September 2015 Hey, Friends!
The signs for Fall are all around us. The cooler
temperatures this week, the beginning of football
season, Labor Day approaching are all reminders that
the season is changing.
September brings opportunity to begin again as
summer ends. God has opened up a new opportunity
of mission and outreach for us this Fall. The Pearl
Lower Elementary School is expanding its Pirate
Partners in Literacy Program. A Pirate Partner is a
caring adult who volunteers once or twice a week for
about an hour to assist children in kindergarten and
first grade with literacy. What a gift it is to invest
time with a child and help to bring that child up to
grade level! Our hope is that this proactive time will
help these children to be more successful in school
and, specifically, will help them to be reading on
grade level by the time they are in third grade. You
will find more details about this ministry in the next
column. Please pray for this new ministry. If God is
calling you to learn more about it, come to the
information meeting on September 14that Pearl Lower
Elementary School.
September also brings an opportunity to invite
our Friends, Relatives, Associates and Neighbors
(FRANS) to church. For the second year, we will
participate in the National Back to Church Sunday
on September 20. We will have an opportunity for
worship at 10:55 followed by a pot-luck lunch.
In 2014, over 26,400 churches participated in this
growing national movement. Once again we are
joining with other churches in Pearl to send invitation
postcards to all the households in the 39208 zip code.
Research shows that 82% of people said they
would attend church if someone they knew invited
them, but, only 2% of church-going people invite
someone to church in a given year. Your invitation
can make a difference—a difference that might have
eternal significance.
So, how will we invite our FRANS to church on
September 20? Here are some suggestions:
1. Ask God to put on your heart the names of 2 or 3
people who are unchurched or have not attended
church recently.
2. Pray that God will help you find the best
way to invite each person. Would that
person respond best to a phone call, e-mail,
text, card etc. Business card sized invitations
are available for your use at the exits to the
sanctuary.
3. Act on the opportunity that God will provide
you. Here’s an example of a way to invite —
“We/I would be honored to have you join
us/me for worship of Sept 20 at 10:55 at my
church McLaurin Heights United Methodist.
There will be lunch after worship, and I
would love for you also to be my guest at the
meal.”
4. If it seems appropriate, go a step further and
offer to pick your guests up or to meet them
at a designated spot so that you may sit
together.
I can’t wait to see how God will use us to share
his love in this new season. His opportunities are
abundant!
Blessings and peace,
Vicki

We have adopted this verse in Philippians because this
year for the youth will be dedicated to service and the
well-being of others.

We meet each Sunday at 9:45 for Bible study. Joey and
Becky Fontaine will teach about “Seeds of New Growth”,
from the New Testament book of Acts.
Wednesday and Sunday Nights
Come join us at 5:00 pm on Sunday nights and at 6:00
pm Wednesday nights for fun, learning and fellowship as
we grow closer to God.
Youth For Hire
During the next few months, leading up to our
international mission trip, if you have work that one or
several youth could do to help you (yard work, cleaning,
etc.) please contact Trey Fontaine. The youth want to
work for the money they receive for their mission trip.
Your support means a lot to the youth. If you can't
physically come to a fundraiser, you can always leave a
donation in the offering plate designated to the youth
fund. We rely on your weekly contributions and they will
become even more important as we try to raise funds for
our international mission trip in late December.

include 30 students. Volunteers are needed to commit to
filling bags and delivering them to the school each week.
This will require about two hours of time. There will be
a calendar for sign up. It would be a great project for a
Sunday School class or any other church group. You can
fill the bags at a time that fits your schedule. If you can
be a part of this Mission project or need more
information please contact Bobbie Roe at
601-939-6182 or [email protected]
