(As the congregation joins in singing the hymns below, the dieners will serve the

T. DIX (581 H) (Tune for Hymn 538)

Praise to God, immortal praise,

for the love that crowns our days!

Bounteous source of every joy,

let Thy praise our tongues employ;

all to Thee, our God, we owe,

source whence all our blessings flow.

As Thy prospering hand hath blest,

may we give Thee of our best

and by deeds of kindly love

for Thy mercies grateful prove,

singing thus through all our days,

praise to God, immortal praise.

T. GERMANY (22 R) (Tune for Hymn 581)

Give to our God immortal praise;

mercy and truth are all His ways;

wonders of grace to God belong,

repeat His mercies in your song.

He built the earth, He spread the sky,

and fixed the starry lights on high;

wonders of grace to God belong,

repeat His mercies in your song.

He sent His Son with power to save

from guilt, from darkness, and the grave;

wonders of grace to God belong,

repeat His mercies in your song.

T. ST. GEORGE’S, WINDSOR (205 F)

(Hymn 450)

Come, you thankful people, come,

raise the song of harvest-home;

all is safely gathered in,

ere the winter storms begin;

God, our Maker, does provide

for our needs to be supplied:

come with all his people, come,

raise the song of harvest-home.

All the world is God’s own field,

fruit unto his praise to yield,

wheat and weeds together sown,

unto joy or sorrow grown;

first the blade, and then the ear,

then the full corn shall appear;

Lord of harvest, grant that we

wholesome grain and pure may be.

T. SCHUMANN (Hymn 657)

We give you but your own

in any gifts we bring;

all that we have is yours alone,

a trust from you, our King.

May we your bounties thus

as stewards true receive,

and gladly, Lord, as you bless us,

to you our first-fruits give.

To comfort and to bless,

to find a balm for woe,

to tend those lost in loneliness

is angel’s work below.

The captive to release,

the lost to God to bring,

to teach the way of life and peace –

it is a Christ-like thing.

And we believe your word,

though dim our faith may be.

Whate’er we do for you, O Lord,

we do it gratefully.

The Moravian Blessing

Come, Lord Jesus, our Guest to be,

and bless these gifts bestowed by Thee.

Bless our loved ones everywhere,

and keep them in Thy loving care. Amen.

(As the congregation partakes of the lovefeast, music is offered

by the string trio.)

Grave, Allegro from Trio No. 3 in C Major John Antes

Ms. Metheny, Mrs. Wilmot, and Ms. Johnston

After the partaking, the dieners will enter the sanctuary to collect cups while the

congregation sings the hymns below.)

T. ITALIAN HYMN (579 B)

The God of harvest praise;

in loud thanksgiving raise

hand, heart, and voice;

the valleys laugh and sing,

forests and mountain ring,

the plains their tribute bring,

the streams rejoice.

O bless his holy name,

and joyful thanks proclaim

through all the earth;

be grateful and receive

God’s blessing and believe;

his love does not deceive.

Now share your mirth!

The God of harvest praise;

hands, hearts, and voices raise

with sweet accord;

from field to store the grain

bearing your sheaves again,

and in your glad refrain

now bless the Lord.

T. UNSER HERRSCHER, UNSER KÖNIG (91 A) (Hymn 406, Moravian Book of Worship, 1995)

Look, O look, the sight is glorious,

see the man of sorrows now;

from the fight returned victorious,

ev’ry knee to him shall bow.

Crown him! Crown him!

Crown him! Crown him!

Crowns become the victor’s brow.

Crown the Savior! Angels crown him!

Rich the trophies Jesus brings;

on the seat of pow’r enthrone him,

while the vault of heaven rings.

Crown him! Crown him!

Crown him! Crown him!

Crown the Savior, King of kings.

Sinners in derision crowned him,

mocking thus the Savior’s claim;

saints and angels crowd around him,

own his title, praise his name.

Crown him! Crown him!

Crown him! Crown him!

Spread abroad the victor’s fame!

Hark! those bursts of acclamation!

