A PROPER OCEAN GOING CRUISING YACHT.Calliope 339 number 1 started life by crossing the Atlantic, there and back twice; the second owner took her to the Red Sea and back and the third owner decided to circumnavigate. Quite a pedigree.Calliope’s have been built with the standard doghouse; a pilot house; long keel; twin symmetric ballasted bilge keels; cutter rig; ketch rig and even a junk rig.

Calliope 339 is designed as an aft cockpit, round bilge, proven true, blue water ocean cruising yacht capable of being handled by a small crew, yet comfortable for 6 people if required. The long keel or bilge keel with skeg formats gives directional stability coupled with an easy motion thus relieving the crew of strain whilst at sea. The flush deck allows full use of the capacious hull form and gives plenty of uncluttered space to work or lounge around, plus the possibility of carrying a rigid dinghy forward of the mast (a feature not often found on modern yachts). The cockpit is designed to be deep for both safety and comfort, yet easily stepped out of onto the side decks. its way below. Traditional general arrangement split into 3 sections; THE WORKlNG AREA situated under the doghouse, therefore with above-average headroom and light availability from windows. L-shaped galley to starboard; generous quarter berth with stowage beneath and aback opposite whose forward end is utilised as a seat for the chart table. Adequate storage for charts is available within the table plus shelves and lockers for instruments and books, etc.. THE SALOON: The flush deck nature of the vessel creates a great feeling of capaciousness enhanced by the use of deck hatches. A dinette arrangement to starboard converting into a generous

double bed over 1.2m (4ft) in width; plus shelves and lockers. Aback and above the settee is a full-

length pilot berth with large lockers beneath; this allows both the outboard squab of the dinette and the pilot berth to be used as sea-berths in the centre of the boat with the addition of suitable lee cloths. Forward is a large hanging locker. Opposite is the generous toilet and shower compartment. THE FORCABlN: Two large V-berths set relatively high to provide large sail bins beneath. The cabin is self-contained having its own hanging locker plus full-length shelves either side: access available into the forepeak/chain locker areas. Large forehatch provide light, escape and sail access. The deep sea nature of this yacht dictates generous stowage and storage space commensurate with the number of persons expected aboard. Above average ventilation is therefore built in providing comfort when she is either fully battened down or in sunnier climes.

Calliope 339 requires the displacement to be on the moderate to heavy side as extended passages require extensive provisions, fuel and water, and thus she is capable of carrying the mounts one would expect. A powerful rig will drive her displacement yet it has been designed to be easily managed by a small crew. The whole design is not extreme in any way and therefore provides a well-balanced yacht both while sailing and aesthetically. Recommended engines; around 40hp continuous rating driving through 2:1 reduction gearbox.

Hull construction based around a heavy fabricated box keel containing ballast and tankage; 4mm plate hull and deck stiffened longitudinally with perforated T bars at regular intervals plus transverse frames to stiffen the hull girder.

These boats are suited to professional construction Bare shells to complete vessels can be supplied from professional boatbuilders.
