Whilst the program causes some disruption to the daily routine of the College, it is a very worthwhile experience for the students. My thanks go to the large number of staff involved with this week’s program. On Sunday the first of the Year 12 Kairos retreats begin. Again a significant number of staff are involved with this very powerful program. Half of the Year 12 cohort is involved in this retreat whilst the other half participate in a QCST preparation program. I wish all Year 12 students and the staff attending Kairos the very best. Term 1 is nearly half way through and whilst the start has been a busy one I believe that it has also been a very positive one. Each year level has had an information evening. The first of the Parent Education Evenings with Brett Lee was held on Tuesday night. Academic and spirit assemblies, the commencement of the cultural and sporting programs, the Induction Mass and two important Reflections are some of the events that have taken place during the term so far. Over the years the Shindig has proved to be an exceptional evening. It has been a night where the St Patrick’s College Community can come together, have some fun and relax with friends. This year the Shindig is on Saturday March 23 in the Callan Centre. Tickets are limited so I would suggest you book early. You can organise your own table or simply book for yourself and the organisers can place you at a table. Further information is available elsewhere in the Calling. Contact the College Office on 3631- 9000 to book your tickets. During this week assessment calendars were issued. The purpose of these calendars is to provide the students and parents the various assessment items (examinations, assignments etc) that each year level will complete during Semester 1. This is intended to assist students with their planning and preparation. Along with accessing CONNECT, the assessment calendars allow you to keep track on what your son is doing and what assignments he has in the future. I encourage parents to spend some time going over the assessment calendar with your son as a way of supporting him and monitoring his progress. Finally this week, I will shortly commence enrolment interviews for Year 7 2014 and Year 5 2015. If you have a son entering either of these year levels or you know people who do, please ensure that enrolment applications have been submitted to the College. All families should have been emailed or posted usernames and passwords to access Connect. Access to the elearning portal is still being developed for parents, however parents do have access to all other areas within Connect plus Parent Lounge.

Students and staff have access to Department, Subject and Class pages under the elearning portal as they are linked to their specific timetables. Parents will not have a link to a timetable, therefore will only be able to access Department and Subject pages in the elearning portal when these upgrades are finalised. I suggest parents work with their sons on his class pages that he has access to on the elearning portal, to obtain information specific to his individual classes such as homework.

CONNECT tip for the week. Contact Information for all St Patrick’s College staff can be found under the Staff & Administration Link on the Connect Home page and then Contact Information as seen below. I encourage you to maintain open communica-tion with staff at the College.

SCHOOL FEES Term 1 school fees were emailed or posted on 17 January. Mr Kevin Van Der Weide India Immersion

In trying to describe my time in India, I could explain our itinerary and nearly four weeks of amazing activities and sights. However, on reflection I think a more effective way of explaining my true experience of India might be by shar-ing this simple story.

MOONEY’S MESSAGE IN IMALIA

In December last year I had the privilege of returning to In-dia with the 2012 India Immersion ream. I travelled with my wife MaryAnn to bring her back to the places that had touched my heart in 2009. Mooney raises money to help with the work done by Sister Magdalene Peter who works with the “untouchable” chil-dren in the town of Rajganpur in the state of Orrisa. One of the most moving experiences for me in 2009 was to be brought into the small school yard of the “untouchables” school and having these children dressed beautifully, clean and bursting with pride, and enthusiasm as they danced before us, they placed wreaths around our necks honouring us. As that night drew on and on boys shook their hands and danced with them, the untouchable children’s eyes lit up in excitement that we accepted them as our equals and want-ed to share time with them. They were beautiful humble people who entertained us with enthusiasm. The unfortu-nate yoke they had to bear was born into an untouchable class that in India meant a life of poverty. Life aspirations were few as they are deemed only suitable to work as the toilet cleaners and street sweepers. Many are driven to alco-hol and suicide; many are from fatherless and motherless families.

