TopicsPapers from both the geophysical areas (chemical and physical oceanography, atmosphericsciences) and engineering areas (civil, mechanical, chemical, environmental and nuclearengineering) are encouraged to apply.Symposium topics include, but are not limited to:

• Laboratory and numerical studies on interfacial turbulence and air-water scalar transfer• Physical effects including wave breaking, bubbles, raindrops, buoyancy, and surfactants on air-

water scalar transfer• Advanced field observations of air-sea scalar exchange rates• Biological effects on scalar transfer at the air-water interface• Advanced measuring techniques for air-water scalar fluxg q• Environmental problems related to air-water scalar transfer• Remote sensing for large-scale air-water scalar transfer• Recent progress in global simulation and modeling of air-sea scalar exchange• Recent industrial problems related to air-water scalar transfer

*Scalar transfer includes both mass(gas) and heat transfer.

Symposium Locationy pThe symposium will be held May 17-21, 2010 at the Kyoto Garden Palace (http://www.hotelgp-kyoto.com/) located next to the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Kyoto had been the former capital ofJapan for 1200 years and is the seat of a number of historical temples, shrines, and othertraditional Japanese architecture and gardens. Kyoto is also known as the city where the KyotoProtocol was signed in 1997 to reduce CO2 emissions. Although Kyoto visitors can enjoy the citythroughout the year, May is one of the best periods to visit, since the weather is mild andcomfortable. One of the three major festivals in Kyoto, the Aoi (see the photo below), is held oncomfortable. One of the three major festivals in Kyoto, the Aoi (see the photo below), is held onMay 15, just two days before the symposium. All GTWS-6 participants are encouraged to enjoythese unique cultural experiences during their stay. More information about Kyoto is available athttp://kaiwai.city.kyoto.jp/raku/modules/english/index.php and http://www.kyotoguide.com/.