Hark! those loud triumphant chords!

Jesus takes the highest station;

O, what joy the sight affords!

Crown him! Crown him!

Crown him! Crown him!

King of kings and Lord of Lords!

T. NUN DANKET (146 A)

Now thank we all our God

with heart and hands and voices,

who wondrous things hath done,

in whom His world rejoices;

who from our mother’s arms

hath blest us on our way

with countless gifts of love

and still is ours today.

O may this bounteous God

through all our life be near us

with ever joyful hearts

and blessed peace to cheer us;

and keep us in His grace,

and guide us when perplexed,

and free us from all ills

in this world and the next.

All praise and thanks to God

the Father now be given;

the Son, and Him Who reigns

with Them in highest heaven;

the one eternal God,

whom heaven and earth adore;

for thus it was, is now,

and shall be evermore.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Appreciation is expressed to all of our musicians for their contributions to

our lovefeast service today: The String Trio, including Ruth Metheny and

Monika Wilmot, violins, and Alexandra Johnston, cello; the Calvary Band;

the Chancel Choir; and our pianist, Mary Louise Kapp Peeples.

Grateful appreciation is expressed to our dieners for serving today’s

lovefeast, to our coffee makers for preparing the lovefeast, and to our

greeters and ushers for welcoming members and guests to our service. We

also thank Lynn Biggam for serving as our Lay Reader today.

THE MORAVIAN LOVEFEAST

The holding of lovefeasts, after the practice of the Apostolic Church, has

come to be one of the outstanding customs of the Moravian Church and has

proved to be a real means of grace. Members of other denominations are

attracted to Moravian lovefeasts in large numbers, and thus the spirit of

fellowship is greatly advanced.

Lovefeasts originated in the first gathering of Christians after Pentecost.

The early believers met and broke bread together, thereby signifying their

union and equality. These meals of the church family were associated with

the celebration of the Lord’s Supper, which followed them. They were

called “agape,” from the Greek word for love, that is for the highest type of

spiritual love. Gradually, the agape lost its devotional character, and toward

the end of the fourth century, the Church gave it up.

The lovefeast of Apostolic times was resuscitated in its original simplicity

by the Moravian Church in 1727. After the memorable celebration of the

Holy Communion on August 13, seven groups of the participants continued

to talk over the great spiritual blessing which they had experienced and were

reluctant to separate and return to their own homes for the noonday meal.

Count Zinzendorf, sensing the situation, sent them food from his manor

house, and each group partook together, continuing in prayer, religious

conversation, and the singing of hymns. This incident reminded Zinzendorf

of the primitive agape, and the idea was fostered until lovefeasts became a

custom in Moravian life. They were introduced wherever new settlements

were founded and so came to America.

Page 10: Calvary Moravian Churchcalvarymoravian.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Bulletin...Calvary Moravian Church REIGN OF CHRIST SUNDAY THANKSGIVING LOVEFEAST NOVEMBER 24, 2019 600 Holly Avenue

THE MORAVIAN LOVEFEAST (continued from page 9)

Wherever its fullest liturgical development exists, the lovefeast is a service

of solemn dignity, in which the finest Moravian Church hymns and stately

music may be heard, but without any surrender of its central idea.

Because of its attraction for visitors, persons sometimes come to a lovefeast

out of curiosity, perhaps amused at the idea of “eating in church.” It is

interesting to see such a person yield to the spirit of devotion which

pervades the service and change in a very few moments from visitor to

reverent member of the service. This never fails when the congregation is

itself full of the spirit of reverence and Christian love.

The lovefeast is primarily a song service, opened with prayer. Often there is

no address; the hymns in the ode, or order of service, furnish the subject

matter for devotional thoughts. If many visitors are present, the presiding

minister often says a few words, explaining the purpose of the service, just

before the congregation partakes of the bun and coffee, or whatever is

served. On special occasions an address may be added, giving opportunity

to remind the congregation of the history of the anniversary or the deeper

import of the day.

