It is not often that a UniversityMusical Society offers such a richand exciting array of repertoire asdoes the 2018-19 CUMS Season.
Our two orchestras, CambridgeUniversity Orchestra andCambridge University Sinfonia,take on a thrilling year – highlightsinclude Cambridge UniversityOrchestra playing Debussy’s LaMer, with returning conductor andCUMS Artistic Advisor SianEdwards, an extremely excitingRussian dance music programmeincluding Rachmaninov’sSymphonic Dances andStravinsky’s iconic The Rite ofSpring with Duncan Ward; andCambridge University Sinfoniataking on Shostakovich’s 1st andBrahms’s 2nd symphonies, and aprogramme of Prokofiev andShostakovich with conductor HollyMathieson. The two orchestrascombine in our annual King’sChapel concert, welcomingGraham Ross to conduct a timelyperformance of Britten’s intimateand deeply moving War Requiem.The Wind Orchestra are gearingup for another busy year and areparticularly looking forward to
collaborating with the fantasticCambridge University JazzOrchestra.
We are delighted to welcomeesteemed conductor RichardWilberforce, Chorus Master of theLeeds Philharmonic Chorus andformer Director of the Hallé YouthChoir as the new musical directorof Cambridge UniversitySymphony Chorus, who haveahead of them a wonderful season,culminating in a concertperformance of extracts fromBoris Godunov with Sir JohnTomlinson, conducted by RyanWigglesworth.
Additionally, the New MusicEnsemble look forward toperforming a new work by RobinHolloway in Kettle's Yard andhistorically informed performanceexpert and scholar John Butt joinsMargaret Faultless and CollegiumMusicum to perform Handel’s DixitDominus, with guest players fromthe Orchestra of the Age ofEnlightenment. This is just asnapshot of the year’s music: weare delighted to be able toshowcase such a varied, ambitious
and exciting programme for our2018-19 Season. We are deeplygrateful to our many supporters,without whose steadfastgenerosity such a fantastic musicalopportunity for so many peoplewould not be possible. Soprano, Cambridge University Symphony Chorus
Since joining the University two years ago, singing with the Chorus has beenone of the most enriching parts of my university experience. I was concernedabout how I might fit my musical passion around studying for a MedicalDegree, but the Symphony Chorus has provided unmatched opportunities tosing in amazing venues around Cambridge and beyond! I have also enjoyedsinging in such a large ensemble - a factor that makes the Symphony Chorusunique from most other University choirs. Highlights have been singingCopland’s In the Beginning in Trinity College Chapel, and especially singingBrahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem in King’s College Chapel, conducted by JeremyJackman. As Student President of Symphony Chorus, I have had the chance toinfluence how the Chorus is run, as well as getting a tangible sense of the workthat goes into every concert. In the forthcoming season I am particularlylooking forward to singing a selection of works by Dvorák in Lent Term.

Playing in the Cambridge University Orchestra in my first year has beena massive part of my university life and I am really looking forward toanother year! It has been a great way of meeting other music students,as well as people studying almost every subject from colleges across theUniversity. A personal highlight from last year was performing SchrekerKammersymphonie and Brahms Symphony No.1 under Sir Mark Elder.Playing under professional conductors is one of the unique aspects ofthe ensemble. Each conductor brings different rehearsal techniques andconducting styles, meaning that you learn something new from everyconcert and conductor. Rehearsals are very focused and productive,with every player committed to producing a high quality and excitingperformance for each concert. The social side of Cambridge UniversityOrchestra is equally inclusive and fun, ranging from biscuit breaks toformals, post-rehearsal pub trips and after concert parties!

Millie NewisViolin, Cambridge University Sinfonia
I am very grateful for the opportunities that playing in the CambridgeUniversity Sinfonia has offered me over the 2017-8 season. Therepertoire has been varied, challenging and exciting: we have playedfamous symphonies as well as new compositions, and have joined forceswith renowned soloists and choirs to produce some excellent concerts.A particular highlight was the May Week Concert, in which we playedBrahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem in King’s College Chapel. Over the pastyear, I have learnt a great deal from my fellow players, the accomplishedconductors and skilled coaches, all of whom are generous with their timeand expertise. This is partly what makes the Sinfonia feel professional,but also fun and welcoming. I really enjoyed the orchestra tour toTuscany this summer and I am really looking forward to the forthcomingseason, which will feature Prokofiev’s Cinderella suites andShostakovich’s first violin concerto.
Max McLeish Trombone, Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra
I played trombone in CUJO during my first year at Cambridge. I enjoyed thebroad range of music we played, from swing era arrangements tocontemporary compositions including charts by members of the band.Highlights have been the joint concert with saxophonist Trish Clowes aspart of the Cambridge Jazz Festival, and working with BBC Big Banddirector Barry Forgie. Bringing their own compositions, arrangements andexperience, Trish and Barry each proved to have a large effect on the styleof the band, and provided entertaining projects. This year I am excited to bemusical director of the band along with Jamie Edgerton. The joint projectsare again must-see gigs, with trumpet player/composer Yazz Ahmedcollaborating with the band in November, and the Cambridge UniversityWind Orchestra will be joining us in May for a joint concert includingGershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. We also have regular gigs at Pizza ExpressJazz Club in Soho and around Cambridge, and a tour in the summer.

