheen and Amy Adams make this award winning movie a really entertaining evening out.

The war on Fruit flies

As the summer nears and the temperatures climb our old enemy

reappears. Fruit Flies. Last year we had reasonable success against

foreigner. Lets us all again get a bit xenophobic and kill them.

I put out some monitering stations and my count for this week ending

25 September 2015 was at the citrus trees 6 in a week and the ‘lekwart’

/ mulberry tree 26. Yes they usually say if you have 5 in a week you

do have big problems.

What can you do. Well we again sell the M3 stations costing R3 per

station at the Withoek Boerdery office. Contact Leanne at 044-2133

639 and join this war.

Lets pull together and extinguish this insect

In 1915 the Gamka-Oos Primary school opened. This year, 2015 – it

celebrates its centenary. One hundred years of successful hard work, with so

many schools around them closing down, one after the other. In 1918 there were outlying schools in Groenfontein, Buffelskloof,

Buffeljagsfontein, Gamka-Oos, Gamka-Wes, Huisrivier, Janfourieskraal,

Kruisrivier-Wes, Uitvlug, Warmbad en Warmwater. Sadly over the years most of the little schools have closed down. And today

how many remain?

Calitzdorp take note – so much is lost to history. Congratulations Gamka-Oos for achieving this amazing milestone. A great,

proud achievement! May the community supports your celebrations!

Bicycle Rentals at Tourism office

Great news, another improvement developed at Calitzdorp Tourism, adding to

our growing list of contributions.

Calitzdorp Tourism offers bicycles for rental. Rentals are based on a hour to

hour basis. Very important with regards to returns: the office close at 17:00

from Monday - Friday and at 13:00 on a Saturday. We are closed on Sundays, but arrangements can be made in advance.

Our bikes come with a helmet. They are perfect for exploring the town. Forget about the traffic and enjoy the town sights at your own pace, while breathing in

the rich culture of Calitzdorp. Our bikes are also ideal for the more challenging

trips. If you’re interested in exploring Calitzdorp’s natural surroundings then this bike’s for you. Last but not least: when hiring equipment you’re required

to pay a security cash deposit in case of damage/theft and a copy of your

identity book/passport (we will make the copy).

Security cash deposit: R100
