Es el puerto más antiguo del sur de Chile. En tiempos de la conquista española, fue una bahía fortificada debido a los constantes ataques de piratas y corsarios de otros países. Se llegaron a construir 17 fuertes en todo el perímetro de la ciudades de Valdivia y Corral, entre ellos, el Castillo San Sebastián de la Cruz (centro de Corral), Fuerte San Luis de Alba (Amargos), Fuerte Niebla y el Castillo San Pedro de Alcántara (Isla Macera). El 22 de mayo de 1960 a las 15 horas, el sur de Chile fue sacudido por el Terremoto de Valdivia de 1960, de 9,5 grados en la escala de Richter. En la bahía de Corral, se formaron las más grandes olas del tsunami, 11 m de altura registrado en la ciudad de Corral. Actualmente Corral se caracteriza por una gran riqueza natural, con el importante Parque Nacional Alerce Costero — la cultura marina con la pesca, recolección de mariscos y frutos del mar.