There is no rule as to the food to be offered, except that it be very simple

and easily distributed. The drink may be coffee, tea, or lemonade, fully

prepared in advance, so that it may be served very quietly and without

interruption of the singing. Usually mugs are used, which may be passed

from hand to hand along a pew from a tray brought along the aisle. A

slightly sweetened bun, which can be served in baskets along the pews, is a

convenient form of bread. Usually men handle the trays of mugs, and

women the baskets of buns. While the congregation partakes, the choir

sings an anthem. Later the mugs are quietly gathered and removed. The

food served is not consecrated, as in the communion. Children and

members of any denomination may partake.

There are many services during the year at which a lovefeast is appropriate,

such as the festivals of the church year, the anniversary days of the

Moravian Church, the anniversary day of a congregation, a missionary

occasion, any day in fact in which there is a desire to stress the headship of

the Lord and the oneness and fellowship of His followers.

Next Sunday, December 1, is the First Sunday in Advent and the first

Sunday in the new church year. During worship next Sunday, we will pray

the traditional Advent liturgy and sing the “Hosanna” anthem as we prepare

for the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Our Brunson Angel Tree angels have all flown away! Thank you for your

generosity in making sure that all our Brunson kids have a wonderful

Christmas. Thank you also to the Missions Committee for their continued

support and organization of this first endeavor with our new Brunson

Elementary partnership. All gifts are due back to Calvary no later than

Sunday, December 8. Additionally, in the afternoon of December 15, we

will have a gift pick-up party in Fellowship Hall! Parents and guardians of

these students are invited to come to Calvary and pick up their gifts. We

need as many hands as are able to help direct people, make sure gifts are

organized, help with small snacks, etc. If you are willing or interested in

being a part of this afternoon in any way, please see Beth Smith, Donna

Cheek, or Amanda Schumpert, and we'll get you set up.

This Christmas season, the Calvary “Sisters Fellowship” will again be

selling “Lovefeast in a Box” for yourself or to give to family and friends.

The Lovefeast in a Box consists of a dressed lovefeast candle, Moravian

sugar cookies, and the makings for traditional lovefeast coffee (just add

water). In addition, you will receive a bulletin for the Christmas Eve

Lovefeast and instructions on how to join our Christmas Eve Lovefeast

virtually through online video streaming. Limited paper order forms will be

available outside the church office. To order, you may scan the QR code

The Moravian Church Reign of Christ Sunday November 24, 2019

Jesus the Chief Elder and Christ the King

I suspect that I am not the only Moravian pastor who has trouble knowing

where to go in preaching on Christ the King Sunday.

After all, we celebrated the Festival of Christ the Chief Elder only two

weeks ago, and many of the same themes are emphasized on both occasions.

Jesus is the chief elder of our community of faith. Christ is the head of the

church. Jesus Christ is the bishop of our souls. Christ is the Lord of all.

What’s the difference, and how do we draw a line of distinction? We don’t.

Although Jesus Christ is indivisible, at some moments we emphasize his

humanity and at others times his divinity. Perhaps that’s a good way to

understand these two end-of-the-church-year festivals. Jesus as Chief Elder

governs and guides our lives on earth, including our relationships within the

church. Christ the King is Cosmic Lord, who sanctifies us as we are drawn

into the Reign of Christ (also known as the Kingdom of God).

The dying thief on the cross prayed, “Jesus, remember me when you come

into your kingdom.” The one who is our chief elder and our sovereign

supports and sustains us at all times and in every place, in all conditions and

circumstances of life. In him we find health and wholeness, liberation and

new life, grace and peace.

Blessings abound where’er he reigns,

the prisoners leap to lose their chains,

the weary find eternal rest,

and all who suffer want are blessed.

PRAYER OF MEDITATION

Reign of Christ Sunday

Holy God, our refuge and strength, you have redeemed your scattered

children, gathering them from all the corners of the earth through your

firstborn, the Christ, in whom all things are held together. Make of us a just

and righteous people, worthy by grace to inherit with him the kingdom of

light and peace where he reigns with you and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
