2.3Document ConventionsImportant safety warnings are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to persons or equipment. A warning identifies a possible hazard and explains what may happen if the hazard is not avoided. The warnings — in the form of Dangers, Warnings, and Cautions — must be followed at all times. These indications are flagged by use of the triangular alert icon (seen below), and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or damage and likelihood of occurrence.

Note: This note symbol alerts you to supplementary information.

Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided.

Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause minor personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided.

Danger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial prop-erty damage if the hazard is not avoided.

CALIX 244X SERIES GPON ONT HARDWARE INSTALLATION MANUAL4 - INSTALLING THE 244X ONT

4.1.1 ONT and UPS Site Guidelines

4.1.1.1 244x ONTThe Calix 244x Series GPON ONT uses a robust housing to protect the enclosed networking electronics. The product design accommo-dates a wide range of environmental extremes, including harsh winters, hot summers and associated snow and rain (refer to Weather-proofing the ONT for information about protecting the ONT from corrosion in coastal regions). However, as with all electronic equipment, there are operational limitations. Specifically, when in use, temperatures inside the ONT enclosure must remain between -40C to +55C (-13F to 131F), and relative humidity must be between 10% and 90% without condensation. Before the ONT is installed at a residence or business, consideration of an appropriate physical location is important: • The ONT must be mounted in an area with access to existing customer wiring and grounding. It must be located within 25 feet (or

100 feet with optional cable) of the indoor UPS.• Ideally, the ONT should be mounted on the side of the structure in a location where it is shaded from direct summer sunlight which

in some locations could raise the internal temperatures beyond the upper range of operating parameters. • Avoid locating the ONT on dark colored walls with southern exposures where thermal loads in direct summer sunlight can easily

exceed 150F. • If the ONT must be mounted on a dark colored wall, allow a gap of at least half an inch between the ONT and the wall, allowing air

to flow behind the ONT and cool the unit. A screen should be placed around the gap in such a way as to prevent bees, wasps and hornets from building a nest behind the ONT that would obstruct air flow.

• The ONT should be located in an area where it is out of direct water spray from irrigation or sprinkler system.

4.1.1.2 UPS The UPS must be indoors and within six feet of an AC outlet. The UPS must also be located within 25 feet (or 100 feet with optional cable) of the NID. This distance also includes the cable management.

CALIX 244X SERIES GPON ONT HARDWARE INSTALLATION MANUAL4 - INSTALLING THE 244X ONT

4.1.2 Preventing Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Damage

To prevent ESD damage to the ONT, observe the following guidelines:• Always wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap when handling the ONT and blades, ensuring that the strap makes ample contact with

your skin.

Remember that the wrist strap only protects the ONT from ESD voltages present on the body. ESD voltages can also be present on clothing and can cause ESD damage to the ONT.• Ground yourself by touching the metal part of the chassis if you do not have a wrist strap available.

4.1.3 Weatherproofing the ONTWhen required, apply Dow Corning® High-Vacuum Grease to the RJ -45 connectors used by the Ethernet cables and the RJ-11 connec-tors used to connect the station wire to the voice ports. This grease keeps all moisture out of the RJ-45 and RJ-11 connectors and pre-vents the connections from being shorted out by conductive corrosive solutions. Dow Corning® High-Vacuum Grease can be purchased from Calix. For grease application instructions refer to Connecting the Ethernet Cables and Connecting the Voice Ports.

If the ONT is touched or handled improperly ESD damage to the ONT can occur. Static voltages as low as 30 volts can dam-age circuitry. Make sure to observe all standard anti-static procedures when handling electronic equipment and components.

Note: Periodically check to make sure that the resistance value of the antistatic wrist strap is between 1 and 10 megohms.

4.1.4 Unpacking the ONT

Unpack the ONT using the following steps:

1. Inspect all packing containers. If any damage or other signs of mishandling is evident, immediately inform both the carrier and Occam Networks before proceeding.

2. Carefully remove the ONT from the container.

3. Examine the ONT and cables for signs of damage or other mishandling.

4. Check the packing list to verify receipt of all components. Contact Calix immediately to report any discrepancies.

4.2 Installing the UPSFollow the installation instructions that came with the UPS.

The distance between the UPS and the ONT is limited to 50 feet if the wire gauge used for the 12 V DC battery is 18 AWG or 100 feet if the power leads are 16 AWG. Install the loose cable with the colors in the same order from left to right based on the color codes of the wire used. Use the lower gauge (thicker wire) for the first two (left most terminals called out Red/Black below) terminals since these carry the power.

