Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, This week has been a significant week at St Patrick’s College. On Monday, I met with the Non State Schools Accreditation Board review panel to discuss our accreditation. The meeting went well and the recommendation of the panel was to recommend accreditation for St Patrick’s College. As mentioned previously this is the process by which St Patrick’s College can operate as an accredited school in Queensland. During 2012 we will participate in the EREA school renewal process which will further examine our accreditation as a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice Tradition. On Tuesday, I was extraordinarily proud to be a member of the St Patrick’s College Community. At the AIC Track and Field Carnival the St Patrick’s athletes were outstanding in their performance. Similarly, the supporters were also very spirited as they cheered and encouraged their athletes. There were many outstanding performances on the day and I congratulate all athletes and their coaches. At the end of the day St Patrick’s College was placed third which is outstanding. Congratulations to all involved. Over the last few weeks the staff and Year 11 students have been participating in the process of selecting of the student leaders for 2012. Last week I announced the College Leaders for 2012 and the nominations for House Leaders will be finalised this week. I will announce the House Leaders for 2012 in next week’s Calling. Next week the Year 11 students and a number of staff will participate in the Leadership Camp at the Gold Coast. This is always a good experience and I am looking forward to a positive few days. Finally, I look forward to seeing many parents and families at Showcase on Friday night. It is a wonderful evening. I would ask that we are considerate of our neighbours regarding noise, parking and movement. Have a great week. CURRICULUM

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL CURRICULUM— CHRIS CAMPBELL

Students moving from Year 9 in 2011 into Year 10 in 2012 are required to make one subject selection. Throughout Year 9, all boys have completed the subject Society and the Environment. In Year 10, 2012, this subject splits into the two distinct areas of History and Geography. All students in Year 9 must select either History or Geography for 2012. To facilitate this process, we have set up an online selection process. All parents will have received an email explaining how this works. It is important that the selections are made by Friday 28 October. A reminder to boys in Year 10 that if they selected the TAFE Certificate 3 course known as “The Triple Treat” as one of their sub-jects for Year 11, it is not being offered by TAFE. This course combines hospitality and events management. An email will have been sent to boys and parents from TAFE. You will note on the email that TAFE is offering alternate certificate courses. I would suggest that students look to enrol in one of these courses, rather then look to withdraw from TAFE. I believe that all students who selected the TAFE option as one of their subjects for Year 11 have made the correct choice, as it is the most suitable direction for them.

Timetable arrangements for 2012 are almost final. Please note, that a number of boys who selected Graphics for Year 9 2012 were unable to be placed into the subject. Due to the large numbers still to complete the subject, Mr Celegato has programmed another Graphics class. As such, all students who chose the subject should now receive admission.

The decision to reschedule another Graphics class came after much discussion. I have written previously about a culture where students often look to move out of subjects, especially if they find them challenging. Creating the third graphics class was done because we are expecting that boys who have selected subjects will honour their selections by remaining in their chosen courses and work hard, even if the work becomes challenging at times.

Moving students to other subjects is often not practical due to class sizes and availability. Our timetable is very tightly structured. We are now at the end of Week 3. A reminder to all students, but especially Year 12s the time remaining for the year is ticking away. Where possible, I would advise that boys commence a process of revision. Final assessment will be on us before we know. Good luck.

As we draw closer to the end of the year I would like to dedicate this writing to our Senior class of 2011. It is hard to fathom that the end of the school year is in sight. This group of students that we've come to know as a community will be moving on. We as teachers have worked to not only teach skills, but establish re-lationships. I have journeyed for the past five years with most of these boys – through many ups and downs, happy and sad moments. The journey has been a good one – as a teacher, sport coach, campus minister and sometimes just someone they can have a chat to, I have cherished these moments, knowing at some point they will spread their wings and make it on their own. I saw these boys grow up in the past five years – setting and achieving goals one at a time, not only in the classroom, but on the sporting fields, cultural arena, and in their personal lives. Many of these boys were involved in the Ministry pro-grams – Paddies Van on a Thursday night, Decker Park and Humpybong barbeques, chocolate fundraisers, attending workshops, retreats,andMass,Indiaimmersion,Year5gardenproject–toomanythingstomentions.IwouldIliketothankeachandeveryonewhohaveinthepastyearscontributedtoourprogram.Thankyouforyourinvolvement,yourcareandaboveallyourkindnessandcommitment.Ibelievethattheyhavelearnedthevalueofservicetoothers,kindnessandcompassionandabovealltogiveofthemselves.Iamsurethatthesequalitieswillstandthemgoodintheyearstocome.Thisremindsmeofthestoryofthewisewoman’sstone.Awisewomanwhowastravelinginthemountainsfoundapreciousstoneinastream.Thenextdayshemetanothertravellerwhowashungry,andthewisewomanopenedherbagtoshareherfood.Thehungrytravellersawthepreciousstoneandaskedthewomantogiveittohim.Shedidsowithouthesitation.Thetravellerleft,rejoicinginhisgoodfortune.Heknewthestonewasworthenoughtogivehimsecurityforalifetime.Butafewdayslaterhecamebacktoreturnthestonetothewisewoman."I'vebeenthinking,"hesaid,"Iknowhowvaluablethestoneis,butIgiveitbackinthehopethatyoucangivemesomethingevenmoreprecious.Givemewhatyouhavewithinyouthatenabledyoutogivemethestone."Ibelievethatallofyouhavethatkindnessandlovewithinyouthatwillinspireothers.Wewishyou,theSeniorclassof2011,everythingofthebestforthefuture.IwouldliketoinvitealltheYear12studentstoattendMasswithusonTuesdaymorningintheFrLiamChapelat8am.