Sister Magdalene Peter worked in the Catholic Girls Boarding School across the road. She not only taught them but was a lawyer who dealt with the legal aspects of the school being an advocate for the poor in the government realm. In her spare time she started visiting the untouchable Community across the road and set up a place of learning for them. In 2009 there were about 30 or so children that got their only education from that school, that consisted of a concrete building some 12sq metres in a suburban backyard. In 2012 I was keen to return anticipating a “hearty wel-come”. This time some 60 students with accompanying par-ents greeted us. The dancing was much more elaborate and varied. To entice these students to school (which the un-touchables normally would not go to) music and dance was a large part of the curriculum as this is a major part of their tribal life. The stories of success were many. The school had been op-erating from some 15 years. Many had been able to breaka-way from the Untouchable curse. Teachers, nurses, cabdriv-ers, were now some of the professions of these young peo-ple that had been given a chance in life. There is some ani-mosity in the outside community who would like Untoucha-bles to stay that way and continue cleaning the toilets and roads of the high classes. It was amazing to see the growth and change that had occurred here in 3 years. There are 8 part time teachers employed at the school now. The money Mooney has raised over the past 3 years will have covered their salary. Have we made a difference to these people? – YES. I feel a responsibility now to continue the support. The hard work is being done by people such as Sister Magdalene Peter. Our support can be just a part answer to her prayers.

Speak out for those who cannot speak… Speak out, judge fairly, defend the rights of the poor and needy.

Proverbs 31:8-9

Next Friday, a new and exciting student advocacy network is being born – ‘ERA (Edmund Rice Advocacy) FOR CHANGE’. Over the coming months, I will let you know more about this initiative and the potential it has to effect change in our world through our young people simply using their voices. As a starting point though, just to give you some insight into what ‘ERA FOR CHANGE’ is about, I wanted include the fol-lowing two welcomes which will appear in the program booklet next Friday… When I met Boishaki in December 2010, she was ten years old, and one of the “Rainbow children” at the amazing Loreto Sealdah School in Kolkata. I sat with her while she told me excitedly about her upcoming Christmas. She was to see her mum for the first time since the previous year, and couldn’t wait! She explained that the previous year had been very special, and part of the reason was that she had received two rupees (4 Australian cents) and a guava from her mum for Christmas. Boishaki’s mum lives on the streets of Kolkata. Boishaki hopes that her education at Loreto Sealdah will mean that she will not have to live on the streets, and that she may even be able to help her mum out of her cycle of poverty as well.

Stories like Boishaki’s are of course not uncommon. Not only are there countless children all over the world suffering due to poverty, oppression and injustice, but here in Australia, there are men, women and children living in indefinite deten-tion, having committed no crime. How many of these peo-ple’s names do you know? How many of their personal sto-ries have you heard? Why is that the case, and what can we do about it? I was, and I remain moved by Boishaki’s story – she reminds me every day that there is more that we can do to try to make a better world for all people. She has a voice, as does each person living in detention in Australia – it’s just that we can’t hear them clearly enough. It’s like they are barely whispering. That’s where “ERA FOR CHANGE” comes in. It is our job, in-spired by Jesus Christ, Edmund Rice and the Christian Brothers, to amplify their voices. On behalf of the students and staff who have dreamt and organized this exciting new network of young advocates, I welcome you to “ERA FOR CHANGE: More than just a whisper”, and I sincerely thank you for your presence.

AP Curriculum

On Monday of this week assessment calendars for all year levels were placed onto my page on “Connect” (please see screen shot below) I suggest printing then keeping the plan-ner in a place where it is clearly visible throughout the semes-ter. It would make good sense to highlight the due date of tasks relevant to your son. As well I would look to place re-minders in things such as student diaries, Outlook express, even mobile phones. It is a very short time until assignments start to become due for submission. Could I ask all parents and boys to refer to the as-signment policy in the student diary. It is very important to take note of some key points in this policy. Firstly, the lesson indicated in the assessment planner. In a number of subject areas, students are being invited to upload sections or drafts of assignments tasks onto Connect. This is an important compo-nent of our unit design. Nevertheless, it is important to note that at this time all final copies of assignments must be sub-mitted in hard copy at the beginning of the lesson in which they are due. It is not permissible for boys to email final copies of assignments to teachers. We do require a printed copy with task sheet attached. As well, it is not permissible for boys to be excused from the room to go and print the assignment, partic-ularly in fairness to students who have brought a printed copy for submission. If a students asks to leave the room in order to print their work, it will be considered to be late. Please note that the Assignment Policy states clearly that stu-dents who cannot submit their work in the opening minutes of the lesson in which the task is due, will not be permitted to hand the work in later that day or any day after the deadline. In these cases, teachers will compile a mark by making reference to draft work or research notes. Where no draft work is availa-ble, students will be asked to complete the assignment during

