The Cambridge Days Sessions Bob ObeeTeaching Towards the Revised Cambridge English: First and Cambridge English: Advanced examinations.

This talk will give a brief overview of the changes to the FCE and CAE examinations to be introduced in January 2015. The presentation will highlight that the new task types relate principally to the Writing and Speaking papers and explore the principle teaching implications in preparing candidates effectively for these changes. The different roles an exam-focused teacher might be seen to have in working to improve student performance in relation to such task types will also be touched on.

Webs of Words: Issues in vocabulary learning and teaching at A2 and B1.

This presentation will highlight some of the key issues identified in recent research and projects such as Cambridge English Profile relating to best practice in vocabulary teaching and learning. We will explore the notion of what it means to ‘know a word’ and consider practical implications of this notion for teachers in preparing a wholesome and balanced lexical diet for their charges and for learners in developing well-grounded lexical manners and a keen sense of lexical repartee to bring to table as they prepare for the different papers in KET and PET.

Martin HewingsApplications of corpus analysis in EAP: research, learning, and teaching

The talk outlines recent research employing corpus analysis for EAP, considers the effectiveness of learner investigations of corpora in ‘data-driven learning’, and explores the kinds of discoveries teachers can make from corpora. The focus will be on applying corpus analysis in classroom activities and materials, and participants will have the opportunity to compare their intuitions about language with corpus evidence.

Anca-Mariana Pegulescu Assessment and its roles in the Romanian Language Teaching Preuniversity Educational System.

Assessment in language teaching means, on one hand, identifying learners’ needs, monitor their progress and, on the other hand, determine teachers and planners evaluate the effectiveness of their programmes.

Do teachers design or choose tests that are practical, reliable and valid? Such a very important question should be answered by teachers themselves, inspectors, decision making factors in the domain of evaluation and exams, exams administrators. Romanian modern languages preuniversity teaching system has experienced traditional and alternative forms of assessment. What really matters is to measure how well our students have learnt what they have been taught, help them know how they are progressing. Assessment in language teaching (referring to English) is a whole process. It means making decisions and taking actions in language education.

Sam StevensonContinous Professional Development for English teachers

You are on a journey as a teacher of English. But where do you want to go? What do you need to do to get there? This session will outline the benefits of participating in continuing professional development, ways in which and places from where you can get support and guidance. There will be ideas on how you can design your own programme and follow an independent pathway, as well as the possibilities for collaborating with colleagues on tasks and projects.
