Dear Church Family,
We’re going somewhere!
Far too o@en, we view the local church as a staAc, unmoving
insAtuAon. We acknowledge that we are a family, but fall into the
trap of maintaining, repeaAng, and simply dropping the anchor in
the same old waters. Now, it’s certainly true that the Gospel and
the Bible never change. The message doesn’t evolve, change, or
grow; It’s sAll the “old, old story” that changes lives no maer the
generaAon, culture, or age in which we live.
But in terms of actually doing ministry together in our community,
we are not a staAc, unmoving insAtuAon. The local church is living,
breathing organism made up of individual, living members like you
and me. Since that is true, we must always be moving, assessing,
reconfiguring, shi@ing, and striving toward the goal—The
proclamaAon of the Gospel in our community and in our
generaAon.
This is not an amusement park ride in which we insert our money
and enjoy the ride. This is a cosmological task to which we give,
not only our money, but our whole lives in devoAon and service.
If there is one metaphor I like to use about the church, it’s a boat.
The local church is a big boat. It takes many people to make it go,
many people to operate all of the different mechanisms that make
it go. It needs a captain and other leaders. It needs workers in the
boiler room keeping the momentum going. The church is an “all
hands on deck” situaAon, and if we’re going to move and sail
through the rough waters of a lost world, we’re going to have to
be all in together. There’s simply no other way this is going to
work.
So I encourage you to get on board, to find a task, to follow the
orders of Jesus our Captain, and to serve with all of your might
with whatever the Lord has given you. If you’re not serving and
parAcipaAng in the great work of this church, let me know and I
promise I’ll help you find out what God has gi@ed you with and
we’ll find a way to plug you in. Ask your Sunday School teacher or
any commiee member or leader; We’ll point you in the right
direcAon.
In all things, let’s li@ one another in love and prayer. We’re on the
same team and we’re playing for the same prize. Will we always
agree? Of course not. But can we sAll move forward with one
common goal and purpose? Absolutely.
I’ll leave you with the words of my home church pastor, Dr. Randy
Sawyer who once said:
“Get on the boat or get off the boat; Just don’t shoot holes in the
boat.”
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Ma