the lesson and submit whatever they complete. If students are away on the day an assignment is due, the Col-lege requests that an email is sent to either the class teacher or Head of Curriculum informing them of the student’s absence. This is a courtesy in addition to the normal phone call to the Student office. Generally we would require a medical certifi-cate regarding the above. One would assume that if the absence is only for that day, then the assessment task is likely to have already been completed. I would request that in this case the work is emailed to the teacher, or uploaded to the teacher page on Connect at the beginning of the day. The stu-dent would then present a hard copy with task sheet on the first day of his return. If the illness has been ongoing and the student has missed school leading up to the due date, I suggest that an email or phone call to the class teacher would be beneficial in assessing the best course of action. In the case of extensions, again, I would suggest contacting the class teacher or Head of Curriculum well before the due date to discuss any difficulties or concerns. Students are not permitted to apply for extensions on the due date. There are a number of other components to the policy. It is quite strict, but by doing so, I believe we maintain an environ-ment which is fair for all students. Please refer to the student diary pp 153-155.

I would like to thank all the parents who attended the Parent Education Evening on Tuesday. The information presented by Mr Brett Lee highlighted the importance of protecting our identity. He gave a number of very practical examples and identified the concerns of submitting information over social networking sites. Ultimately the protection of childrens reputa-tion is of extreme importance, with our ultimate goal of making them responsible “Cyber Citizens”. I have included a copy of the Parent handout in this edition. In this edition I have raised a number of concerns. Please take the time to discuss these areas with your son. WEEK 5: “HAIR WEEK” HAIR This week is Hairweek which is halfway through the Term. I ask that you check your son’s hair and if required, make the neces-sary arrangements to have their hair cut to meet the College guidelines before the start of next week. I remind all students that their hair needs to be combed in a style that is appro-priate for school. We have spoken to a number of boys and have sent letters to parents of those boys who require to have their haircut earlier. The “shaggy” or “undone look” is not part of the Hair and Grooming policy at St Patrick’s College. I ask that you check your sons diary Pages 26-27 for the full Hair and Grooming Guidelines. UNIFORM A reminder for all students that the uniform is to be worn cor-rectly at all times this includes Shirts tucked in, socks pulled up, top buttons done up and ties worn correctly. All students were informed at assembly this week that consequences will occur if they are not wearing their uniform correctly. This is from the moment they leave home until they return in the afternoon.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT St Patrick’s is a great school but it can be let down in its public image if the students are poorly behaved on public transport. The College will not tolerate poor behav-iour on public transport. Students misbehaving in this area will face a range of consequences as a result of their actions. INTER-HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVALS Week 4 was a big week with two swimming carnivals. The spirit and participation from the students were excellent. The Year 12 students certainly led from the front and were very vocal with their spirit. The support the House leaders gave to the younger students was extremely impressive. Congratulations to O’Rourke House for their overall win. The outstanding swim-mers will now represent St Patrick’s at the upcoming AIC and CIC carnivals. Particular thanks to the House Deans who worked tirelessly over both days to ensure the carnival ran smoothly and was full of positive spirit. Overall Results: 1st O’Rourke, 2nd Quane; 3rd Rice; 4th Treacy; 5th Ryan; 6th Coffey; 7th Mooney; 8th Kennedy and 9th Xavier. ST PATRICK’S SOCIAL Our first Social for the year is on this Saturday 23 February from 7.00pm to 10.00pm. It will be held at the Sandgate PCYC and is for Year 9 to 12 students. We require parental assistance to help with the cloak room, collecting the entry fee, selling soft drinks and general supervision. All school rules apply and a mini-mum and appropriate dress standard with closed in shoes and no singlets.