GREEN AND GOLD DAY FRIDAY, 21 OCTOBER Green and Gold Days are an opportunity for students not to wear their school uniform to school. It is an oppor-tunity for students to show their pride by wearing the school colours of green and gold, and is not a free dress day. Students may wear-

· Clothing that is predominately green and /or gold · Plain blue denim shorts or jeans · St Patrick’s jerseys/ Team t–shirts · Sandshoes · Any clothing with the St Patrick’s logo

Students must not wear- · Clothing that is not predominately green and /or gold · Thongs / pluggers / sandals · No black Socks or black T Shirts

Normal hair and grooming guidelines apply. Students who have workshop classes on that day must bring their black leather school shoes for these classes. We also ask all students to bring a gold coin donation to support young Miette Skiller from Brighton who has cancer. As this is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month her mother wants to create more awareness for paediatric cancers, in the hope more work and support can be done to find a cure. If you would like to help the Skiller Fami-ly you can do so by contacting the ‘support the Skiller Family’ group by email on [email protected] or via Miette’s blog or Facebook page. YEAR 11 LEADERSHIP RETREAT Congratulations to all Year 11 students who are heavily involved in our Leadership program. Over the past two weeks every Year 11 student has been involved in a four phase process to select our elected leaders for 2012. Next Monday and Tuesday all the Year 11 students will participate in a Leadership Retreat the at Gold Coast Sports Centre at Runaway Bay. Wednesday has been set aside as House planning days. The Year 11 Students will work together with House Deans to plan their direction for 2012. Each House will be transported to various venues in the local area. Students are required to bring their own lunch on these days. SHOWCASE Our Inter-House competition culminates this Friday evening with Showcase. It should be a great spectacle with over 1000 students on stage during the night. Please ensure your son knows when and where he is to meet his House Dean and what time his House is performing. We have asked the students to ensure they do not move around the school on the evening but are always with their parents, their House or performing on stage. HELP NEEDED The Year 12 Graduation Mass and Dinner will be held on Thursday, 18 November. We are asking present Year 11 parents and students to assist on the evening with the serving of food and drinks. Next year you will be the special guests and be waited upon. If you can assist during the evening please contact Mrs Sandra Fowlie in the Student Office.

Theatresports 2011 Second place in State Finals!!!

Congratulations to our senior Theatresport team “Rolling Scones’ who competed in the Youth Theatresports States Finals on Sunday 16 October at the Roundhouse Theatre, Kelvin Grove and was placed second in the State. The team consisted of Thymon Venter, Liam Polkinghorne, Nathaniel Trappett, Regan Samuels and Damian Tatum. These boys competed as a team since Year 9 and have progressed twice to the semi-finals in the past. They played impressively through all the rounds this season to make the Grand Final. The team was endorsed as the most improved team in the 2011 competition. 110 teams competed in the competition this year and this makes their achievement outstanding. Well done!!

The school year so far has gone so fast. I have to say that the com-petition for the House Shield has become so much more intense with the expansion to 9 Houses. Tomorrow night is Showcase night and House Choir is always so competitive All of the Houses have been working hard to perfect their performances, it will be a great night as always and may the best House win (GO KENNEDY!). This year for myself has been great so far - I was very fortunate and had the opportunity of a lifetime being selected to go to Cincinnati, USA for the student exchange program. I loved every minute of the ex-change it was great. I would like to sincerely thank Dr Carroll, Mr Gardiner, Miss Kopp, Mr Tucker and my Mum and Dad for giving me this opportunity. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the new school leaders Ricardo Thomas, College Captain and Ethan Fleming, Lachlan Bettington and Peter Sloss as the College Vice Captains, I'm sure you will do a fantastic job and will make our fantastic College proud and I would also like to congratulate all students shortlisted for College House Leaders and may the best House Leaders be selected. All Year 11 students will be on leadership camp next Monday and Tuesday and then have a ‘House Day’ on Wednesday where we all get together and get prepared for next year. I hope all Year 11 boys will go into the camp with an open mind to help us get prepared for next year because it is going to be a great year. Overall the year so far has been great and Kennedy House is going fantastically well - we are currently in third po-sition and we need all Kennedy House boys to turn up on Friday so we can give it a real crack and make the Callan Centre rock!!! Thanks again to everyone who have helped me throughout the year. Liam Anderson (Yr 11) "Fight the Good Fight"

This week, we as a College, witnessed some courageous performances which, to us all should epitomise what sport is all about. Last Friday evening and last Tuesday, we saw the majority of our track and field athletes ‘step up’ to heights of determination, pride in their College and overall sportsmanship that we can be extremely proud of. Many of our athletes gave their all and ‘left nothing on the track’ as they fought it out against some of the best athletic competition and performances that we have seen at an AIC Championship in many years. The overall quality of performances was some of the best that we will see within Queensland. Not only must we acknowledge our athletes but we must also make special mention of the fantastic sup-port shown by all of our supporters in Years 8 to 12 who cheered and chanted for their school mates all day on Tuesday. Their voices and encouragement did make a difference and is truly appreciated by all of our athletics squad. On a personal note, to watch St Patrick’s College come together so positively both on the field of play (track/field) and in the stands, is exactly what all our sporting events should reflect. We as a College should be extremely proud of ourselves this week as we definitely upheld our College’s motto of Certa Bonum Certamen – ‘Fight the Good Fight’…..and we did! Congratulations SPC Track and Field Team The St Patrick’s College Track and Field AIC Team finished a commendable third place at this week’s AIC Championships. With only 10.5 points behind second (SEC), our athletes displayed lots of courage and determination. This was the highest amount of points that St Patrick’s College has scored at an AIC Track & Field Championship. Matthew Lydement - Recently selected into the Queensland U19 Secondary Schools Cricket Team. Matthew will now compete against other states as a pace bowler and middle order batsman for Queensland.