CUWO TOUR TO CANADABetween 2 and 11 July 2018, Cambridge University WindOrchestra embarked on our most ambitious tour yet toCanada in celebration of our 30th Anniversary. Althoughbased in Montreal, we played five concerts across the citiesof Montreal, Ottawa and Quebec, including a joint concert aspart of the ‘Music and Beyond’ festival with Ottawa WindEnsemble, a performance at Calypso Waterpark, and anoutdoor concert in Mont Royal Park with magnificent viewsacross the city. These are just three unforgettable momentsfrom a tour packed full of highlights, which culminated in a24 hour stay in New York City before heading home. Hugethanks must go to Marcel Welsh, Joe Curran and especiallyRobin Otter for organising such an incredible tour withoutthe help of a tour company.

ORCHESTAL TOUR TO TUSCANYThis July, the CUMS orchestras united for a five-day tour ofTuscany. We played three concerts to rave reviews – afterour first concert in Montecatini Terme, several audiencemembers drove to the nearby town of Pescia the nextevening to hear us perform again! And in Pescia we werealso welcomed with open arms by a standing-room-onlyaudience and the mayor, as well as a late-night pizza party.The tour culminated in a performance at the prestigious43rd Cantiere internazionale d’arte in Montepulciano. Hugethanks to our conductor, Naomi Woo, for such a fabulousmusical experience! Alongside our concerts, we were able toexperience the breath-taking art and architecture of Luccaand Florence, to take a dip in the Mediterranean, and ofcourse to enjoy plenty of wine, pasta, and gelato.

Our HistoryCambridge University Musical Society (CUMS) is one ofthe oldest and most distinguished university musicsocieties in the world. It offers a world-class musicaleducation for members of the University and localresidents, nurturing the great musicians of the future andproviding performing opportunities for over 500Cambridge musicians every year.
The Society has played a pivotal role in British musical lifefor 175 years. It has educated Sir Andrew Davis, Sir MarkElder, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Edward Gardner,Christopher Hogwood and Robin Ticciati, has premièredworks by Brahms, Holloway, Lutoslawski, Rutter, Saxtonand Vaughan Williams, and has given generations ofCambridge musicians the experience of performingalongside visiting conductors and soloists includingBritten, Dvorák, Kodaly, Menuhin and Tchaikovsky. Sincethe 1870s, CUMS has enjoyed the leadership of several ofBritain’s best musicians, including Sir Charles VilliersStanford, Sir David Willcocks, Sir Philip Ledger, and, from1983 to 2009, Stephen Cleobury.
In 2009, Stephen Cleobury assumed a new role as PrincipalConductor of the CUMS Symphony Chorus, Sir RogerNorrington was appointed as Principal Guest Conductorand a series was launched to expose CUMS members to asuccession of world-class visiting conductors. In 2010,CUMS entered another new phase when it merged with theCambridge University Chamber Orchestra and CambridgeUniversity Music Club. In October 2010, the Societylaunched the Cambridge University Lunchtime Concerts –a new series of weekly chamber recitals at West RoadConcert Hall showcasing our best musical talent. In 2011 it
welcomed the Cambridge University Chamber Choir, whichis directed by Martin Ennis, David Lowe and NicholasMulroy. In 2014, the Cambridge University Jazz Orchestraand the Cambridge University New Music ensemble joinedCUMS as associate ensembles. Most recently, in 2017, theCUMS orchestras undertook a restructure, forming twoensembles (Cambridge University Orchestra andCambridge University Sinfonia) as opposed to three, withthe aim of creating a greater number of opportunities forstudents to play under some of the best professionalconductors.
CUMS continues to provide opportunities for our fineststudent soloists and conductors by awarding conductingscholarships and concerto prizes, and it encourages newmusic by running a composition competition andpremièring at least one new work each year. Recenthighlights have included a recording of The Epic ofEverest’s original score for the British Film Institute, Verdi’sOtello (Act I) conducted by Richard Farnes, J.S. Bach’sMass in B minor conducted by Sir Roger Norrington andBrahms’ Symphony No.1 conducted by Sir Mark Elder.

Since it was founded in 1843, CUMS has provided uniqueopportunities for successive generations of Cambridgemusicians. It has immeasurably enriched the cultural lifeof the University and city and, having launched many ofthe biggest careers in classical music, it has played apivotal role in the musical world beyond. CUMS receivesno core funding from the University, and income fromticket sales does not meet the full cost of delivering aworld-class musical education. The CUMS Supporters’Circle has been established to address this pressingfinancial need. All those who value Cambridge’s vibrantmusical heritage, and want to maintain it for the 21stcentury, are invited to join the Circle.