YEAR 8 INDIGENOUS CULTURAL WEEK The Year 8 students attended two Indigenous Cultural days this week. The immersion program explores Aus-tralia indigenous culture, art, music, dance, rituals and stories and supports the curriculum in the Year 8 Arts program at St Patrick’s College. The aim of this cultural immersion is to create an awareness of social and cultur-al Aboriginal values and an understanding of Aboriginal history and social context through the eyes of an Aboriginal person.

There are four workshops on each day exploring art, dance, storytelling and music and presenters Arthur Conlon (artist) and Kerry Neill (musican) are presenting the workshops. Eric Ellis from Ngutana-Lui Aborgininal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Studies Centre presented a dance and music workshop. Our own Indiginous boys, Elroy Bara, Jordan Edwards and Adam Purunatatamei, under the leadership of Mr Luke Royes, presented a workshop on Aboriginal culture and identity.

PADDIES GREENFINGERS GARDEN

The recent good rain has made the Greenfingers very happy this week. Although the weeds grow as fast (if not faster) than the vegetables, the excellent weeding skills of the team are keeping the weeds at bay. The good news is that the worm farm is up and running – 1500 worms chomping their way through discard-ed banana peels and apple cores.

We are in the beginning stages of taking cuttings from various herbs to kick start our herb garden. We have also sowed some basil and on-ion seeds. A big thanks you to Mr Russell Oakes who donated a 300 litre water tank and a compost bin to the garden. Any donations are very welcome and at the moment we are looking for seed trays and small plastic planting pots and any cuttings that will boost our garden. Please contact us on 3631 9089 if you can assist.

MICAH PROJECTS VISIT On Thursday morning the Year 9 RE classes doing the homelessness unit along with members of the Ministry In Action team and the ERA for change group attended a seminar run by Micah Projects. Micah Projects works with Homelessness in Brisbane and provides homes for the most at risk. In the seminar students learnt about the very complex issues that lead to prolonged homelessness in Australia and the many issues involved. The students were told about the 50 Lives 50 Homes project run by Micah which provides housing for the most at risk and helps them get their lives back on track. The Work-shop was truly inspiring giving a strong insight into this complex issue and what is being done to combat the problem in Australia.

MINISTRY IN ACTION We are currently working on a logo for the Ministry team and each week will feature the entries until we choose the winner at the end of term. Below are two entries for this week:

A large number of enthusiastic runners turned up to run the ‘Shore to Gate’ on Sunday morning. A long cool swim was well deserved. It’s great to welcome a number of CIC runners and their par-ents. Although the distances each week are aimed at the AIC cross country runners, a few short cuts, a short ride in the support vehicle see the young runners completing the ses-sion. Well done. We will again be meeting a 6.55am (Plaza area) for a 7am start next Sunday. Everyone is welcome! Hope to see you on Sunday Any enquiries [email protected]

Mr Doug Locke Swimming

The College Swimming Championships will be held on Friday afternoon (Sandgate Pool 3.30pm – approx. 5.30pm) and is the most important swim meet of the season. This is the final chance for students to record a time to gain selection in the school swim team. CIC boys are able to swim in 50m races for all strokes. AIC will be racing 50m, 100m and some 200m events. Some boys have already swum their 50m butterfly event at the recent Inter-House swim carnival and are not permitted to swim this event again. Students are to meet outside the tuckshop and walk with the senior boys as a group to the pool. Parents may pick up their sons and transport them to the pool if they wish. The pool canteen will be open. Parents are welcome to attend. COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIP ORDER OF EVENTS:

200 IM (AIC swimmers only) 50m Breaststroke (CIC / AIC) 100m Freestyle (AIC only) 50m Freestyle (CIC / AIC)

Mr Tim Walker Volleyball

Round 2 against St Edmund’s College was another hard fought battle with wins being recorded by 1st VI, 15A, 15C, 14A, 14B, 14C and 13A teams. In similar style to last week, the Firsts found themselves 0-2 down. Again, they showed fighting spirit, and this time were victorious 15-9 in the fifth set. Again, the Paddies’ supporters were superb, helping to lift the team after a ‘shaky’ start. Your support will certainly be needed when we are away to Iona College this week. The draw for this Saturday’s fixtures can be found below. Seeing as we are away, we do not need to supply a duty team. Please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled game time.