Static voltages as low as 30 volts can damage circuitry. Make sure to observe all standard anti-static procedures when han-dling electronic equipment and components.

Note: A pre-terminated power cable is available from Calix. You may also use an appropriate loose wire that is able to tolerate the exposure to external environment (for example, one that is UV resistant). A power connector is available from Calix as well, either individually or in lots of 100.

4.4 Grounding the 244x ONT

Calix recommends that you ground the ONT with an 8 AWG solid ground wire to the best earth ground available at the site according to standard telecommunications grounding practices with the goal of obtaining a ground resistance of 5 Ohms or less. You can ground the ONT directly to the home electrical ground, properly grounded metallic water pipe or to a solid copper ground rod at least six feet long in close proximity to the ONT.If you use a separate ONT grounding rod, the home must have a separate earth ground. Resistance between the home earth ground and ONT ground rod must be less than 25 Ohms.Use the following steps to ground the 244x ONT:

1. Assure power is disconnected from the chassis.

2. Locate the grounding lug, as shown in Figure 4-2.

Figure 4-2: Grounding Lug

For proper operation and equipment protection, the 244x ONT must be properly grounded according to NEC 830.100(D). If you are using shielded fiber optic subscriber drop cable, refer to section 4.5.1 Grounding a Shielded Fiber Optic Cable for information about how to ground the shield.

Page 24: Calix 244x Series GPON ONT Installation Guide · 2021. 6. 11. · The Calix 244x Series of Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) provide GPON fiber access termination for the B6 Broadband

4.5 Connecting the Fiber Optic Cable

Use the following steps to connect the fiber optic cable:

1. Route the drop fiber through the first access port from the left as shown in Figure 4-5.

2. Prepare the fiber, leaving 60 inches of buffer tube.

3. Secure the fiber to the ONT with the strength members (yarn-like material beneath the outermost jacket).

Figure 4-5: Routing Drop Fiber into the Chassis

When using shielded fiber optic subscriber drop cable, it is necessary to properly ground the shield as it comes out of the cable sheathing in the ONT. Since the metallic shielding provides an opportunity for lightning ingress, proper grounding is especially critical for both the safety of the 244x ONT's electrical components and of the personnel maintaining it. Refer to section 4.5.1 Grounding a Shielded Fiber Optic Cable.

To avoid damage to your fiber optic cables, do not bend the cables to a radius smaller than 1.5 inches (38 mm). Bending the cable farther than its minimum bend radius may result in increased attenuation or broken fibers.

5.3 Preventing Electrostatic Discharge DamageMany B6 and ONT components are sensitive to damage from electrostatic discharge (ESD). ESD occurs when electronic printed circuit cards are handled improperly and can result in intermittent or complete failures.

• Ensure that the B6 and ONT chassis are electrically connected to earth ground.• To safely channel unwanted ESD voltages to ground, wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap and ensure that it makes good skin contact.

Connect the clip to an unpainted surface at the rear of the chassis frame or if the rear of the chassis frame is not accessible, then remove the front bezel and attach the ESD strap to either of the ball studs used to secure the bezel in place. To properly guard against ESD damage and shocks, the cord and wrist strap must operate effectively.

• Always wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap when handling the B6 chassis and blades, ensuring that the strap makes ample contact with your skin. A non-insulated grounding banana jack is located on the upper right of the B6 chassis.

• If no wrist strap is available, ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal part of the chassis.

5.4 CE Mark QualificationThe Calix 244x Series GPON ONT has been tested to EN300386 as part of CE Mark qualification for Europe. The GPON ONT can be installed in Europe with CE Mark as long as a dedicated CE Certified Power supply or UPS provides the DC Power to the ONT. Further information on the CE testing or GPON ONT installation can be provided with request to Calix Customer Support.

Always follow ESD prevention procedures when handling the B6 and ONT.

For both equipment protection and user safety, periodically check the resistance value of the antistatic strap. The measurement should range from 1 to 10 Megaohm (Mohm).
