Description:
The World Heritage site of Angkor Wat might be Cambodia’s main lure but the rest of the country is just as fascinating, if not more. Laid back cities, a rich culture, a vibrant river life, relaxing beaches, forgotten jungle temples and a surprisingly variety of wildlife combine with an intriguing and complex political past, a colorful royalty and surprisingly gentle people.

Page 2: Cambodia - Evoking A Sense of Wonder

For more than 700 years from the 9th to

15th century, the Khmer Empire was a

dominant power in South East Asia and

had left behind an architectural legacy

unmatched anywhere else on earth –

Angkor Wat and the whole archaeological

park, with over 200 gorgeous temples

on a 200 sq km plain. Some compare it

with placing all the churches in Europe

into London or Paris! If there is only one

archaeological site that you are going to

visit, it has to be this.

Even if you are not a history buff,

Angkor Wat is not to be missed.

Exploring Angkor need not be just

temple hopping. You can ride an

elephant or cycle from one temple to

another or go on a micro-light to get a

bird’s-eye view of the site. In between

the temples, ride an All Terrain Vehicle

to explore the countryside or experience

the unique ways of life on the water of

the Tonle Sap Lake.

Besides Angkor, the Cambodian capital,

Phnom Penh, is a good introduction

to the history of the current royal family

as well as the dark chapter in its recent

history – the atrocities of the Khmer

Rouge. And what best way to end a

trip than to relax on a beach that has

not been trampled by mass tourism –

Sihanoukville.

Beyond CambodiaThe three Indochina countries, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia share much of their historical legacies; from their distinctive Indian and Chinese influence to their French colonial past. And the Mekong River is certainly a lifeline shared by all three closely.

A trip combining two or more of these countries allows you to concentrate specifically on your interests. You can go on a heritage trail covering the UNESCO sites of Angkor, Luang Prabang, Hue, Hoi An and My Son or follow the Mekong from the Delta up Tonle Sap River to Angkor Wat.
